rubots reacted to RyanSMcFadyen in Website reviews neededHonestly? It's all wrong.
Sorry if that sounds harsh but I feel it's true.
What you have built is the opposite of what a person expects from a financial website. Those expectations are very important. They might be boring, it might feel cliché building a site that looks like every other accountants site but there is a very good reason they all look the same. It's what people expect.
You want to express reliability, stability, dependability, honesty, knowledge, calm, reason.
Unfortunately that site doesn't do any of that.
Black isn't a color people trust, not in that quantity.
Cursive fonts aren't the mark of reason.
Carbon Fiber has pretty much nothing to do with finance
4 completely different telephone icons is completely inconsistent.
Your spacing is inconsistent and you waste a lot of good real estate with that giant header that contains nothing.
You want White/Creams/Browns/Blues/Greens/Purples. Solid calm soothing colours. Black is a very harsh colour that, when used in blocks, dominates the things around it. It swallows up other elements. It's very, very difficult to make a black website that looks good.
You want serif fonts with simple bolded headers. No drastic size differences, no large chunks of text. Carefully selected words in reserved type.
No textures. At least nothing that obvious. Subtlety is absolute key to great design.
Simplistic, Minimalist and consistent iconography. You have 4 completely different telephone icons on those pages. That really doesn't make me want to give you a call, it makes me think you want to get your money's worth from an icon site subscription.
You want to square everything off and have consistent spacing between everything. It gives a sense of order, of reliability. People want their money handled by someone who is rigid and conformed.
P.S. Ditch those social icons entirely. Nobody is tweeting about the great new debt management consultant they just found.

rubots got a reaction from MikeChipshop in Best Practice: What tags should I wrap things like dates in?HTML5 time tag, http://html5doctor.com/the-time-element/
If however you are not sporting HTML5 then i would personally wrap it in a div called meta but it's a matter of preference.

From the replies you have given it seems you have your heart set on ASP so stick with it, and Dave is totally right.

rubots got a reaction from futureproof in Which language should I learn?Jock you make valid points, however, its possible to write rails applications without knowledge of ruby. Although, to do more complex things you will need to become familiar with ruby syntax.
At the end of the day OP its down to you to decide what path you wish to follow.
-
rubots got a reaction from futureproof in Which language should I learn?Like Gary said it's all a matter of preference and what you want to build. I am a rails man, however, i have been through many languages and frameworks in my time (PHP, ASP, ColdFusion to name a few). It is true that you can write applications in rails extremely fast compared to other frameworks and languages but the awesomeness doesn't just stop there.
Ruby is an easy language to learn, however, if you have come from a syntactically strict language like Java then it will confuse you as it doesn't force you to have semi-colons and such at the end of lines (although you can if you want). Rails supports something called testing which allows you to write in near English tests for your application which you can run with one command from the terminal, it will iterate through your application and point out errors and other mishaps. Rails also allows you to embed production ready code into your application with extreme ease, just include it in your application then run a few commands and you can have a full authentication system running in minutes, other languages this would take days (unless you used existing code but even then you would need to configure it to your liking).
Rails isn't database dependent, it has 3 built in modes (development, testing, production - all self explanatory) which allows you to develop using SQLite, test with MySQL and run on a server with PostgreSQL. Means you don't have to change tonnes of code if someone changes your the database software.
Like Gary said rails hosting is more expensive than that say of PHP but the money you saved developing the application (time == money) then the higher hosting cost is just redundant.
IMO rails is the future, their are more rails jobs than their are rails developers so the market is good for finding work.
In the end the decision is up to you.

rubots reacted to porkchops in My websiteSplash screens are a terrible idea. I'm willing to bet it will drastically hinder conversion, too. Never have auto-playing audio, either. If people want to listen to your audio, give them a button to turn it on.
My first impression is that the site is very amateurish. The elements with heavy gradients strike me as a late 90s visual style. Design is about subtle effects.
Marquees are annoying and serve no purpose, especially when the whole line fits on the screen.
Your typography needs some love. No one wants to read that much text when they come to a homepage. I also have no idea why you are using the image of the bug and flower. Doesn't seem relevant.
Markup-wise, you use IDs everywhere. You really need to review how CSS works. You aren't supposed to assign everything an ID, you want to use the "Cascading" part of css to write general rules. You also have a ton of extra spans and divs thrown in there that could be removed.
Your navigation menu is very hard to read and the method of coding (sprites) is really unnecessary here.
It's unacceptable to have a contact form with a second page for error messages. Especially one that is unstyled. You never want to tell the user something like, "Please go back and fix these errors." You need to remove any work the user has to do that is unnecessary. Form errors should be handled on the same page (either with AJAX or a one-page contact form). Highlight the fields that are throwing the error, leave the last input in them and explain why each field came back with an error. You have a UX black hole right now.
Those are the most glaring problems I see. All in all, I think the site illustrates a lack of planning. Brush up on HTML/CSS best practices, view some modern designs and see how/why they work. Maybe brush up on typographic theory too. THEN, after you have spent some time learning, try sketching out ideas on paper. Plan everything out and then you can move into your production/execution phase.

90% of the users on this forum are experts, we KNOW if you're using an IP from an Indian outsourcing company so don't even try!
