Yep i agree.. but if your writing cross platform for all the current popular broswers like IE 6 & 7, Firefox, Safari etc you'll more often than not find they work with older browsers anyway..

 

if you do find something that only doesnt work on IE 5 or netscape (anyone remember that lol!) personally if its a simple fix and wont mean youve gotta start re-messing with other browsers then do it.. if its something thats gonna take time and mean ur gonna have to re-test every other browser then I wouldnt bother! But like i said more often than not if ur designing cross platform they work anyways

That's all I use now.... It's fab. Has anyone else discovered the right click > inspect element function.... I love it! I do it to practically every site I visit!

I'm not too keen on Chrome, I mean once it has the addons that Firefox has then we'll be good friends. As far as old browsers. i design for IE 6 + 7 and FF All the others usually fall in line

As always I will say that's a stupid thing to do as a large percentage of the internet users use those two browers so why would you want to neglect a large percentage of the net?

 

I say its fine to drop a browser from your support when the percentage is so low that chances are that it is a very low possibility you will have someone using the browser visiting your site.

 

 

One thing I can't stand at the minute is this let get IE6 to die, a lot of people use IE6 and as good web designers and developers we should be supporting these people. After all people pay us to build sites that reach the largest possible audience, if coding for IE6 is too hard then maybe you should practice some more, no one said being a web designer is easy

I completely agree with Dizi. IE6 unfortunitly is still used all over the world. Not supporting it would be really stupid and IE 7 is the current IE out there. I know IE sucks but it's a fact of life for a Web designer. Honestly FF has been sucking a lot lately.

Wait till we get HTML5 then the fun really begins.

We still use HTML but we now use XHTML standards on top. I don't really check my sites in IE6, only the latest versions such as IE7 and FF3 (possibly FF2 too). I might check IE6 on my old desktop later on, however.

I always try my best to get sites working in as many browsers as possible.

 

I used to think (when I first started out) that if people were still on older browsers, I mean really old browsers, then that was their fault and if they hadn't upgraded to at least a browser one above theirs then they really weren't the type of people I would think would be worth marketing towards.

 

I have somewhat changed my opinion on that now though.

 

With regards to Google Chrome. I absolutely love it. It's so fast and streamlined. It cuts out all the junk and leaves you with the features you really need. It's my browser of choice now. I can't wait until you are able to start getting plugins for it though, as I would really like to have SEO for Firefox and also some sort of Developers Toolbar.

Same here, but you also need to watch out for Opera which has a relatively small but very loyal following.

Pay very close attention to Opera if you use the :first-letter pseudo element. I've had no end of problems with it -- these problems have simple solutions, but if you client uses Opera, they'll think less of you for having a broken site
