Just finished just about fine tweaking the frontpage of this website. Just wanted some critique for the looks, the header may change alot soon as I'm adding a "Download PDF" option next to the search bar (yes to confuse visitors even more) not my idea but oh well.

 

Anyway, its basically an advanced Wordpress Theme; thanks for your time.

 

And ofc only the "HOME" page is done.

I really like it, but it seems quite plain with so much white? On the background image, made the white areas a very pale green.

I like the heder, looks nice, but i get a horizontal scroll bar. Also, to see all of the header, i have to scroll down a little.

Its a concept, I am not sure if they will or wont.. its a London Bus Competition, if it wins, London - and then likely it will spread across the UK/Globally. Battery operated bus so no pollution.

 

Every wheel in the bus has its own electric motor, these things would make a car do 0-60 in 2seconds.. which makes you wonder why we don't see electric cars?

Yeah you will, its semi 1024x768 safemode, its margin related, will be looked at but I've got tonight to finish the site so it's not an issue for me ATM, it is viewable fullscreen at 1024 though.

I asked for front page thoughts the guy cannot read, he is one of those people who writes a reply before reading. It even says front page on the post title.

Although you said Front Page, I believe that he just made an observation on the other pages. Whether you knew of the issues or not you may have missed something and it's good that he pointed it out.

 

I feel that you do the same with regards to reading posts first as well.

 

Look, this forum is not about fighting or slagging each other off. Let's change the tone and try and both be constructive with our comments.

I like the Front Page I think its well designed and I like the colour scheme. The Graphic work on the buses are great. And the footer is very user friendly.

The logo looks very professional and relevant with the website content.

Like the concept, but my feeling was that there's too much "image" up top, and you have to scroll down a long way to start reading any useful details. IMHO this is the sort of site you need to present the homepage with little or no vertical scrolling for the average 1024x768 user - give people the key points and put the text copy on sub pages and create a "tour" link link structure.

I totally agree mate, its an annoying shame my client does not, he is very set in how he wishes it to look I suppose its a plus compared to clients who are not such and make you change things all the time lol!

 

It has to look alot like the PDF, there is far too much content on The Big Idea page, he's merged 4 other nav pages worth of content into just the big idea, which has a crapload of images, going to be a right bandwidth whore and take forever to load (some 30+ images ASWELL as the framework), bah!

The design is OK, but a little boring. It does not really excite me.

The best thing about the front page are the bus pictures. Without these the site would be nothing.

Ah - I know the feeling!

I really like it. Just two points really. The images of the buses are too big (this might be one occasion when a splash page might actually work for a site). Second, not sure that the green swirly background is giving anything relevant to the site.

 

Other than that, I think it looks crisp and clean and the images that you're using are fab.

Its eyecatching, but there are a lot of little details could help lift this page, as you don't seem to have thought about lines and positioning that could really make this page stand out for being clean and simplistic (something you said you wanted)...as after all creating a plain simple site that still has that wow to it is hard thing to do.

 

Look at positioning, for example the images on the right of the screen showing the two different bus types. If you drop the first one down so that it is in line with the text that starts "This chameleon bus will..." This will make it look as if you have considered the position of the images and the layout, and also give a cleaner look to the site based on the lines that you would of created.

 

The bullet points could really stand out if you space each one out a little more (not the line-height just the space between each point). I mean the whole point of having bullet points is so that each point stands out from each other, while yours all have the same spacing between the lines and the change in point it just looks like a paragraph rather than different points. It might look a bit better if the bullet point itself was a different colour to the text next to it, maybe a green so that it matches the larger text and brings a bit more of a flow to it and also incorporates your colour scheme a little more.

 

It makes no sense why 'Download the OnRoute PDF' is in two lines, so either decrease the size of it if you want it to start where you have it, or give it a bit more width so that it is on one line instead of two.

 

Also I haven't gone through all your code, but I can see at least one error that would mean that your front page isn't WAI-AA compliant, while I scanned through it...as you are such a great coder I will let you find this one very simple thing yourself

 

On a personal opinion scale, I don't like the design of the menu, I like the red bar and the hover, but the text is odd. I think its because everything is bright, bold, big and in your face and the menu takes on none of these characteristics at all, so looks like it was an after thought as it is so far removed for the rest of the design that something about it just looks wrong and poorly designed in the context of the rest of the site.

Yeah I agree, its fine tweaking, the position of the "download link" needs to change slightly too.

 

Also I haven't gone through all your code, but I can see at least one error...

Sites designed around a PDF they have, is supposed to look like that, although I'd class it as improved over the original PDF.

Are you saying that mags and news papers don't take care of the little details when designing? I don't think your design resembles a newspaper layout...magazine maybe, but with magazine layouts your could start your main columns at the same place after the bus images and have the first line of the text line up with the images. Or would you just like me to tell all the magazine designers that I work with that they don't have an eye for detail.

 

I like how the menu looks, I really like that its a continuation of the logo, I just think that maybe even something as simple as making the text bold could help it fit with the design. As at the moment the text on the menu has none of the rest of the designs characteristics (as I have already said), which is a shame as it detracts for the nice work you have done with the rest of the layout.
