  1. Hi, I am a web designer but previously I have always sorted out separate hosting for each website. However, I want to know what is the stardard practice for hosting your own sites with one provider. E.g. is it a good idea to get one hosting account and use a number of add-on domains for each website? thanks Andy
  2. Hi, I'm doing a quote for a cms, most likely based on a custom wordpress theme. It will include the design concept, coding the design and building the wordpress template, plugins, custom php etc. How much would this sort of project be worth? Thanks Andy
  3. Hi, I've got a page with body, html {width:100%} and then a div inside that: #testimonial {width:100%} I want the testimonial div to stretch the full 100%, but I can't seem to make it happen. What am I missing? Cheers Andy
  4. no offence, but what am I doing wrong to get some responses to my posts? The last few times I posted here, I've had no replies. I've used this forum a lot in the past, to great effect, but recently am I forgetting my manners or something?
  5. Hi, I'd like to get some feedback on this design. Any suggestions would be appreciated. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ride-earth/4164841419/ In particular ideas for the typography in the header and the menu and anything else fresh eyes might spot! Thanks Andy
  6. Hi I'm doing some research into website technology, and I wanted to brainstorm with people what is the archetype of a website in their eyes. Mainly because what a website is, is changing and evolving, as are the technologies. So I'd like to ask people to reply with the first 5-10 (or more) things that define what a website is to you. I'm interested in the first things that come to mind when you think of a website and how you use a website- what you expect from it. Thanks! The aim of my research will be hopefully to create some new archetypal structures and functionality based on website technologies for use in future projects and perhaps public domain release. Also to understand better myself.
  7. Hi, I need to make a site dual language. I've got the translations. I did it once before but it was a very crude method where there were two copies of the website. I imagine a better way is to include the different language content. There must be a pretty standard way of doing this? Thanks Andy
  8. In the end I just used a gif. It was particularly strange. I think the version was IE6. Anyway, it was the version that shipped with visual studio 08.
  9. Hi, I've got a png overlaying another png as a bg image. The first png is aligned next to a normal div. the first png and the div have the exact same colors but they look different in IE. In IE the png image is a lot darker. In firefox, it's a lot less noticeble. Any ideas on fixing this. Cheers Andy
  10. Hi, I'm English but I live in the Republic of Georgia. I helped a friend out here to build a website to help develop a community of mountain bikers here and develop the sport in general as it doesn't really exist much here. Anyhow, I have devoted a fair bit of time to the site, however, there are lots of way it could be developed. There is quite a big audience and I'm looking for someone who might be interested in helping out on a pro bono basis to maintain and develop the website as a community project? Thanks Andy
  11. Hi, I want to create a layout with a header and footer that stretches 100% of the width of the browser even if the user zooms in and out- Exactly like this: http://www.immovarro.be/ (hold down ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel) Thanks Andy
  12. Hi. What is the best system to post a map on a website and indicate a place / places on it. Google maps, wikimapia, openstreetmap? Cheers Andy
  13. Hi, I've been thinking deeply about my career path recently. I love art and design, audio, anything innovative and experimental. I am a reasonable web designer at the moment, and I've got a slowly improving system for research and building websites. I also have a working knowledge of ASP.net and SQL. I'm a reasonable photographer and cameraman also. However, I'm considering going back to uni to study pure design. But I want to study something which if I desire, will allow me to dabble in different creative areas of electronic music composition, design, environmental design, web design, photography, filmmaking and art. These are the things along with mountain biking, expeditions and the outdoors that get's me excited. I'm interested if anyone here studied design or has any other thoughts on what I just said. Cheers in advance Andy
  14. Hi, I've got a standard list inside a header div and I want to display the list horizontally evenly distribute the li elements across the page with the text-centred I know how to do this, but I want to see how others do it, because I can't seem to evenly distribute the li elements across the page easily without manually giving the ul a left margin and padding the li's. Thanks Andy
  15. I met the guy, and it's kind of a country specific portal he wants with a community forum, blog etc. It will be dual language. Anyone familiar with Drupal or similar? Cheers Andy
  16. Hi guys, this is the story so far, just going to meet the chap to get a lot more info obviously. Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on how much something like this would cost to make: "I'm interested in putting together a reasonably simple website with some basic database stuff for a non-profit organization I'm starting to promote OpenStreetMap. Basically I want some simple informational pages, a blog, the ability to register as a member, and then some other things integrated, like a webforum, Wikis, and some windows to display maps from the OSM tile server. Ideally this could all be easily managed with Drupal or some easy to use CMS. I don't know exactly how much effort this would take to put together and my budget is quite tight, but if it's possible to put something together at a reasonable price I'd be interested in using your services. Perhaps you can give me an idea of what something like this would cost and we can talk further?" Cheers Andy
  17. Hi, I want to list my services on some industry forums. Can anyone recommend some. Thanks Andy Welch

  20. Hi, I'm not very familiar with PHP or mysql. I normally use MSSQL and asp.net. But I want to create a small application to store GPS routes so people can upload routes and contribute routes to a list on a website. would people recommend I make something from scratch for this or could I use a content management system like drupal? I guess something like this is what I want to make: http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf Cheers Andy
