Alright. Now I'll need pointers on displaying many images relating to a single portfolio entry (for creating slideshows and whatnot). But this already was very helpful. Many thanks MrBrightside! I'll return if I run into problems...

Hello. I'm not a PHP master, and that's why I came to ask this. I'd like my portfolio to be driven with PHP and flat files (e.g. .txt, .jpeg, etc.). A PHP script would run through a folder, checking for images, and then maybe text files with the same name for a description. Another problem might be images which relate to each other (different pages of the same web design for example). Reading with a suffix in file name? A loop would be needed (I think), which goes until all files have been read and displayed on the page. For different categories I was thinking of declaring a constant before <html> which then is checked and which determines the folder which's images the script then loads. Am I even close to being correct? Can this be done? I can most probably write the code myself, but the general flow of stuff is still a bit fuzzy. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the comment. Anything in particular on the blog design which just looks bad when compared with rest of the view? Or is everything somewhat okay to your eyes?

Hello. As some of you suggested, I added some graphics to my blog design. Before the design update it was essentially the same as now, except the only image visible was the logo. Now with added graphics like backgrounds and borders, I hope it stands out more. You can see my site at http://www.rdegree.net/ Any comments welcome. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment. Sidebar disappearing. Yes, I'm using 'overflow: auto;' on the main container to clear a float. The sidebar doesn't disppear, its just hiding behind a scrollbar near the footer. And the size it begins to become quirky is quite small. I'll get a fix for this one I've got other things out of the way. Thanks for pointing out though. I'll try to get some graphics in.

Many thanks for the replies everyone. I'll see what I can do about the navigation, must something about the positioning I'm trying to use. I'll try something more. I'm just glad that after a year of uptime I got something designed for it. Thanks again everyone.

Hello fellow WDF'ers! I've finally somewhat finalized my new blog design, and now I'd like to get some feedback on it. http://www.rdegree.net/ I just uploaded it, so there might be bugs around, but mainly it should work. And I haven't had time to add more content yet, but the first post is all readable. One thing I noticed was that list within posts and pages are missing bullet-points in IE7. Need to fix that soon. I might add a portfolio to the site later on. Thanks in advance everyone. Edit: fixed the bullet points in lists.

Add some padding, make the text in it left-justified and perhaps make it fade to black on the bottom? Also, make it less wide, so the parts under the header are as wide as the header is. Otherwise looks nice and simple, in my opinion.

If you're going for a more unique design (although I've heard lots of people have began pondering on horizontal design lately), do it! Although some readers/viewers might be surprised and scared of the new functionality. But if you want to be sure, go for vertical. By the way, can you split text into vertical columns using PHP? Or do you need JavaScript or something else? I'd like to try my hand on using a horizontal design with automated columns of text (which should be easier when CSS3 works, it has columning options) which are determined by the amount of lines in a paragraph (one line too many: split it and move to the next column).

I'm a bit affraid of them. It's stupid because I know they can't harm me in any way, other than keeping me awake during the night. I haven't got any "style" to get rid of them, but if they get too close, I squash them with something else than my bare hands...

To relate on the same topic, has anyone come across any good pagination mods? The vanilla "prev page/next page" links are quite dull (on the archive pages, search result pages, the homepage, etc.), when I'd like to have the page numbers as links. I've seen few but they're a hell to install and style... Anyone got some good ones for this purpose?

Akismet, SpamKarma and BadBehavior are good plugins to combat spam and other annoyances. At least for me they are. Of course CAPTCHA and other means are good too. But I prefer not to use those, to have less annoyances for the real commenters.

Nice and simple. Of course it's just like any other portfolio, but I like the way you made the thumbnails pop with the bold white borders agains't the dark background, without drowning the rest of the site. Although personally I'd try a serif instread of that curvy sans-serif on the headings (or perhaps change the copy text to sans-serif too). Just an opinion. Keep designing!

I liked the visuals of the old version more (it was light text on darkish brown/gray if I remember correctly). Anyways, good one. I've referred to it many times. There was another site like this one too, but lost the bookmark when I had to format my computer.

Nice one. I hope this expands in a good way, organized and so on. Also, <em> is for emphasized text. For italics you can use the good old <i> tag.

Make lists. “What is needed” and “what isn't needed”, “what's cool”, “what are the strict ‘no’s” and so on. They help planning on the project and leaving out unwanted things. After this I usually go and see how others did it. And from that info I can think if to use the same method or do something new. Then to planning the design itself. Layout, bells and whistles, typography, colors, etc. If something doesn't work, just scrap it and rethink if the feature is even needed. If something looks nice, but isn't needed, archive it. Nothing better than older projects when it comes to redesigns and such.

I like to call that Web 2.0 (overdone maybe). I think rounded corners are good, if it fits the design and doesn't look overdone.

I'd say switch that body background (the green gradient) to something else. At least to me it looks a bit irritating when trying to focus on the actual content. And make the links green too. Also, loving the logo, yours' or did someone else do it?

I (and many others) know the feeling. I've now made three fully completed designs for my blog (not launched yet), and ditched them all, I even coded one halfway through. Now I'm working on a simpler one, which can be changed more easily if needed. Anyways, put the design away for a day or two and view it again. Might help you spot the possible rights and wrongs. Also, external critique helps quite much. Good luck!

Simple (but not "bare") and easy to use. Just for my taste. Nice one from the designer.
