Why are these sites at the top?

Featured Replies

Bare with me, just beginning to look at SEO.

Performing a search on Google for the keywords I'm after, which is "Decorator Stockport" brings up the top sites in my area. However, those sites aren't well made (tables, bad flash, etc), contain barly any actual written content and are full of spammy things like using that keyword 10 times at bottom of the page in h6 tags or the same spammyness in titles

I thought Google noticed this stuff? It looks to me that the only way to get above them is to employ those same tactics? I don't really see how the site I'm building, and the competitors' sites, can really have a lot of people linking to them as they are just small services sites.

Any advice?

Cheers,

~evu.

I would imagine the ones at the top of google have been around for many years, I am no seo guru, but what little knowledge I have, if you build a site targetting that phrase and use good content then you wont be far off.

These sites are top of google for that keyword because it isnt a hard keyword and most websites i have checked out on that keyword phrase have had no seo actually done to there site apart from spamming there website with that phrase...

It would be easy to become top of google for that keyword within a week or 2 max!

There are only 24 people actively targeting that keyword.

Use intitle: and inanchor: to see who has it in their title and anchor text of links....

Therefore yes very easy to rank well.. just submit to a few directories and comment on a couple of blogs.

Yes, a really easy keyword phrase. Bad code and a few outgoing links does not really effect SEO much!

Just write some quality content with a good variation of those keywords, and get a couple of quality backlinks and you are top, no problem!

Well that's good to know. I'd heard domain age effects it but didn't really think it was too much of a bonus.

@Lazytycoon Could you by chance elaborate with what that information tells you? Not all of those sites are actual competitors, some are listing sites. And the ones that show up on that serp don't match the ones that show up when you search for "Decorator Stockport". I know some selectors are usefull for seo but those results just confuse me more hehe.

On the same note, is there a way to effect which site is top on the "local business results"? On that search term, Decorator Stockport, the one thats at the top of the local map result doesn't match the actual top website result.

Cheers for the advice,

~evu.

intitle:"keyword s" = This shows you who has the keyword in the page title - the page title has huge seo benefits and is the 1st thing you change when doing on page seo, therefore looking to see who has this shows you who has done some onpage seo.

inanchor:"keyword s" = This shows you who is using the keyword as the anchor text of their links. This shows you who is actively link building for the desired keyword.

Both together shows who is making a seo effort for the keywords. Generally speaking, if the number is less that 10000 then you can get to 1st page with a few directory links, keyworded content and a keyword domain.

Ah that makes more sense. Cheers for clearing it up for me :)

This SEO malarky is more complicated than first thought huh.

"Decorator stockport" brings out local listings so you should pay more attention for improving your google business listings.

Sorry for being thick - when you say 'page title' do you mean the url like www.mydomain.com/decorator-stockport or do you mean the h1 title text for the page?

Thanks

Lazytycoon was referring to the <title> tag in the <head> section of your page. Very important for seo.
