Want to share your CSS knowledge?
Definitely not - call in sick right now! tee hee. I was lucky last year as I got employed by a company part-time, but they didn't really have any work for me and so I sat there 7 hours every day on quite a decent hourly rate teaching myself CSS for three months. I forever grateful to them for the time and the money. Dave - I had problems with liquid layouts too as I generally always go for fixed width designs, but one day I had to do a liquid layout for a client and found that link and used some of the examples to get a layout that worked - it didn't take too long either.

Reg Cleanup Software
I'm having problems with my PC and tried a free download of regcure and it cames up with tons of errors - but you need to purchase the software before it fixes anything on your PC. It's a very sneaky way to get your money as you download it, try it, and then it doesn't do anything unless you cough up - if you visit their website, you won't find a price mentioned anywhere...sounds dodgy to me - or is it legit? Anyway does anyone know of any decent tools out there to clean up my PC reg entries etc. I don't mind if I have to pay so long as it's something that someone can recomend i.e. you've used it and it worked for you. Any help much appreciated. E

Want to share your CSS knowledge?
Hi there When I first started to code with CSS I had no idea what I was doing and really found it difficult reading the resources online as there are so many ways of doing one thing so initially it's very easy to get confused and wonder whether you are doing things right or not. What I did was find a site that had the kind of layout I needed - eg a 2 column site with a header and a footer and then downloaded the CSS for it and tried to figure out from that how to build my own 2 column layout. Once I go that sorted, I moved onto a 3 column layout and did the same thing by finding a site that looked and functioned the way I wanted mine to and deconstructed it in order to learn how to build my own. It took me ages to feel confident in what I was doing, but I got there in the end. Whenever you see a site you like and you know it's a CSS site - have a look at the source code and find out the link to the stylesheets - then load those in your browser and see how they've gone about building the site - This is the best way to learn. Alternatively you could buy 'Bulletproff Web Desing' by Dan Cederholm as it's brillinat - I bought it a year ago and it really helped iron out some of the problems I was having and has helped me streamline my coding. Here are some links you might find useful: > Simple 2 Column CSS Layout > CSS from the Ground Up > Css Help Pile > CSS Tests and Experiments > Cascading Style Sheets, level 2 CSS2 Specification > Full CSS Property Compatibility Chart > Links that will save you from an anuerism > Css Crib Sheet > Css Selectors > Css Play > Box Model Hack > Raw CSS Examples > A CSS Framework > Liquid CSS Layouts And after all of that you should be a CSS guru! Free Promotion
The more I read the more I think a blog would be a good idea...but maybe not a blog about me personally - I'm thinking of creating a funny quirky dogblog as a humerous rant from my dogs perspective on life - this allows for total creativity and a place to release my offbeat personality, but was going to do it as a conventional website rather than use blogging software as I want it to be horizontally scrolled as that fits with the designs I'm coming up with - if this is possible to do with wordpress then I might give it a go.

thanks for the info - it's nice to at last meet someone [at least only virtually] who knows the ins and outs of SEO!

SPURL - a new way to bookmark stuff.
I know what you mean - I only thought of spurling my own sites recently - how stupid am I!!! I don't know much about the other you mention, but I've noticed a few people linking to my site from del.icio.us so someone must have bookmarked my site there. I will look into that and find out more - thanks for the other links too.

SPURL - a new way to bookmark stuff.
One thing about Spurl is that the site logs all your spurls and you can see other people's latest spurls too. There is an option with each page you spulr to click a checkbox to make that particular spurl private and so it won't get added to the site's new spurls list. I used this feature a lot at the last company I worked for to bookmark test sites and admin/timesheet links that I didn't want to go public so you can hide all those 'embarassing' bookmarks of your - I'm intruiged but maybe I better not go there

Desktop or Laptop
hey my PC has a blue light on it too - but apparently I can chage it to different colours if I press one of the F keys at start up but I've never bothered to do that - I fancy red though so might give it a go.

SPURL - a new way to bookmark stuff.
Hi all I've used Spurl for over a year now and think it's great. I started using to bookmark sites as I was working from home as well as for a company in Edinburgh and I needed to be able to access my bookmarks from anywhere. Spurl allows you to do this - you create an account at www.spurl.net and download it and install it into your browser. Then you can start spurling your favourite sites. Then whereever you are in the world you can login to your spurl account and access all of your bookmarks - it's great also if you use a lot of different browsers as all your 'spurls' are in one place and can be access from any browser. check it out: www.spurl.net

Console or PC Gaming
I still prefer to use a keyboard any day...what are you playing at the moment? I was playing half life 2 until I got stuck on a Boss level and couldn't be bothered with it anymore - I hate boss levels. So I've reverted back to Myst and now trying to solve Myst IV Revelation as I've also just bought Myst V End of ages and can't wait to start playing that too.

Desktop or Laptop
I have a desktop - well I've got two - ones a PC the others a Mac. But I would love a laptop too - so I could sit out in the garden and work, in the summer. I'd also find a laptop useful for when I go to meetings or when I have to commute for specific work...better start saving.

A Poll about Screen Resolutions
As a web designer it's always good to know what screen resolution to design for. I am still designing to allow for 800 x 600, but personally use 1280 x 1024 and have done for a long time. I'm beginning to think that surely the use of 800 x 600 is in decline and maybe I should stop catering for it, but thought I would make a poll to find out what is the most widely used resolution by the folk on this forum.

What browser do you use?
good topic for a poll - I was thinking of starting to use Opera as I've heard it's really good and I need to use it for a current project so I will soon find out more about it.

Buying domain names
I noticed recently that during the most recent uk version of big brother some guy bought up all the domain names of all the people in the house - using their names and I guess he was hoping to make money from them in the future - nice idea but it's bit sneaaky too and I'm not sure I agree with it to be honest.

Useful Dreamweaver Extensions

Hi
That's nice to know - it's a good life, although sometime frustrating when clients think they know more than you and make you compromise your designs in ways that make you forego adding the work to your portfolio - I've had a few of them and it's a nightmare, but then you just charge them extra for the hassle. What kind of work are you doing at the moment? what ar you learning?

Image Editing
I use fireworks for all my web design stuff as it's so easy to use. But if I have to edit an image in detail then I use photoshop but i'm considering downloading the free GIMP software that people have been raving about in a nother thread and giving that a go too.
