thats a real mystery mate, you just cant decode their algo, lately they are following a variety of algo updates and the penguin has been made everfux, meaning its no longer a major update. you also had an unnamed and pigeon update post penguin.

Google introduced some algorithm for better search or ranking website such as panda, penguin, pigeon, and hummingbird and now Google announced new update on doorway page penalty algorithm.

Google is launching a new mobile-friendly pursuit algorithm on April 21st. This new algorithm will really begin looking for this mobile-friendly result which will impacting how websites are ranked in mobile searches.

Google algorithm is every changing, recently they have auto enabled every website as responsive, this has changed the fate of many websites page rank. the sites which did not implemented responsive design also came to the top pages of Google due to this. Even Google started to penalize the sites who are using black hat techniques like keyword stuffing, cloaking, door way pages etc. By depending up on the type of violation Google either bans or penalizes websites.

Good question! I was wondering the same thing, it seems Google use many of their unique methods and are constantly reinventing these methods to keep ahead of the game (as others have mentioned). I was also interested and found this article -

No, my traffic did not change at all when I switched to responsive. In fact I have tried a lot of different SEO recommendations, but the difference is always pretty small. The only two things which seem to make a big impact is good old fashioned backlinks and content.

 

Although I am now trying Microdata, so I will let you know how I get on with that!
