Text Editor: Sublime Text 2 FTP: Transmit I use both of these tools everyday. I have tried just about everything out there over the past decade and have narrowed it down to these tools specifically for my day to day workflow. I do occasionally use other text editors for certain circumstances but 90% of the time i am in sublime text. Transmit is hands down the best ftp program i have ever used for any OS. Very functional, very clean interface; works amazing.

I get what you are trying to do and I think it's really cool, it seems like a really fun project. I feel like the "home page" should show content right off the bat instead of having users click through. You can still keep the "console" theme but I really would look into making the display information from the start. You could also probably find some mono-spaced typefaces via typekit or googles web font repository to give more of a classic console feel as well. I think it might be really fun to explore being highly inspired by a classic console interface but take a twist with it and make it modern while incorporating elements that you have already included. Good luck, don't be afraid to keep us updated with future changes, I'm curious to see where this goes.

OOOH, I misunderstood. Sorry about that. Yeah I have about 100 gigs of space on my drop box that I use and I find it plenty. But yeah, you are going to need a completely different solution that what I am using, not too sure what that is! Good luck. I use dropbox in the office and at on a regular basis for my backup's and auto syncs. I work from my dropbox folder a lot so I can have my files available in the office and or at home/on the go. There is also google cloud and a plethora of others which are decent as well. I use dropbox because its affordable and meets the scope of my current needs. If you search for "cloud storage solutions" you should be able to find blogs comparing all the various cloud services out there; which ultimately will help you narrow down exactly what you want/how much you would like to spend/amount of space you need/etc.

I guess everyone here who "face-palmed", "disliked or downvoted" your comment must be wrong. To each his own. Stubbornness and close mindedness are horrible traits to have as a developer. Can you please tell me specifically why I do not get it and why everyone else here who has similar thoughts in this thread "doesn't get it". I would like to be enlightened, so I can learn and better expand my skill-set. I am truly not intending to be rude, I just think that before you steer someone who wants to learn a language in any particular direction that you should give more information as to why you recommend something other than: "why not work less at becoming a guru of pure javascript and more on becoming a guru of jquery, jquery to me is what everyone should be using now days". Again sorry if I am coming across as rude, wasn't my original intention.

I think there is a little too much movement and animation, specifically with the drop down menu and with the hovering on the images below the menu. The color change, moving text and zooming picture is a little too much, I would choose one of those effects. Also keep in mind that stationary objects are not always a bad thing. As mentioned above it feels a little bit cluttered. I think the cookies disabled message is very intrusive, it makes me want to leave the site. I think as far as a foundation, you have a great place to work and improve from. You are off to a a pretty good start though!

I do get it but apparently you don't. No one become a "guru" of a language without understanding its underlying components. Simply learning a library gives you an amazing foundation in that library with a little knowledge here and there. In the real world this is not practical by any means. Where as becoming a full fledged JS developer gives you the ability to work with other libraries and learn the intricacies of that language to actually APPRECIATE and understand why jQuery is so powerful and useful. Also cashing all of your chips in with the thinking that jQuery will only grow is ridiculous, who knows what will be available 3 years down the road for us to use, you have to be open minded. I love jQuery and use it regularly, every day to be exact so do not think I am hating on it, I absolutely love it; I just do not agree with your statement at all.

Please do not do this. jQuery is an absolutely great library but nothing will beat having a very firm understanding and grasp of JS. Learn JS and everything else will fall into place. JS has been around since 95 I think, jQuery is fairly new and as with anything new some things become fads and others replaced on a regular basis by something new and better. I am not saying jQuery will become obsolete anytime soon, or if ever; it is no secret that jQuery has greatly improved upon the downfalls of JS, but it is good to keep in mind that it is important to learn the foundation of a language and build upon it from there. There is nothing saying you can't learn both together as well. Regardless of what direction you take, good luck!

sometimes I read css-tricks, sitepoint, designerstalk and the dev-shed's forums. I don't I don't have accounts on them but they do have some pretty knowledgable people and there is good information to be found there. I found this community to be the best overall and probably my most favorite.

I am trying to incorporate head.js into my current project. It works fine except for the fact that hidden elements flicker when the page loads. I realize this is due to the fact that the scripts are loaded in parallel with one another then executed at the same time. I was wondering if there was a work around for this that was functional and wouldn't put me at risk for other unforeseen errors down the road. Are there better loaders out there? From what I read head.js is fairly regarded as one of the better ones with a pretty good reputation but I am all ears for suggestions. Thanks!

This is not a bad idea. Just make sure you do not dig yourself into a hole. Be friendly, courteous and always respectful. I've been in this spot once before and it was a massive headache. Just don't dig yourself into a hole by being rude and letting your emotions get the best of you; though it is tough.

I am going to check out the provided link after I get out of the office. I was unaware about the issue with hash values. I am nearing the end stages of a massive-retail project that I have been working on, might be worth going back and optimizing a bit in my down time; really wouldn't take too long to do. In all honesty I really do not use ID's too often but I am always looking to improve my abilities. You are totally right about style control when concerning ID's gets annoying at times. Hmmmm, thanks to both of you it honestly never occurred to me to "keep it classy" . Thanks again!

Most likely. I have never used photodune but here is there license policies: http://photodune.net/licenses/photo. It seems that they really don't want you to resell any image that was obtained from their website. You may want someone else to look over that for you just to be on the safe side. I am sure someone on this forum might be able to back up this information/correct me if I am wrong. I generally use istockphoto, they are fairly expensive, but they have clear cut rules about their licensing agreements. With them extended license's generally are based on impressions. There is usually a threshold where you will need to buy the extended license. It's possible your best bet would be to contact someone at photodune and ask them directly. They may be able to break it down into laymen's terms for you. If you have some time on your hands many of the images on www.sxc.hu are license free, though some of the images are not of the greatest quality. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Depends on the website/what the photographer is licensing those photos as. Generally most stock websites will tell you the type of license that the image holds with a description of what fair use of that image may include. There are a few stock websites who give you free reign to use their photos commercially or privately. Some others will allow you to freely use their photos for personal use but require a fee to use their images commercially. If you pass along a link to a couple of the photos you have purchased I may be able to help you out a bit more.

I personally use ID's for things such as specific/unique containers or elements that I know I will only be calling once, or as mentioned above that I want to be able to easily target with javascript. It's not necessarily bad workmanship to primarily use classes, it is just not my personal preference; we all have our own coding styles. With a little planning and foresight it is easy to figure out where you would want to use and ID over a class and vice versa. You are ahead of the game just by knowing that there is a difference between ID's and classes, so cheers to you for that! Do you mind explaining a few? Maybe you can give me some insight to a new perspective I have not thought about before and possibly improve my methods. If you do not have that time, that is totally understandable.

Weird, this is working across all browsers for me on OSX. It looks like the code is ok as well. I'll try testing it on my PC later and see if it doesn't work there.

nice job with the updates! The initial image looks much better and the slider navigation control is much easier to see. I did just notice a *bug* I think. The right(forward) arrow on the slider control moves the images backwards while the left (backward) arrow moves the images forward. Maybe this is working as intended, not too sure, just wanted to point it out in case. Anyways, great job and good luck!

The navigation to scroll from left to right is non-intuitive as far as placement goes. It took a minute or two to figure out how to actually browse the website. Since it hugs the right side of the browser window it kinda disappeared into the page, about 500 pixels away from the content you were displaying. I am using a 27inch imac and the browser window is far from being full screen. I would recommend playing around with that and making it a little more visible. I don't know if that means adjusting color to bring more attention to the buttons, labeling them with text such as previous and next or adjusting screen position/what they are attached to. You have to take into account different resolutions and platforms which your site is going to be viewed on. The idea is pretty cool and it functions fine, just need to play with it a bit to perfect it. Other than that you are off to a good start. Keep up the good work. P.S. You have created some pretty nice pieces, good job!

Sublime Text 2. It is my absolute favorite text editor. There is an unlimited free trial available for it but I paid for it regardless because of how nice it is (pretty cheap). There are also a ton of user created plugins which add a ton of functionality to the program. Great syntax highlighting for pretty much any language you can think of. Also themes! Never a bad thing to have different color themes for different lighting situations where you are working. There are really a bunch of features and its worth checking out especially if you are verbose in any given language and do not need the extra help from a WYSIWYG. Hope this helps! Enjoy

I like the second to last version that you had posted. Where there was more spacing between the letters but not quite so large. Very simple and clean logo. Job well done.

I think your website has a ton of promise! It is really easy on the eyes and flows pretty well. My one suggestion is to improve your load times. Not sure if you have done it, but possibly saving images in photoshop for web will help you substantially lower image size while maintaining quality resulting in much faster load times. Other than that, like mentioned above, tidying up your copy a bit will also help. You are onto something great! Keep up the good work and keep us posted with future updates.

http://www.email-standards.org/ is another decent resource to check out as far as e-mail campaigns go. They gives a lot of advice to help you make your html and image based emails display correctly and consistently across a large variety of e-mail services. Hope this helps a bit!

I do not have the time right to fully look into what is causing the accordion to automatically expand to the height of the largest UL, but there is a simple temporary fix. You can take the ID of each UL and create a style with a specified height to display the content with no white space below the last entry. Again this is only a temporary fix and isn't ideal but it will work for the time being. For Example: #recent { height: 250px; } #popular { height: 100px; } & etc. Ooops I just realized this was posted back in April. I'll submit the post just incase you haven't figured this out.
