November 3, 200817 yr I have an idea, how about we all give eachother projects to work on? I will pretend to be a client and someone else the designer and they can design the site for me, and il do the same for someone else. I think that would give us some real world experience of what its like working to a brief and deadline etc... thoughts?
November 3, 200817 yr I started off with a freewebs template, then started to modify stuff, and build my own websites. The main projects that I had however, consisted of a group of friends (including myself) producing a movie, with a very popular website with a 'shoutbox' etc on. This allowed me to broaden my horizons in media editing and I also began to design websites for free for people internationally. My first paid website was for my uncle, it's in my portfolio as 'M.R. Quirke' and you can probably tell that it's very old and a very amateur website, my uncle won't allow me to re-design it however, and because he's family I feel that I should keep it in the portfolio.
November 3, 200817 yr I'm up for that. Good idea. I still think contacting your local charities is a great idea. I will be doing so after I have finished a training contract on Wednesday. If any jobs come in from my inquiries would you guys be up for working on them as a team?

November 3, 200817 yr Author yea im up for working as a team. wouldnt it be awesome if we started a WDF new media agency. the more experienced guys could do the big corperate projects the newbies can do the charities and small business sites, we got photographers, coders, illustrators, print designers, all over the world. we would have the advantages of a big agency but without the huge cost involved!
November 3, 200817 yr Both of those are amazing ideas! Either working in teams/agency or assigning each other projects! I have to go to school now (i'm 14), but let me know if we're about to get something started, I definitely want to be involved!!!
November 3, 200817 yr Yes me too. Grey squirrel reporting for duty and awaiting first assignment, sir! Who is giving me my first assignment? Can I choose who I give an assignment to? I have a person in mind
November 3, 200817 yr Yes I think at this stage it's pretty much a free for all. After Wednesday I will be contacting my local charities so stay tuned just in case we get some work in. Here's an idea to get us started. We all have a website in some form or another, either promoting our business or our services as freelancers. Why don't we say to start off with each member will allocate the re-design of their website to another member? We may all come up with a lot of great elements that on their own are OK but together could be great. What do you guys think? If you are up for that, I task guezala with re-designing mine. Let me know what you think?
November 3, 200817 yr Author ok cool. liverpool, you can redesign mine! mayhem ... i wonder whos im redesigning... cant wait, althoough the call of duty 5 beta is downloading so i might be out of action for another year
November 3, 200817 yr Ok Andy you want mine? Only barebones.... Just attached 3 parts. Can give you more but all parts are just blank pages with headings....
November 3, 200817 yr Alright the, i'll chip in with my website. Its up for redesign, i'd love to see other peoples interperation of this Just click here Do I have to allocate a member? OR is it a free for all?
November 3, 200817 yr I see that someone has already asked you, Guezala, so i'll chuck it over to andymayhem or Web Design Liverpool to have a lgo at EDIT: Over looked Brendan, so there you go mate. Go crazy
November 3, 200817 yr Any takers? OK I'll do it... I'm just finishing some training material off for Wednesday so I might not be able to start anything until after then. Also, guezala, with regards to mine just go ahead and be creative, keep or dump whatever. Remember it's only an exercise so just have at it. This is fun.
November 3, 200817 yr Infact, anyone can redesign my site. It's nice to see other's ideas. And of course, I won't nick any idea
November 3, 200817 yr Author what is this becoming!?!? instead of portfolio sites, i think it may be more beneficial to design sites we may have to design during freelancing. We are all already very experienced creating a portfolio piece for ourselves and to be honest i will prob dislike anything not created by that is representing me (unless is said really cool things about me). How about we think of an imaginary business each and give the projec to someone else and we try our best to act as real clients. it could be a photographer, bar owner, cctv company, kitchen designer, mechanic anything, just to help us understand the process of designing something for someone, to represent a business in which we dont have any experience. To do this we will have to research, the buisness, competetors, understand the needs etc.. what are everyone elses thoughts?

I thought I had posted in the wrong section again though
November 3, 200817 yr Just thought of something! Maybe our first project could be creating a site for this! It could be like a companion site to WDF, but for inexperienced designers such as ourselves to network and gain projects. Could be simple phpbb, or something else extreme... What do you think?
November 3, 200817 yr If you're interested and want me to go into more detail, just let me know and I'll post something more to make it a bit clearer!
November 3, 200817 yr My fake proposal still stands, if someone still wants to have practice with a 'client'? Also potential for some portfolio work
November 3, 200817 yr My fake proposal still stands, if someone still wants to have practice with a 'client'? Also potential for some portfolio work Oh, I thought you were taken How would you like me to do yours? Also, what do you think of the idea that I posted above? Regards, Brendan
November 3, 200817 yr Oh, I thought you were taken How would you like me to do yours? Also, what do you think of the idea that I posted above? Regards, Brendan No, not yet! Well, i've posted a proposal for a fake company; BrightBox Solutions (UK) Limited is a dynamic and progressive young company with a clear objective - to provide our clients with innovative and cost-effective business solutions through the efficient deployment and integration of information technology. It was established in 1994. The organisation brings together a multi-disciplined team able to undertake every aspect of consultancy, infrastructure design, sourcing, installation and ongoing support. Once a freelancer has decided upon, we shall contact you, along with furthur details such as information to be placed on the website. PM me with quotes for such a web site. I think it'll be good practice for those who want a first hand experience at customer.
November 4, 200817 yr FYI to everybody, I am now creating a website for Brightbox Solutions Limited (Jay D). I've already learned stuff Highly recommend it to any beginners, or simply anybody wanting to spruce up their portfolio! Regards, Brendan
November 4, 200817 yr i would help also but we need another way of talking to each other instead of on the fourms, it needs to be live chat with one another, if we all had msn we could create a conversation with all of us, or use some other program, the forums arnt the right place.
November 4, 200817 yr You can include your msn etc info in your profile and do it that way. I have it in mine if others agree.....
November 4, 200817 yr I think that would work well As I mentioned earlier, we could also make it a team project to make a website specifficaly for this!!! It could have live chat, forum, anything we needed.... The purpose would be a gathering place for newbies trying to gain experience, or experienced designers looking to help newbies or add to their portfolio. What do you think?
November 5, 200817 yr I think that would work well As I mentioned earlier, we could also make it a team project to make a website specifficaly for this!!! It could have live chat, forum, anything we needed.... The purpose would be a gathering place for newbies trying to gain experience, or experienced designers looking to help newbies or add to their portfolio. What do you think? I'm game - I'm also going to have a crack at that fake client above as it seems like something that is worth my time heh! Wouldn't mind getting in on some of these ideas either so if you guys got an msn you should add me !
November 6, 200817 yr I'd be more than happy to have a go at some-else's website! I've got My own personal website That i designed A long time ago when I didn't know as much about designing as I do now! It is: http://www.echothevoiceofgod.com/ And it is in bad need of repair!! At the moment I am working on this website for a non-profit organisation; http://www.highwoodhealth.org/test/ I'm spending all my time working on the above website so I havn't got much time for anything else but still would love to help in any way! feel free in anyone wants to redesign these websites! Cheers!
November 7, 200817 yr Agree that approaching Charities is a great idea. It not only gives you a great brand to put in your profile, but gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping someone out. I do recommend however that you treat the client/contract like anyother ad keep it professional from day one. As you may know, many large agencies set aside budgets to offer free services to clients that they consider will enhance their market reach/portfolio. Know of one agency that budgets £500k per year. Good luck!
November 7, 200817 yr This is such a good idea guys, inspired. Good luck with the re-designing. One suggestion for an ongoing motivation exercise. Why not have a template theme of the month competition? Each member wishing to participate creates a working template on the chosen theme and all members vote for a winner at the end of the month. The winner chooses the theme for the following month? I like the idea of helping charities with their sites. Maybe thats and idea for a new site linking newbe designers with organisations looking for free services? Maybe I'll have a go at that for us! Tracy
November 7, 200817 yr Seems my idea is sort of out there already, Goodwill Gallery. Not a bad site to offer your services on if your looking for work to pad out your portfolio.
November 8, 200817 yr Seems my idea is sort of out there already, Goodwill Gallery. Not a bad site to offer your services on if your looking for work to pad out your portfolio. Thanks for the link! It's good to know Each member wishing to participate creates a working template on the chosen theme and all members vote for a winner at the end of the month. The winner chooses the theme for the following month? This is an awesome idea! I hope we can somehow work it out If there's anything I can do to help, just give me a shout! Regards, Brendan
