Well basically i'm looking for a highly customisble CMS. I've noticed that with alot of CMS you basically have to work around their design and structure.

 

I've recently be using 'CMS from Scratch' as its easy to install and fits perfectly to any design i create. However, i've noticed there are a few bugs with the program, and it doesn't seem to be updated very often. It's also based as a flatpack file and doesn't require the use of any databases.

 

Anyways, am looking for a higly customisble CMS that i can easilly implement into my designs. I'm new at the whole CMS scene, and was looking for something simple to start me off as pratice.

I always recommend members either:

 

ExpressionEngine (Free or Paid - depending on license needed) It really is extremely versatile and easy to customise. The support of ExpressionEngine is amazing plus they have excellent supported modules e.g. a Forum, Wiki, PhotoGallery etc. - It's what I use for my own websites. - Plus due to the permissions system you can easily set access levels per user group e.g. only members can do certain things etc.

Wordpress - Free with a huge list of plugins and great user base/knowledge center.

hey ben!, Thanks for the link to ExpressionEngine, seems a really good CMS and is exactly what i'm after!. However, i do have a few questions regarding it.

 

I noticed you may have to pay depending on what you need it for. As i was considering using this on a clients website, would i have to pay?. Also if i did pay, would i have to continually pay if i wanted to use it again on another clients website.

Your most welcome. You would have to pay if the clients website was for commercial purposes e.g. selling products or a service or to be of a business nature.

 

You would have to buy each license for each client/website unfortunately. Personally I don't find this a problem as I make sure I include the price of the ExpressionEngine CMS system within my price I quote them, that way I don't lose out.

hmmm i'm a bit put off by the pricing to be honest. I know its a good CMS and all, but paying that much each time around seems a bit to much to me.

They do offer a discount, the more licences you but the cheaper they get. In all honesty £50/£125 for you first licence is a very small sum to add to the cost of a CMS driven site, especially when EE is as flexible as it it. Put it this way, you could easily spend that in time locating, installing and setting up 1/2 dozen plugins for XYZ CMS when EE does most of it right out the box.

Absolutely agree with BlueDreamer, the cost of ExpressionEngine is incredibly good value when you consider what you get for it and the amount of time you could waste with other approaches.

 

As Ben points out you simply add the cost of the CMS to the overall project cost.

 

Because it is a licensed product with proper support in place you might find that it is far more interesting to many clients. This in turn could help you win more business.

 

Don't be put off just because it is not 'free'. Look for the opportunity to make more money by using it :-)
