My New Design Site

Featured Replies

Hi there, new to this forum and have just finished my new design site, just wondering if anyone can give me so feedback.

I was going for the simple look to just try and get some information across.

I'm pretty pleased with it but always good to have other peoples opinions.

It is also the first time I have written all the code myself too!

Thanks

Phil.

Welcome to WDF, Phil.

Design's cool. Nice n simple. Good work.

Had a slight problem viewing all of the text on the page though.

Tried in both FF n Chrome n in both cases when I scroll to the bottom of the page (vert res 600px) some of the text ends up hidden behind the menu bar.

Thanks, must have missed that spacing problem on a few pages, fixed now I think..

Yep, so it is.

Ok I put a bg on it, looks a bit nicer I think.

But just realised I have a problem. If anyone has internet explorer...

In IE it seems the bottom menu is over the the right, can anyone see why? The css file is very simple and i cant see why this is happening..

thanks

phil.

*edit, fixed. like the new bg?

footer id called header?

So I like the design, but your portfolio section needs work. You need to show some cropped screenshots of your work, and right now you only have 2 clients and then your own websie, which reflects on you that you have little experience?

yeah it was originally at the top! didnt seem much point in changing it as everything is pretty simple.

Yeah i tried having cropped photos in the portfolio section but the square-ness of them didnt look good and im not really a fan of curved edged boxes. i may have a play about with some other ways of doing it, though any suggstions very welcome.

i know there are only 2 sites listed but ive only just started doing this really, hoping the website would give me some more work. I have another 2 jobs in the works which should be online in a week or so.

nice site. nice and clean. i would just shadowbox.js or lightbox for your portfolio. text links don't cut it if you ask me. plus it takes people off your site. 8)

Updated portfolio page, still not happy with it though. I dont really like to use lightbox.

Thanks!

Does anyone know of a really good seo guide? I have read a few but they have been very brief so far.

background is good. Fits the theme.

As for the portfolio, might wanna consider the following:

i) making the pic samples wider.

ii) making the pic samples into clickable links in addition to the titles.

iii) any particular reason the font size is smaller here than on the rest of the pages? or the different style of titles?

Another thing, slap some big borders on your portfolio images, your logo has a thick border so your portfolio images should follow suite!

Tried that and it didnt look great, will do the other stuff though so thanks for all the advice!

I like it a lot; it's much better than the ones shown in your portfolio. All I can really say is to expand your portfolio with as much as you can. If you can't get clients right now you can even expand it by making mockups and demonstrating your design potential, that's what they want to see

Thanks OH.

Yeah those sites in my portfolio are pretty old and iffy but thought I'd put them in anyway, working on 2 new sites for clients as we speak that are much more like my newer work!

Heyy.. I like the site man!

You should put a hover effect on your navigation though. Maybe make it turn the same color as that red logo stroke? :)

Anyways, nice site all around. Works perfect in FF 3.

It is a nice site and there's nothing wrong with it, but you're getting far too an easy ride!

You say this "Too often I see websites offering "cheap and affordable services" with a portfolio of badly designed sites full of broken links and pointless content."

And then the entire front page is about what "I do" or "aim to do" and it goes on through the whole site - it's all about you! There's also a lot of "pointless content" - mostly the same recycled "I do this" and "standards compliant that". If you're going for the simple, job done, no waffle approach then it doesn't fit.

Also, it is very nice looking, don't get me wrong, but I don't understand why it looks that way. It's a fantastic layout - plenty of space and I love the bottom navigation but the big 'splurgy' page titles and oversized/ overly dark content headings don't fit what you're saying IMO.

It's a great design but, the freak that I am, I like to see what a site looks like tied in with what it's saying. Feel free to ignore!

Thanks for taking the time to write that, I see where you are coming from.

Maybe I need to re-word some parts of the site, when I say pointless content it was more aimed at sites that include 'clever' features like drop-down nav boxes when there are only 3 pages, that sort of thing.

With my 'design' section I am just trying to get across what I do. I think if you were to take the whole simple design thing too far then you would end up with a white page with black text and no style!

Again with the oversized page titles, they would be simpler if they were just plain text, but I think they look better as they are.

My first design site was literally, header=phil thomas design, content=mailto e-mail link... And people said it was too simple!

Hi Phil

Checked your site out it looks good, colours go well and all the information needed is on there.

Re-built my site as i was a little bored today.

Im not sure which is better...

New one: http://www.philthomaswebdesign.co.uk/

The new one will not look good in IE6 but i dont care. im sick of it.. but if someone knows why to top navbar buttons do not work in ie7 i'd give them a biscuit.

widescreen in ff on a mac it looks how its suppose to.

for the new one i may try and set up some kind of 'scroll to' animation for when you click a link.

Cityscape, kinda makes me think it was a template you downloaded, but no one who makes a template is daft enough to put HTML and CSS Validity links below the email address... mmmm - move em, its the first thing people say, and lets face it, dorris who thinks the only browser on this world is IE5.5 is going to get confused.

EDIT: You changed that in your new one.

The grey and green is icky, www.colourlovers.com

I love it especially the navigation. I do think the green doesn't work and it think you could try and make the sections less huge.

  • Author

the green is my fav bit! maybe it looks different on yours, ive had issues with photoshop displaying slightly different shades to the rest of my progs.

what do you mean about the sections being huge?

If colours are looking different in PS, are you setting the colours to CMYK or RGB, CMYK colours are far from pretty on-screen.
