Help choosing the right e-commerce for ...
I could see how you would do this in Magento (the only thing we use so other carts may work) It will require a bit of customisation to get it working as you wish. But all doable

Magento Hosting Benchmark and Comparison site
I mentioned this in another topic and thought it might be of interest in general. This site here http://magebenchmark.sonassi.com/hosts/?orderby=rps&sort=DESC provides an insight into the hosting performance of Magento specialist hosting companies. Any host can sign up and submit their Magento demo site for the benchmark. You can drill down into minute detail on the different tests that are performed each night on the hosts package. cheers

Anyone customising Magento?
Magento is not so much processor hungry as the hosting just needs to be setup correctly. Unless you are getting insane levels of traffic Magneto does not have to have a dedicated server. As the above posted noted you just need a host who understands Magneto and has optimised their servers for this application. We have two shared magneto hostign offerings at £14.50pm and £24.99pm. One offers sub 0.7 second page load times and the other offers sub 0.2 second page load times with a much faster backend experience (where the real processor stuff happens). there is even a benchmarking site which gives you insight into how Magento hosts compare to each other to find the right price / performance option you need. http://magebenchmark.sonassi.com/hosts/?orderby=rps&sort=DESC As far as we can tell Magento is the only real player on the scene and I would urge everyone with an interest in e-commerce to start figuring out how it all works. I will PM you the name of a company offering magento training. hope this helps

why do people charge so much for this?
+ configure endless shipping permutations + research dozens of extensions / modules to do obscure this that or the other + battle half working payment gateways + create custom import scripts cos inevitably they have some unique need + custom email templates + oh and attributes are evil + etc These all take a lot of time and if the client is new to e-commerce there is often a lot of explanation / tutoring / hand holding involved. Having said that, to setup a Magento store from scratch with a supplied theme, we charge on average £350 for that work. That jumps to £1200 + for custom theme.. that takes a lot of time both for the design work and more importantly figuring out what the client wants.

Advice needed
Every time I look at these hosted solutions I am shocked at the price! cheap as chips... if you only want 5 products... then some insane multiplier kicks in and it costs you 100 quid a month for 1000 products!!! ouch! Find a host who will hold your hand and go for an open source cart on your own hosting environment.. this way you control everything Andy

How do I track inventory for each size in my Magento shoe store? PLEASE HELP ME :)
Hi Sean, this is the difference between custom options and configurable products... the latter lets you look after inventory the 1st does not. Details here http://www.magentocommerce.com/media/screencasts/configurable-products/view good luck Andy Dx3webs.com

magento.. massive feature list, robust, plenty of free themes, loads of easy to install extensions.

Multiple booking calendars
Sounds messy.. I would start with an e-commerce package and then integrate the calendar system.. as Magento is our thing we would install this along side your website and use a booking / reservation extension to handle purchases something like http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/aheadWorks/extension/1420/booking-and-reservations cheers Andy

How would you do this?
+ 1 for magento it is really easy to get started and adding products is a breeze. Hosting for a sub-half-second load time should be in the region of £15 / month. check out our demo store for an idea on response times

Looking for a smart ecommerce solution/shopping cart software
CSN-UK is spot on. The community edition of Magento is ideal for what you want. Very low entry costs but will grow as you do. It is easy to customise a theme to focus on images as the product if you wish.
