Portfolio Design

Featured Replies

Hi,

My website is in need of a real revamp. I can't produce something amazing by myself yet, but have come across some decent templates which would be perfect for my needs.

http://chocotemplates.com/portfolio-free-css-template/portfolio-6/

What do you think ? It looks very nice, I think.. and works with my name.

If you don't think it looks very good, could you recommend a template which does.

I don't really want to have to link back to it. Worth paying the measly £15~ for it ?

I don't think its too bad but i HATE the navigation its horrid in my opinion!

template is nice but agree with the above, the navigation is dreadful

I dunno. I quite like it. It's different. :p.

Suppose I could put something a bit more practical in there. :p.

What about this ?

I've never really worked with Wordpress, how easy is it to intergrate a theme like that ?

Not being funny but having a portfolio site to offer your services but using a template for it seems a bit backwards. Your portfolio should show off what YOU can do and what YOU can offer to someone. It seems silly to have a site and then have someone ask you to make something similar for them only for you to say "Oh I can't actually do a design like that, it's someone elses'.

Just my opinion, not wanting to offend.

I have to admit I was thinking the same thing.

Maybe it might be a worthwhile exercise to find a template you like and try to recreate it exactly. If there's parts of it you can't work out then ask in here. Then you can take the skills you've learned from that and use them to design your own portfolio layout...

Yeah, that's true. But I'm not really planning on doing the design side of things in the future. I know a graphic designer, so would get them to do the designs.

But.. I suppose it wouldn't hurt. I'll give it a go and post back what I come up with. You've persuaded me. ;).

It's taken me the best part of an hour to get to this point. Lots of messing around with the layout/colours.. Think I've got a decent combination now.

I don't know where / how to intergrate a navigation menu. :/

Dont then, they aint gonna know unless they check for your website, or you can put it on a website, give it a date like 2002, and say you made it and they copied it ;)

I could be cheeky. hehe. Moved onto the thought of designing my own design.

Any thoughts on the above attachments (see above posts).

No disrespect to you, man. But it is far too bland.

A portfolio should be exactly that - somewhere to display your best work. This includes the design of the site. Add a few more colours, experiment with font styles, jazz up the overall structure, that sort of thing.

Don't be afraid to experiment. This is YOUR place to shine and show off what you can do. Have a look at a few showcase sites and get a feel of what you like, what you think suits your personality and have a go at making something similar. It may not happen overnight, but you'll gradually discover a style that fits who you are.

After that? The world is your oyster. Have fun with it.

I haven't finished. Nowhere near finished :p. ;).

Never really done much designing.. so was just wondering if I was along the right tracks ect..

  • Author

Still not finished.. but I think its starting to get there.

Not sure whether the brushes add much to it( Go with the slogan), but it certainly needs something to break up the blankness. Will eventually get my logo up there once I have one made / make one.

Happy with the progress of today though. Didn't know I had it in me :p;).

Thought both of the brushes crowded it too much, so have removed the fish one.

Added a footer, and some other changes.

Need a break now. :p.

Thoughts ? Not quite sure what I could do to make it look better. Need to find something to fill the gap in the bottom right. And maybe the top left.

yeah, add more colour, doenload some gradients, and play around with them. You could always use CSS3 when coding it ;)

Add some more colour, and make sure it will match the colours of your logo.

About WP integration, it's realy easy. You can always find some turorials, but i dont think you will need.

It's definitely getting better, keep working.
