ElanMan needs your help

Featured Replies

Afternoon people! :)

I'm working on what must be the 10th version of my website at the moment and would appreciate any comments.

It is only one page atm.

The copy needs plenty of work and I am aware of that (it's a little tongue in cheek atm)

As usual when doing my own site, I have started to spend too long looking at it.

Feel free to be as honest and brutal as you like!! I really don't mind.

Look forward to opinions :)

Hi Elanman

Take this with a large pinch of salt as my designs are usually naff, but I think it needs one more sharp colour in there. Perhaps around your 'E' min logo.

Apart from that I like it

Pat

Thats ace. Love it!

Really cool and a massive step up from your old site (I assume thats where i went having clicked a link).

Personal preference of course, but...

- anchor tags in white dont work for me. I think a less bright colour would work better. Applies to h3 anchors and top level nav.

- maybe tone down the black stripes in the h3 bg images and footer. Also maybe make them wider?

- I'd be tempted to put a fade on the shadow as it moves from its source in the header image. Just a subtle one, but it would make a difference.

No criticisms at all, these are just thoughts and reactions that crossed my mind when i looked.

Love the graphic at the bottom right though. :)

Thanks for the suggestions!

@kudos I totally agree about the white links. I shall have a tinker later on.

I'm glad you picked up on the shadow in the header. It has never looked right to me so I'll try adding a bit of fade like you suggest.

(yeah, my current site is awful; it's been on my to do list for ages! :) )

@pat I've been thinking about adding another colour but couldn't decide so I left as is.

I think I'll go and look at some palette generators and see what I can come up with.

I much prefer the colours on the new site :D

Though there is something about the sillouette in the bottom right corner i'm not sure about (not so much the figure, more the rays if you know what I mean) but I can't quite put my finger on it. But this is just my opinion ;)

Other than a bloody good site in the making

Thanks Helen!

The site was originally fluid width and the silhouette at the bottom went to the edge of the screen and looked a lot better than it does now.

I changed to a fixed width because I was having issues with the latest work images covering up the right hand column when the screen was resized to 800px.

See if you can put your finger on what's wrong with the silhouette (pretty please!!)

Thanks for the feedback :)

I think it is because it comes to an abrupt end, maybe if it fanned a little more, but you faded the extra rays a little.

No problems - im going to redo my site soon, so might pop some stuff up on here.

Im going to wait until firefox 3 is out proper so i can make sure it works properly all over the place though!

look forward to seeing any updates on your site.

As Helen mentioned the main problem for me is the abrubt end to the sun ray thing. May I suggest creating an absolutely positioned DIV and placing that underneath all the other layers and setting it to right: 0px and bottom: 0px? Other than that I think you need another colour in the design as right now it looks a little bit bland. Why does the E shield in the footer have a black box around it and why isn't the favicon the shielded E? Furthermore the header looks a little off, I think it's because of the way the man is drawn it appears he has no boots, so this suggests he's standing behind the floor and thus the shadow being cast looks strange. Also put 1 pixel between the shadow and the text/ma, and give the poor sod some shoes :pp.

One last thing is the background for the latest project, when I first saw the page I thought that the sunlight was a part of the radiator grilles company which would suggest you don't stray from a particular style. I know it isn't now but at first I thought it was so maybe change that by using a solid colour or making it more apparent that it's a part of your website and not the clients. Other than that good work :).

Thanks Cabbage!

I'll have a look at the bottom graphic later on and will probably do as you suggest.

The favicon is different at the moment purely because this is just a test page and I haven't bothered with it yet.

ElanMan does have boots on (honest). You just can't see them on the silhouette. I shall try to work on that a bit.

I see what you're saying about the latest project background too.

All in all, lots of tweaking to do yet!

Thanks for your comments, much appreciated! :)

Elan, I'm loving the new design so far! Good job. There is one thing which I'm unsure of and it's your choice of colour. Your copy is really good fun, and a bit tongue in cheek as you say. Don't tone it down too much; I think it has real personality. But I wonder if browns are the right way to go for such bright copy?

The other thing I wonder about is the header. I really like the concept, but with the text and silhouette centred as one element, if feels slightly unbalanced? Have you tried centring the text and having the silhouette to one side? It may not work, but maybe give it a try.

Other than that, it's really fab! Good job! B)

Hi, Good job on the site so far, the only thing I would suggest is maybe adding one more color to the mix, it seems theres a little to much salmon color, but that's just my personal opinion, good job!

Thanks notbanksy

I shall have a good think about the header and a bit more of a play.

I don't really know why I've chosen browns, they just seemed to work well together and were a bit more unusual.

I shall keep on tweaking! :)

EDIT. I've toned down the links slightly and positioned the bottom graphic to the side of the page. I think it looks a bit better.

Using FF3RC2 on Vista Business on a 1440x900 monitor it's completely broken now :(.

Thanks for the heads up Cabbage.

Could you check it again for me if you don't mind?

Thanks :)

Hello again people! :)

Wondering if you can have a fresh look at my redesign again.

I've finished another page (Dr Lurid) and made a few minor changes here and there and I still need to make some alterations to the header graphic.

The only pages that work at the moment are 'home' and 'Dr Lurid'.

Thanks in advance!

Dr Lurid hahahaha nice one mate

A good way of putting it to clients I guess, Good and evil lol

Dr lurid is very funky disco looking

Hello

Loving Dr Lurids Dubious/Unnecessary Animations - Theres nothing unnecessary about Elanman coming to the rescue. Its brilliant the way he comes to the save the day. Its more of an example of necessary animation though, funniest thing I've seen all day. :D

Rob

Hey Elan Man

It's on my list gotta pop out for curry and beer now, but will try and do first thing in the morning with a couple of espressos.

Had a look the other day and liked it so that's one comment for now.

:flm7:

Loving Dr Lurid!!!

The unnecessary animation is absolutely classic, and the quiz is a great idea. Top marks, sir! Well done! Brightened up my day no end. :)

@BenG

Good and evil eh? Let's hope that Dr Lurid can be banished forever! :D

@Roberto

Glad it's made you smile. Even I smiled the first time I saw ElanMan in action :D (it's so bad)

@headcoat

I look forward to hearing your thoughts when you get the chance.

@notbanksy

Another fan of the evil doctor!? :D

Did you try the quiz?

I could do with some suggestions for the message at the end depending on the score.

Thanks everyone for your great comments :)

I don't know if this is going to work as a vehicle for gaining clients but I'm enjoying building it and that's the most important part I guess.

I have lots of ideas for the rest of the site so if its alright I'll keep on posting when I have a new page to show.

The problem is whether I can finish it inside the next week or not.

After that, I'm not going to have much time spare and I could really do with getting it done!!

Once again, thanks for all of the feedback, it really is appreciated!! :)

Pretty ****e Really!!

LOL

Unbelievably Lurid!

My suggestion:

AAAARGGHH!! You ARE Dr Lurid!
So you think you're good do you?

Not sure about this one...

Pretty ****e Really is very funny, but possibly a bit harsh! Depends on your target audience, I suppose. Maybe nice to try and tie in the characters to the messages?

Good score = 'This is one of Elan Man's sites, right?'

Medium Score = 'Dr Lurid is watching you...'

etc...

Nice one notbanksy, I like the way you're thinking.

I really like 'Dr Lurid is watching you' :D

You've got my juices flowing again!

I agree with notbanksy, having 'pretty ****e really!' is not a good way of encouraging new business, a potential client who has spent time and money on their old website is not going to like someone saying that it is ****e (even if it is) as most people would see that as having a reflection on themselves and take offence.

Suggesting that a website is ****e is almost as bad as slagging the competition off and that is something that (no matter how tempting) you should never do!

Apart from that the design is nice, I like the colours and the sense of humour element. :D

Thanks Duck!

Yeah, the s***e comment is just filler text until I come up with something.

(Even that's better than what it originally said!! :D

Just had a quick thought about your header pic..... what if elanman was stood ON the text, would help centre it a bit.

  • Author

Thanks Helen

I see what you mean.

The word 'WEB' would then fit quite nicely inside the sun image and it would indeed centre the header better.

My only concern would be that the corresponding shadow of ElanMan on top of the text would mean an increase in the header height. (I suppose I could make ElanMan smaller though).

I shall definitely have a think about it.

I'm slowly making my way changing the messages on the Luridity form so that they are less 'harsh' (the javascript version anyway).

Thanks again :)

Is it a bird, is it a plane....!

Busy, busy in Wizelydom.... Love the site - makes a great home for the Caped Crusader. Would like to have seen some references to 'pants' design draped with offending Y-fronts - but hey!

One quick thing on the Dr. Lurid page... if you have Javascript disabled then Elanman won't come rushing to the rescue if you hover on the box. Perhaps you could have the Javascript add that part of the content. i.e. so if you have Javascript disabled it doesn't have the 'click here..' and the box (which will then do nothing). Just a thought!

Great site.

If you want a hand with the copy - I'll be back around properly in a few days (moving house tomorrow).

:D

  • Author

Hey up wizely!

Wondering where you'd got to. ;)

I'd concentrated so much on making the form work without javascript, I'd completely forgotten about poor flying ElanMan!

I shall get to it straight away! :)

  • Author

OK, I've added the portfolio page.

I'm thinking that it's a bit dull. :(

I want a very simple layout but it's possibly too simple?

As usual, any thoughts/suggestions greatly appreciated :)

Just to clarify, only 3 of the pages exist, Home, Dr Lurid and Super Sites.

Thanks

Elan - I like it! I personally don't think it's too simple. I think it's nice and clear - does what it says on the tin if you will!

There is one criticism though - if you turn off javascript, you don't get all the content...

  • Author

Thanks notbanksy!!

With javascript turned off I'm seeing all of the content?

For each site there is a Spec and a Solution. I'm seeing both without javascript.

How strange!?

Sorry Elan- I was being what's technically known as a dumbass!

I forgot to refresh the page after I turned it off... Sorry ;)

Lovin the portfolio page! Especially like the "solution" part.
