September 16, 200619 yr As a web designer it's always good to know what screen resolution to design for. I am still designing to allow for 800 x 600, but personally use 1280 x 1024 and have done for a long time. I'm beginning to think that surely the use of 800 x 600 is in decline and maybe I should stop catering for it, but thought I would make a poll to find out what is the most widely used resolution by the folk on this forum.
September 19, 200619 yr Nice Poll, As a designer it would definately be interesting to see, what people are actually using. I'm a windows user, so i'm using 1280 x 1024 resolution, I use this because I get a good viewable area of what i'm designing. I often switch into 1024 or 800 res, to see how the masthead/upper content renders then adjust accordingly. I think consumers in general are using 1024 x 768 mainly, as looking over the stats on a number of websites it seems over 70% are using this screen size. Is 800 x 600 dying out?
September 19, 200619 yr Author I hope so. I get the impression that 1024 x 768 is a favoured resolution too, but like yourself stick to 1280 x 1024 to design.
September 28, 200619 yr I use 1024 x 768, since I find that a higher resolution is a bit hard on my eyes. I tend to sit a bit too far away from the monitor, and this way I don't have to squint too much. Drives me nuts when designers don't develop sites with "average" resolutions in mind. Those huge wide layouts are blatant giveaways that they haven't tested the site in different resolution environments. And horizontal scrollbars are of the devil! 800x600 seems to be dying out, although it's still seen in something like 20% (at least of my user base). One fifth is still a significant amount of traffic, so I try to make my sites flexible enough to degrade smoothly. Great poll idea!
October 10, 200619 yr So, is 800x600 officially dead? I check my stats for around 8 websites each month, and the 800x600 res decreases each and every time with 75% of the users viewing a 1024 x 768 resolution. Perhaps it's worth designing Fluid/expandable sites, to make sure you do cater for most people? Hmmmmm....
October 10, 200619 yr Author I didn't realise you could check screen resolutions with stats...I don't think I can do that with my web stats. I'm thinking of ditching 800x600 and opting for 1024x768 now. But the fluid layout idea is probably a good option too.
October 23, 200619 yr There was a pretty intense discussion on resolutions (relating to web design) over at SP just the other day. I joined in at the start then dropped out. I use 1280x1024 myself.
October 24, 200619 yr I am 1280x1024. I love it. It is perfect for gaming and such. 1024x768 just seems too small! I used to have my screen on that resolution, but I have upgraded!
October 24, 200619 yr Author I'm really happy with the results of this poll so far as it's proving to me that a lot of people do use 1280 x 1024. But then these results a biased towards designers and people who use computers daily in their work - what about all those people out there we can refer to as "joe bloggs" - people who don't use computers everyday but still visit the websites we build. I bet they're still on 800 x 600!
July 4, 200719 yr Reviving this older discussion to get some more opinions. I almost always design my sites with consideration for 800x600 people, mostly because I think of my non-techy mom who I know is still using that resolution. Anyway, I've recently picked up an old project that will have a very busy, news site-type home page. I think it really needs more than the 760ish pixel width I usually do, and doesn't really translate well to a fluid layout. So... do I ditch the 800x600 people or create my site - slightly uglier and less functional, IMHO - for that minority? Ah, the dilemma!

It tells you screen res, browser, operating system, what time they have tea etc. as well as all the usual numbers. It's dead easy to build into your page and it's free. Richard
July 5, 200719 yr I'll be upgrading to a larger dimension soon, as my PC is broken, will be buying a new one with a flat screen glass screen monitor. Compared to my 19inch Lump I have now lol
