I have a more general question and as I'm new to this forum (as well as - more or less - to webdesign) I was not sure where to put this question.

I found webdesigners who build websites/homepages for companies or startups on their own (in contrast to working for a design agency, "only" making the design, and letting developers transfer it into code...).

And I ask myself, how these designers work.

Often, I read, that they are specialized in wordpress.

To see, how this works I bought a webhosting package (I already had a domain) and chose the option to install wordpress.

But after choosing wordpress there is the next question: "Managed WordPress" or "Wordpress".

"Managed" means: You don't have to care about updates, security or optimization of technology.

What would most webdesigners choose here?

Wordpress doesn't need a lot of management.

Once installed all you need to do is keep it updated. And that's simply a matter of clicking the 'update' button. Or select 'auto update' and it all gets done for you (for free).

We designer is a very loose term when it comes to wordpress. A good designer will deliver a ready to use theme or optimise your chosen theme. A naff designer just creates a pretty picture. Most people don't pay a designer to do anything. They install a theme and just crack on.

Learning curve can be a bit steep but most people get the hang of it in a couple of hours.

When you say it's that easy, are you maybe talking about wordpress.com?

There are two flavours of wordpress:

wordpress.com - this is where they host your site for you and look after everything. The basic package is free but if you want extra features you have to pay.

wordpress.org - this is where you look after your own site. Most hosts will have a one-click install package that sets everything up for you. Once your site is up and running you look after everything yourself. You don't need any technical skills. All you need to do is keep it updated - and you do that by clicking the 'update' button.

Some hosts and  developers will offer to manage your site for you. There really is no need to pay them for this unless you have no interest in doing anything webby.

I host all my own sites. When I first encountered workpress is was a bit daunting but it didn't take long to learn how it all works. Each time I do something new I add to my knowledge. If someone is managing your site for you you won't ever build up your own knowledge.
