How much do you suggest I charge for this site?
Hi all, I've created the following site for a client as a freelancer Everything on the site is my own work, aside from the content and PDF which were provided by him. I had been working on the site from 16th February and today he has given me the OK to upload it to the domain he bought himself (I don't charge an hourly rate). If it matters, this is my first site created entirely in CSS (I had created table-based sites before). Thanks for reading! Niall

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
I changed the line-height to 18 and it's now appearing correctly on all three browsers!

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
I changed the paddings and margins in every class to 0 and changed word-spacing, letter-spacing, white-space, font-style, font-varient and line-height in the body class to normal, but it hasn't made any difference. Here's what the page looks like in Dreamweaver: http://www.nialldevlin.com/Katrina%20Tagga.../Untitled-1.jpg

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
I've checked the site on my Mac notebook at work using FF and Safari and in both it looks incorrect. The Mac uses a lower resolution than my Vista Ultimate laptop at home. It seems to me that the problem is to do with line-spacing in the body class (yet no line-spacing is specified). I also used a lot of different margin settings, could that be the problem?

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
Hmmm, I've just had a look at the site on Firefox, Safari and IE and lo and behold IE isn't showing it properly. In IE the text appears as one line less than I want it to causing the Niall Devlin line to move up. The page with the image is how I want it to look (and how it does look in FF and Safari, minus the smooth text). Incidentally when I view it in Dreamweaver CS4 it looks as it does in IE (though switching to Live View displays it correctly). Here's the CSS

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
To me the standard text looks a little too sharp and defined, for the moment I'll use it though (sorry, but it just puts me off, like it doesn't suit the style of the rest of the site). I've used a lighter colour so as to match the image as my client said she liked it that way. Here it is so far

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
Thanks very much for your thorough and helpful replies Dizi, you made a lot of good points so I'm going to try to steer clear of that method. Also, it's a site for a client. If anyone knows of a good way around this (preferably making the standard text look as good as the image) it woul be greatly appreciated if you posted it here! Niall

Using CSS to hide text - Is it OK?
Hi all, For a website I'm creating I noticed that my text looks better as an Photoshop image rather than standard text added using Dreamweaver. Main text as a Photoshop image Main text added in Dreamweaver In Photoshop I set the anti-aliasing method to Smooth, but apart from that the text is identical. What I thought of doing was keeping the text as part of the background while using CSS to hide the actual text so that it can still be used for SEO. Will this result in penalisation? I read through this page on it but still can't be sure how acceptible my use is. Or is there a way in which I can make the text look as it does in Photoshop? Many thanks, Niall

CSS is stopping a script and vice versa
How can I use fewer libraries, I don't understand the term. Here's what I'd been using for the menu.

CSS is stopping a script and vice versa
Hi all, I recently added a CSS drop-down menu to a site I created (many thanks to the great people here in helping me do so! ), but I noticed that in some pages it doesn't work; namely here and here. I then found that when I removed the following 2 lines of code the menu worked again: <script type="text/javascript" src="Scripts/prototype.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="Scripts/scriptaculous.js?load=effects"></script> This lead me to believe that the source of the problem was with the Lightbox script I added (of which those 2 lines are required to work). Is there any way in which I can have the menu and the Lightbox working together? Cheers! Niall

Beginner with CSS - Having some trouble and need help!
I managed to sort the problem out by adding another div and experimenting withing padding.

Beginner with CSS - Having some trouble and need help!
Hi again! I feel a little silly asking this as I feel I should already know this, but how can I vertically align the Adobe Reader icon on this page: Site http://www.nialldevlin.com/Seamus%20O%27Domhnaill/ (the text editor won't let me insert a link for some reason) CSS http://nialldevlin.com/Seamus%20O%27Domhna...SS/template.css (sorry if it's messier than it should be!) I'm also lost on how to correctly format the text in the newsletter class. I'd like the part in brackets to have the normal font weight while the rest is bold. I can't get it to centre vertically either. I tried adding vertical-align: middle; to the CSS (both by adding as raw code, and using Dreamweaver's tools) but that did nothing. Niall

Beginner with CSS - Having some trouble and need help!
OK, so I pretty much have the first draft of the site as I want it, here it is! And the CSS stylesheet. I got around the text wrapping by adding a left margin to the image (it wasn't behind the image, just right up against it) and after further CSS experimentation I was able to solve the email link problem. I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me if I'm on my way to a CSS based site, is the code OK? Niall

Beginner with CSS - Having some trouble and need help!
The Website (still a WIP!) The CSS Stylesheet The hover seems to work fine now thanks! But if it will pose a problem for some users like ZigPress says what is a better alternative? Another couple of questions: How can I get the text in the body tag to wrap around the image instead of appearing behind it? Why is the email link (near the end of the body tag) appearing as white when I never specified a colour in the CSS? Thanks! Niall

Thanks very much Website Design Liverpool, that works great! Sorry BlueDreamer, but I don't understand what you mean in your post, can you please explain? On another note (I thought I'd asked this as a continuation of my first post instead of creating a whole new thread), how can I have it so that when the mouse hovers over the div tags the background will change from black to white, the border from white to black and the text from white to black? I made a quick Spry menu to show what I mean (I'm not using Spry on the site as it doesn't seem to be showing the white borders as I want them to look) The CSS stylesheet As I said before I'm a beginner with CSS and div tags, but I'm eager to learn more so I can use them comfortably in any future sites I design. Beginner with CSS - Having some trouble and need help!
Hi all, I've been a freelance web designer for a number of years now and have decided to move from tables to CSS and div tags (a little late jumping on the bandwagon but nevertheless!). For the past few days I've been trying to add a simple horizontal menu, but it won't appear correctly for me. In order to get the four cells (I'm using div tags throughout the site) to line up side by side I added float: left; to the CSS stylesheet. That worked fine until I added another spacer div tag (I named the 1px white line above the menu spacer) that I wanted to appear directly below the menu, instead it behind the menu. Here's the site And here's the CSS stylesheet I'm in dire straits over this (though the solution's probably staring me in the face!) and would really appreciate a helping hand! Niall

I'd like to create a drop-down menu but don't know how...
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be having much luck at all with either code. I can format correctly using the latter code but here are some of the problems I'm still having: I want the main menu item (HOME, HISTORY etc.) to stay the same width, but when I hover over it it changes because I changed the width of the drop-down items I can't duplicate the menu for another drop-down list Here The 1st code The 2nd code Something else I tried but I can't remember where I got the code from Sorry if I'm not making a lot of sense here but I really hope someone can help. Thanks caraewilton! I've been working on that code but can't seem to make some changes such as the width of individual cells and chagin the colour blue to black. I'm working with this one as well to see what I can come up with.

I'd like to create a drop-down menu but don't know how...
I have a website I want to add a drop-down menu for. At the moment the site uses a basic menu that only links to a page with sub-menus. Here's the site so you can get a better idea of what I'm trying to say: My Website I'd like to make this into a drop-down menu (like the one here) while retaining the exact appearance it currently has. How can I do that? I've been looking at AllWebMenus PRO but don't really know how customiseable it is (plus, I'd prefer not to pay extra for what could be free ) I was also wondering would Flash be an option and in using Flash am I alienating any users? I've been wanting to make this change for a while now and would really appreciate any advice on moving ahead with it! Niall

Seeking advice on web design
Hi guys, So I decided to go for a more condensed font (Gills San Condensed Bold) here are the results. What do you think?

Seeking advice on web design
Thank you both for the quick and helpful replies along with the warm welcome, I'm starting to feel at home here! As for the site, I'll try a few of the suggestions made and show them to my brother to see what he thinks. The Careers section is simply a page that will allow users to submit their CV (they can attach a file) so I don't really think it would belong under About Us, probably CV though. Another idea might be to use a more condensed font such as Arial Narrow. To go off topic a little, can you tell me what you think of the site overall i.e. the design, accessibility etc.? I'll keep you informed of what happens! Niall

Seeking advice on web design
Hi all, I'm Niall! I'm a Graphic Designer for a local newspaper and I work as a freelance web designer in my spare time. I hope to make webdesignerforum.co.uk a regular stomping ground! A while ago I designed and created a website for my brother: http://www.epd-qs-solutions.com/ He has asked me to add both a 'Gallery' and 'Careers' section. If I were to add those 2 to the menu with the other 4 sections (all on the same row) things may look a little cramped. If I were to seperate everything into 2 rows of 3 then everything might looked too spaced apart, as well as that the site is currently 550px in height and I'm worried that anything more will have a negative effect on users with 800x600 resolution. Can you please advise me on what the best way to go is? Niall
