Domain banned fo cgi spamming?

Featured Replies

Hi

I wasnt sure where to post it.

Basically couple of hours ago when i tried opening my site in the browser i got a message saying "This Account Has Been Suspended

Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible"

I raised a support ticket with hosting company and they replied that my account was suspended because of cgi spamming.

But i never did any spamming, to be hinest i dont even know how to do it.

I suspect thou one of the guys i was talking about couple of weeks ago about designing aq site for him, and then the next day my emails to him were just bounced back, same happened to my email sent to hotmail account.

when i checked my site ip on some blacklist directory it did say that it was blacklisted on 2 out of 30 something lists but it was Level 1 alert and it said it wasnt serious

Do you have any ideas what could've happened and how to sort this issue out?

This is really bad to have that message instead of the site atm.. rarghh!!!! this makes me mad!

sorry for a lengthy post..

Hiya SoCreative....

do you have any scripts currently on your public hosting space that could have been hacked/abused?

no i dont think i do.

just got an email back again from the support guys. They said they reset my pass and i have to make sure i dont giveit to anyone. But I never did!!! i'm totally confused

P.s. good that the site is back up

Do you have any CGI scripts running?

The most common is Matt email script

If this is left open and not configured for specific email address and input fields then anyone can access (abuse) it

If you're running any third party scripts (particular form to emailers as said above) that you don't understand the workings of completely, you should probably remove them. Sadly, many free scripts out there are malicious, and unless you dissect them completely (by which time you could have written your own, I know, I know) you'll never know what they're doing.

on my site i only have a few php scripts that i wrote myself, and some php what i use for testing. Nothing that could be hacked into i suppose. this is really weird.

It could be one of your scripts... if your host had to suspend your account for thsoe reasons it's usually because something on your site has been compromised. Have you asked them for specific details? In a lot of cases they can identify a script or file...

That's a cPanel package your on ain't it? If so they can tell you exactly which file and the section of code which probably caused your account to be suspended - that is if they have configured servers in the right way.
