Hi,

 

What do you think of my site?

 

It's not done yet, I've not put in any content yet, but I guess the basic functionality is done. It is a website for (Chinese) English learners.

 

What font-type, size, weight should I use in the text on the page and the popovers (scroll down to the bottom of the page and hover over the words there to see the popovers). Keeping in mind that it is a site for English learners. Can you think of a better font/size/weight to use for the English text?

 

What do you think of the usability of the popovers? And the design of the popovers? I've thought long about how to design them and still am not satisfied - because there's still not that much room for the definitions, and so on. Move your mouse quickly over to the right of the page after you've activated a popover to see it get wider.

 

How do you think the site looks?

 

 

 

Can you think of any ideas that might be nice for me to implement?

 

 

 

I've made the site responsive at 1500px and 1000px.

 

I know the css isn't that good.

I know the footers aren't done yet, although perhaps the animation of them is.

My biggest rule of Typography is consistency. Opensans isn't a bad font face in my opinion

 

What if you was to put either English or Chinese in bold text, try give a feel of separation between the two?

 

Honestly I personally would possibly go for a more minimalistic theme for the site.

 

Maybe play about with opacity for the main background?

 

What age/skill range are you looking at approaching?

 

Personally I feel you should work on the usability a bit more. I looked on a smaller screen and you have a scroll on the pop, however I cant get to that scroll due to when I come off the hover the box goes too... What about an on click pop up box or something like that?

When you moved away from the popover link it would stay active for 0.3 seconds, if in that time you went to the popover it would stay active. Now I've made that 1 second.

Me too! But without a background image it just becomes so boring and ugly. I've been trying for weeks playing with transparencies and different background images. Eventually maybe I'll get there.

I'll play around with that. transparency, color, font-weight.

I didn't know how to do that for the longest time, or it didn't work somehow. On your suggestion I researched it again. This one has an opacity over the background image (but nothing else) of:

body {background:rgba(255,200,200,0.2);}

 

So the colors of it are slightly washed out. If I use a darker opacity on top of it, it looks saturated. You can't overdo it, otherwise it, to me, feels claustrophobic (you want to see what the image looks like without that ugly filter on top of it).

 

 

I've completely changed the thing again, casual reader, any comments?

Move on more indepth from there.

 

I would probly look at theming it more minimalistic and educational.

and the footer.

Have an informative front page and then let the site go more in-depth from there.

This is extremely confusing. There is little organisation and, as a result, everything looks like it has been thrown together.

 

It is not exactly possible to give you feedback because it is not entirely clear as to what the site will do (besides just "teaching Chinese to English learners"). I will be more than willing to provide feedback and help to draw up a few ideas for the site design when I have a clearer idea as to what the site will do and how it will perform.

I suppose you mean the popover? The layout of that isn't that good yet. This is just some stuff thrown together. When I'm done with it I hope to not have a scrollbar at reasonable resolutions.

 

Or if you mean the page itself: this is equivalent to one page in a book. I don't want it to be too long or short. If you make it too long, perhaps readers will feel like they make no progress and the loading time of all the images in the popovers would be too long. Too short and the clicking is endless. With my large type and displaying both Chinese and English, making it not scroll is difficult.

NOOOOO!!! This is to let learners read/listen to books/content for pleasure. No explicit learning and all that.

Why? I don't want it to become boring to look at. It has to be engaging to an 8 year old on their very first visit. I agree that the background picture hampers readability a lot, but without it, at the moment, the black text on a white background just still looks too ugly to me. When I reduce transparancy of the divs, the point of having a background picture is lost because you can't see it anymore, it makes you feel claustrophobic, and the page becomes unbalanced.

mmm... if I did that I feel the site would become imbalanced. Now my content div is 49% wide, and it doesn't have a margin to the left to increase the space for it. When a popover is active, you would only see a 2% slice of that in the middle. Imagine this forum but the content not centered but aligned to the left with no margin. That gray pixelated background at the right would become ugly.

 

Maybe it's equivalent, but now [edit: and now I don't know again] instead I'm thinking maybe do a white background and have the content and popovers have a differently colored background. I'd like to get away with having no margins to the right of the content and to the left of the popover. Then also I can place an image or something in the (lower)right.

Thanks for your reply Just imagine an e-book with popovers. Most words would have a popover associated with them. I haven't organized what's inside the popover yet.

 

On the one hand, you want to keep it simple: black text on white background. On the other hand, you want to make it pretty. So I'm trying to strike a balance.

I like that your eyes don't have to strain so much to read it, though this background is pretty random maybe.

 

You'll just have to imagine the header/navigation

I think your webSite and Your Thinking is good to teach how to learn English for Chinese.

Its Good Site.

But your Second column Show nathing. I appropiate you to take some time on that column and put some data as soon as possible.

and I think ur site is Not Properly done yet.

Personally, I find the website to be poorly made. I'm sorry if that seems mean or brutal, but that's just how it looks to me. It's cool that you have these sliding menus, they're neat, but it seems like that's the only part of the side you really worked hard on. You say what the website is for, but that isn't clear from the site or design. I find the backgrounds and menus to be very distracting.

 

As someone who has an interest in learning Chinese, I don't see how your site can teach it. To me, over all, it's just not well made. Like it was just thrown together.

left and right arrow... is it malfunction or you havent finished that part yet ? because i could not click it. But truly, this is rare ideas that inspiring people
