I have created this site Lovely Things for a friend who couldnt afford to pay the asking price for a proper ecommerce website.

 

Having used WP a few times before, I have a little knowledge, but none on ecommerce. Is there a good, simple Ecommerce plugin I could add to this to enable people to buy online ?

Best bet is Shopify, rather than WP.

Can Shopify be implemented into my website without causing the layout to be changed or products to be moved from the pages ?

You'd have to redo the site as a Shopify template and point the domain at Shopify's servers (it's a hosted solution).

I never recomend shopify or similer tools to anyone. because,

1. You have to pay £300/ year ( around figure )

2. You have to pay a commision on your sales. It makes your product price bit high than your compititors,

End of the year you total Profit is lower than my other option.

 

Option 2 - Create a WP ecommerce site / Use ZenCart readymade template. It comes with the whole Ecommerce solution and easy to manage than others.

 

1. To create a WP Ecommerce you can spend £400 - 600 to hire a designer/developer. And thats it. Its a one time payment.

or If you are familier with WP, you can Install it on a server from one click instalation links.

-Server and Domain name £40/year

- A Good template £45 - One time payment

- Customize it - 2 days maximum.

- Can use free but powerfull eShop or WP Commerce plugins

 

2. Your earning are yours. You just want to calculate postage and your paypal commisions with your pricing

 

So I always prefer self hosted solution. You are the Boss. You are in control. and you can change anything at any time.

You could use WPEC as it's pretty robust for a freebie but the default templates could be improved, you'll need to spend at least a few days skinning and testing.

 

For a small shops on a budget it's perfectly workable plugin.

How about Magento? Does everything you need out of the box and more plus there are loads of themes on the web to choose from.

His post says he has no ecommerce knowledge, Magento is the last thing he needs to be wrestling! We have a small team of guys that can spend a month or two devoted to Magento, how do you think the poor chap with no prior knowledge is going to handle it on his own?

Looks like the site is on WordPress already, so I would suggest WP E-Commerce and spend a bit of time creating custom CSS so that it integrates seamlessly.

WP E-Commerce is certainly your best bet if you've already built the site in WordPress.

Well, incase you do not want to use any other platform such as Magento to build your E commerce website, you could probably use WP e-commerce and Shopp plugins which offer all the basic shopping facilities to the online visitors. Hope this helps you!

Sorry, but this is pure ******. The Shopify payment covers hosting and payment processing, both of which you have to pay for on an ongoing basis with a self-hosted site. Shopify's the perfect way to start out in ecommerce, because all the expenses are relative to sales.

And where is he pulling those prices from, £400-600? Hilarious!

 

And of course "that's it, one time payment".

If you want to stick with Wordpress I can highly recommend WooCommerce which is an excellent free WP plugin made by the guys at WooThemes
