  1. You would hope so lol. Not everyone has common sense though. I am guessing their first move would have been to hire someone to try to steal the existing work. Which is why I wanted the theme files and graphics off the server.
  2. Thanks. Thank goodness for contracts. While mine unfortunately didn't cover everything, it covered a lot of it. Enough that I at least have some recourse. Taking the site down, while not as satisfying as getting paid, will be some solace.
  3. If I take them to small claims court in Canada, I still have to pursue them for payment or get a collections agency to. I have no confidence whatsoever from my dealings so far that it will make any difference. They have the resources to keep going to court and drawing this out. I don't. I learned a valuable lesson in not putting a site live until after final payment clears. So I will cut my losses, and leave it at that. So, they will either be not using my work for free anymore, or they will decide to pay to get the site back up. The terms of the contract give me site ownership until final payment, and the right to take the site down for non-payment. It also gives full authorization to access the server. So I am going to use those options. The only thing the contract didn't cover (has been revised) is that final payment had to clear BEFORE the site went live. I normally took 1/3 down, 1/3 on approval, 1/3 when job was done. Had no issues for years. Thanks!
  4. If I delete a theme (only the theme), and then upload it at a laster date (a backed up copy) will it work fine? I have a client who has broken a payment contract. I have put their site in maintenance mode, but I would like to remove the theme I heavily customizes as well in case they figure out how to access the Wordpress install. If payment comes through, I'd like to be able to quickly restore it though. SO basically I just want to get the files of the server temporarily. I'd like to do the same with the 'uploads' folder as well because that is where most of the graphics I worked on are stored. Can I just delete both temporarily, and upload them later? Thanks a lot.
  5. Hey guys. I am working on a Wordpress site. They have a catalogue which is about 30 individual PDF files (one for each page). Here is the link to the old catalogue: http://www.technicor.ca/content/catalog.shtml I am looking for suggestions as to the best way to set this up in Wordpress. I'd like to have something similar to the frame structure it currently uses in the sense that I'd like people to be able to click the links and have the pages open in some kind of window/frame without a new page opening each time. Basically something that replicates frames I guess. I thought about Lightbox type scripts, but the viewer needs to be able to have the Print/enlarge/etc menus for the pages. I don't know if any lightbox scripts can provide that. I am learning my way around Wordpress, and just can't think of a way to approach this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  6. I would love to. They have their hosting setup through Intuit. I guess it's an ok service for people with no web design experience who want to get a site up. They let you download free template driven software etc. But if you want to upload your own designs, or configure things like forms at all it's horrible. Unfortunately, they already paid for it and don't want to change. Thanks
  7. I am working on a site for a client who unfortunately has some horrible web hosting. Changing hosts would be ideal to solve my problem, but he doesn't want to do it. He would like a contact from on his site, but the hosting does not allow PHP or CGI. In fact they hardly allow anything... from their site: I love how they 'only' exclude those types. Anyway, does anyone have any idea for a workaround? Does anyone have any experience with the 3rd party form processing sites? If so, can anyone recommend one? Thanks
  8. That fixed it! Thanks a ton for the tip.
  9. Hey guys. First of all, I would definitely be classified as a noob, so if there is messy coding, I am still working hard at learning. I have a page here: http://www.stevenvolpe.ca/test/paintings.html CSS is here: http://www.stevenvolpe.ca/test/css/paintings.css The page appears as I want in every browser except Explorer (6 through 8 ). The navigation menu does not display the same in those browsers. It kind of bleeds over on to 2 lines. If I space it a little wide, the navigation does not line up right with the logo. (bottom of 'volpe' and bottom of nav should line up...see below) In Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome, the bottom of the menu is aligned with the bottom of the logo text. And it 'fits' fine into that area right of the logo. It appears correctly. Can anyone give me some tips on how to fix the problem in Explorer? Thanks in advance. EDIT: I just checked on browsershots.org, and the menu appears to be ok in IE 8. So it's an IE 6 and 7 issue now.
  10. Thanks for the work, I am going to look into this in the a.m. It's been a long day and I don't have the focus for this tonight lol. Need fresh eyes.
  11. Thanks for the help. It's a little over my head, but I am up for trying it. I just have practically no experience with Flash. All the images are the exact same size. They are all cropped to be perfect squares.
  12. Thanks for the tip, but that is way more complicated/advanced than I what I need. I don't even need the images to have links. I just basically need 9 thumbnails in a 3x3 grid. Each one is like it's own little slide show. Each mini slide show would have 3 images. The person would have no interactivity with it whatsoever. It would just be for show. Thanks
  13. Hey guys. Ok here is the deal. I am working on a small site for an artist. On his main page he wants a thumbs of 9 of his paintings, set up so that they make a large square grid. Each one of those squares would have a 'slide show' effect, and transition to one other painting. I guess it would just loop after that. What do you guys think is the best way to go about this? I don't have any experience working wish Flash, so I was hoping for a non-Flash solution. If Flash is the only good way of achieving this, and anyone can recommend a tutorial I would give it a shot. But I would definitely rather use a non-Flash solution. Thanks in advance for any tips.
  14. Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how to center this horizontal menu (modern brick from dynamic drive). Thanks in advance. <style type="text/css"> /*Credits: Dynamic Drive CSS Library */ /*URL: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/style/ */ #modernbricksmenu2{ padding: 0; width: 100%; border-top: 5px solid #D25A0B; /*Brown color theme*/ background: transparent; voice-family: "\"}\""; voice-family: inherit; } #modernbricksmenu2 ul{ margin:0; margin-left: 40px; /*margin between first menu item and left browser edge*/ padding: 0; list-style: none; } #modernbricksmenu2 li{ display: inline; margin: 0 2px 0 0; padding: 0; text-transform:uppercase; } #modernbricksmenu2 a{ float: left; display: block; font: bold 11px Arial; color: white; text-decoration: none; margin: 0 1px 0 0; /*Margin between each menu item*/ padding: 5px 10px; background-color: black; /*Brown color theme*/ border-top: 1px solid white; } #modernbricksmenu2 a:hover{ background-color: #D25A0B; /*Brown color theme*/ color: white; } #modernbricksmenu2 #current a{ /*currently selected tab*/ background-color: #D25A0B; /*Brown color theme*/ color: white; border-color: #D25A0B; /*Brown color theme*/ } </style>
  15. Problem solved. Someone pointed out the missing tag. I was missing a </div> tag at the end of the menu. Thanks
  16. Ok, I downloaded the Modern Brick menu from Dynamic Drive. The menu is working great, but when I make other links on my page, they seem to be taking on the styles from the menu. I am not sure if it's an issue with the menus code, or something with my page. Before you look at my code, I know I shouldn't be combining tables and CSS, but this is just a mockup I was trying to get quickly done when I ran into this problem. Here is the body of my html: <body> <div id="wrapper"> <div id="banner"></div> <div id="content"> <div id="modernbricksmenu2"> <ul> <li id="current" style="margin-left: 1px"><a href="index.html" title="Home">Home</a></li> <li><a href="howitworks.html" title="How It Works">How It Works</a></li> <li><a href="operation.html" title="Operation and Maintenance">Operation and Maintenance</a></li> <li><a href="faq.html" title="F.A.Q.">F.A.Q.</a></li> <li><a href="contact.html" title="Contact">Contact</a></li> <li><a href="links.html" title="Links">Links</a></li> </ul> <p><br /> </p> <div align="center"> <table width="776" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="517"> <div align="left"> <h1>SIMPLY THE BEST...</h1> <div class="just"> <p>INCINOLET electric incinerating toilet incinerates all human waste immediately to clean, germ-free ash, as little as a tablespoonful each use. 17. Thanks for the input guys. Looking into the links provided. It may be beyond a simple contact form for a couple of reasons. ( A ) I think he wants the services categorized, and put on separate page on the site. So I think it will need to be something more like a cart, and would need an "add to cart" type function. Though in this case it would be more like "add to work order". ( B ) I think he wants the form he receives through the email to look decent. He has very little computer knowledge, so he wants to be able to just print out what comes in the email. So it would need a bit of formatting (eg his logo etc.). I am going to look into the cart above, but if anyone has any other existing solution that might fit let me know. If not, I will look into the option of having someone else do some of the work.
  18. Ok, a client is looking for something similar to a shopping cart: He does home repairs. He basically wants to have people be able to select what work they would like done on their house from a list of options (and be able to select multiple options). After they select the options, they get a summary page. A page is emailed to the repair guy that he can just print out like a work order to take to the job. So it's pretty much like a shopping cart, but with no online money transactions or payment methods needed. I am not sure if I am going to work on the project because I don't do a lot of work like this. I am decent at working with existing scripts, I just can't write anything from scratch. So if there is an existing solution that does something like what he's looking for that I can tweak, I could likely do the job. So does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend trying VMware Fusion was well. I have used both an personally think WMware is much better. Do a search for current 'parallels vs vmware' and you will find that's the general consensus.
  20. Ya it's sad. If they would meet me somewhere in the middle, I would gladly use one of them. But they just don't seem interested. As a small business, I would rather support a small business. I would pay more if the service was worth it, but it's not. The product I get from the online places so far has been great, so I end up going with them.
  21. Ya I gotta agree with Zig. I have only used their 'premium' cards and they have been exceptionally good quality for the price. My clients have been very happy, especially considering the prices. The product was the exact same as what I saw when I previewed it and placed the order. If this weren't the case, there is no way I would be using them. I have used Overnight prints before who offer a few more options, and slightly better quality from my experience. You can get rounded corners, double sided glossy etc. As far as online printers go they are the best I have tried. I stopped using them because they only ship UPS to Canada now, so I get nailed with UPS's sham fees. Once you sign up for any of these sites you constantly get sent 'deals' as well. You normally pay about 50% or more less than what the prices on the site are. So it's worth signing up before you plan to make an order and wait for email deals. Anytime I need my own cards refreshed, I just wait till they have their "250 premium cards for free" offer on. Which is almost bi-weekly. Anyway, not arguing with anyone else's experiences. Just passing on my own. Something could happen to change my mind, who knows! I try to support local businesses as much as I can, but the local printers are not interesting in working our deals with designers at all. They even tend to be rude.
  22. I think I kind of agree. I don't dislike the 'sketchy' items at all. In fact I really like the building art. But I would either have the whole site following that theme, or not use it. I don't know if both mix well though. Right now it looks like 2 separate designs almost. Both are good, but they don't mix. eg. the services box could have a 'sketchy' border/background to it that would match the buildings well. But then it would look even more like 2 different sites. If I applied the 'sketchy' idea to the Services box, I would also apply it to the menu and other areas of the site as well. The "sketchy" theme might not look quite as 'professional" in the traditional sense though. But I personally think it would look pretty cool. But you should make a choice and go one way or the other.
  23. I have no input on your comment idea, just another layout tip. Hopefully Zigpress (forum user) won't mind me linking his page, but it's one of my favourite portfolio designs I have come across. Mainly because of how well it uses the space. The lightbox boxes that popup contain the detailed info on each piece. It makes the layout of the portfolio page itself very clean. http://www.zigpress.com/portfolio.php
  24. This might be not be a huge help, but there is a piece of Mac software called Rage Domainer that does what you are looking for I think. http://www.ragesw.com/products/domainer.html . You are likely not on a Mac, but maybe you can use the product page for keywords to do a search for PC software that does the same thing.
  25. I checked the stats on my own home page the other day. 16% of viewers were still using IE 6. Which is actually more users than were using IE7 on my site.
