Okay, I am new to this forum.

 

I apologize if I posted in the wrong section... was thinking of posting is in the 'Freelance' section but it's also regarding about hosting. haha.

 

Anyways, I am struggling to find jobs related to web developer and most of my friend considered that I should go freelance.

 

So, in order to do this and to make my own web portfolio for everyone to see what I have to offer them. What I really need is my own server and phpmyadmin... As from my previous projects they are uploaded on my university server and I was using their phpmyadmin to access the database. But now I am no longer there, it has been taken down. But luckily I still have the files on my usb. If I can get those websites live, I can then maybe make a portfolio and link my projects for employees to see. But the thing is, I don't really wish to pay for a server so I don't know where to go from here.

 

I can certainly make my own website using Dreamweaver with no problem, but then I will need to upload the files on a web server.

 

I would say I have a good knowledge of certain programming codes. I did final year project on an e-commerce website and all that was done by myself. Looking at codes online and then adapting it my codes, tutorial etc. I wouldn't say I am a hard coder person and I would say I'm from the basic stage and can self teach myself.

It's defiantly worth investing in a good hosting package, especially if your hosting a portfolio for your customers. The last thing that you want to do is send a link, and then find out that your hosting is not working...

 

Remember you get what you pay for.

I'd have to agree that you would need to invest in your own hosting if you intend going freelance. As you're aware, web design is highly competitive so you'll need to stand out. From previous experience using free hosts, I found that the server's went down a lot, the site was always bombarded with adverts and incredibly slow. That said, the link JordanC gave, cropped up the other day and I think it's worth having a look at if you just want to get your portfolio up.

 

However, if it's a long term aspiration, get yourself a domain name and hosting. You're spoilt for choice on who you can go with and prices are so much better than they were a few years back. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've seen a few adverts where you can get a rolling monthly contract on hosting. The domain was still for a minimum of a year but if it wasn't your bag Daddy-o, you could cancel after a month.

Just go ahead and pay for hosting. With Tsohost (there may be other hosting companies the same, but that's who I'm with), you won't have to pay anything if you really don't want to.

 

Sign up for Tsohost at about £20 a year for a domain and hosting, and take advantage of their affiliate scheme. Refer your clients to sign up for hosting at Tsohost and you receive commission on their payments.

 

I signed up to Tsohost at the start of the year and have made my money back already through this. You could actually make a profit depending on the amount of referrals you make.

Infact TSO current have an offer where if you buy a .uk domain from them you can claim a free hosting package for a year. So that's what £5.99 for the first year...

You can also use Zyma . com as they offer a more reasonable and cheap hosting service than TSOhost.

Many thanks for the advice and tips... I just want to show my websites to the employees when I get interviews.

At this stage, I am no worried about having my own domain. As I have been on quite a few interview and have explained what I can do and what kind of projects that I have created. But I think I need solid evidence and to show them the websites live.

 

So before I pay for my own domain and server, I would just want to try this way first before going to freelance.

These days you can find hosting companies offering yearly hosting for £10/£15 which will be a lot better than any completely free host. You have to think what happens when your website goes down, they are not getting paid to support you as it is a hobby for them really.

I tend to agree with the general concensus - you cant really go wrong with tsohost and all for the price of a cheap meal out..

It is not so hard to find a free web host company in these days. I want to tell you that you have to do google search to find free webhosting service provider. It's given you a number of websiteswhich provide free web hosting.

Many companies are providing Hosting service at very cheap rates so rather considering a free hosting services, I would recommend you to go with a paid hosting service provider so that you can get better service as compared to the free service provider.

Free Hosting is not reliable or not worth of your time i think!

I will echo what everyone else has said. Unfortunately, with free web hosting, you are in a tricky position. If you think about it, you're getting a free service and when there are problems, you have no right to complain, no right to expect a fast resolution and there's no incentive for the web host to sort the problems promptly. If you're with a paid host, even if you're only paying £10 a year, you'll find that the host has more of an interest in you. For example, our cheapest package is £10.99/yr but we treat every customer the same and if there are any problems with our customers accounts, we're on it straight away as our intention is to keep customers long term...free hosts are no better off for you hosting your site on their servers.
