Cart/Programming suggestions

Featured Replies

Ok, a client is looking for something similar to a shopping cart:

He does home repairs. He basically wants to have people be able to select what work they would like done on their house from a list of options (and be able to select multiple options). After they select the options, they get a summary page. A page is emailed to the repair guy that he can just print out like a work order to take to the job.

So it's pretty much like a shopping cart, but with no online money transactions or payment methods needed.

I am not sure if I am going to work on the project because I don't do a lot of work like this. I am decent at working with existing scripts, I just can't write anything from scratch. So if there is an existing solution that does something like what he's looking for that I can tweak, I could likely do the job.

So does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

why not just use a cart but remove the payment option?

Cubecart for example allows the customer to print off an order form. Would this suffice?

If you need any help or advice let me know.

Sounds fairly easy to code in PHP or whatever language you like to code in - all it will be is just a glorified contact form.

I agree with SamG, It's basically just an email form.

Very simple to do, could get one custom made by one of us lot for a couple of quid, not that expensive, to do it yourself, would take, couple of hours, if that.

Try this tutorial: http://php.about.com/od/phpapplications/ss/form_mail.htm

Trusty About.com! Hehe.

Thanks for the input guys.

Looking into the links provided.

It may be beyond a simple contact form for a couple of reasons. ( A ) I think he wants the services categorized, and put on separate page on the site. So I think it will need to be something more like a cart, and would need an "add to cart" type function. Though in this case it would be more like "add to work order".

( B ) I think he wants the form he receives through the email to look decent. He has very little computer knowledge, so he wants to be able to just print out what comes in the email. So it would need a bit of formatting (eg his logo etc.).

I am going to look into the cart above, but if anyone has any other existing solution that might fit let me know. If not, I will look into the option of having someone else do some of the work.

Hi mate,

If you want me to build the cart and edit it, let me know.

You could still use a contact form, just make any users directed to the form page, they simply choose what options they want and the guy can have a nice HTML formatted email if he wants.

A cart system is severe overkill for this project as he would have to log in to the system in order to retrieve his 'jobs' whereas if it's emailed to him all he has to do is print it from his inbox, end of story.

If you're not too comfortable coding, then either myself or someone else on here can sort you out a PHP form for a bit of currency, it's not a big job to sort out and you could get on with designing his actual website.

Just a thought. :)
