December 11, 201312 yr Guys, i need your help. I'm creating some random themes that i can add to my portofolio since i don't have any experience and this is my 4th ever designed theme. I know it's not ready yet, but i keep redesigning it since i feel like something is off about it. I want to apply for my first ever web designer job and i want to have a decent portofolio. As i said it's only my 4th theme created so far and i want to be sure that i dont make any big mistakes. December 12, 201312 yr later edit: i noticed i messed up the line height that's why it's not too readable i dint mean the line height.. google what "kerning" means..
December 12, 201312 yr I like it, if you were doing it as a commercial theme I'd worry that it looks similar to many others out there; but given that you're doing it primarily for experience/portfolio I think it's ideal. Quite often when I get the feeling that I've created a monstrosity, all that's really needed are little touches. For example, the search bar at the top could do with looking a little less square, and as Sash said playing around with the text kerning also goes a long way to making the design look right, in particular on the nav bar and headers. (nav bar text may be a pixel or two too large, or maybe it's just the kerning but there's something not quite right about it.) Many of these things I find easier to deal with once I've done my mock-up and the site is coded, partially because everything appears slightly different in browsers than on Photoshop, but mostly because my supposedly pixel-perfect layouts seem to go to sh*t once I get into coding them...
December 12, 201312 yr Author Thank you both for your responses, i will definitely consider your advice. I played a little with the text and it already looks better. After i finish the design and code it(a few days probably) i will post the end result. (nav bar text may be a pixel or two too large, or maybe it's just the kerning but there's something not quite right about it.) I think it could use some spacing, also it will look a bit better after i add the logo to the left side.
December 13, 201312 yr The design is good but you have left the footer blank. Try puting social icons other navigation links etc. & also add the logo as others said.
December 13, 201312 yr I think the site looks great. Could easily see this as the main page for any gym. My only question is the main graphic at the top. There is a part of me that loves it. But then I am also concerned that it is an image of a runner outdoors and I am assuming the site is there to attract someone to work out in a gym. Probably a silly thing to worry about, but I wanted to share with you just in case others were feeling the same way. Hope that helps.
December 13, 201312 yr Good start! My major complaint would be that the slider bisects the four top squares which is emphasised by the images being half text half photo. One of the main tenets of design is not to cut things exactly in half. Either the top of the bottom needs to be weighted. Moving the squares up slightly would give more of a push and pull effect and draw the eye in towards the content. Are you planning to develop the theme as well?
December 13, 201312 yr Author Thanks guys for your opinion, it helped me a lot. The design is good but you have left the footer blank. Try putingsocial icons other navigation links etc. & also add the logo asothers said. It's not finished yet that's why it's blank. I will definitely add social logos, thanks a lot for pointing that out. But then I am also concerned that it is an image of a runner outdoorsand I am assuming the site is there to attract someone to work out in agym. The theme can be used for a fitness site as well not only a gym. My major complaint would be that the slider bisects the four top squareswhich is emphasised by the images being half text half photo. I didn't think of that, now i know what to do. I will probably make a pull hover effect it will look awesome. Wow i can already visualize the end result. You guys rock!
December 14, 201312 yr Not a bad start, my comments... 1. No logo? 2. Content text is very hard to read, suggest using a different font, probably a bit larger as well 3. Hero image is a bit too large (in depth), suggest making it a bit shallower so the feature box images (Kickbox, Yoga etc are 1/3rd the height - that would give better balance 4. As others have said, finish off the document footer to make it look complete Are you going to convert this into a responsive HTML/CSS document? Edited December 14, 201312 yr by BlueDreamer
December 14, 201312 yr Author Thanks! I will see what i can do with the banner, but only if the stock image let's me. Are you going to convert this into a responsive HTML/CSS document? Yep, that's the plan...but i need to figure out how it will look resized first.
