  1. A simple 2 or 3-col layout, header image, maybe some background image shouldn't take long. If the client supplies the content, most of the extra pages will just be a case of copying the file, then cut'n'pasting the content into place.
  2. Odd that it would suddenly start doing that for no reason. You haven't made any changes on your system? If you can connect with a seperate FTP client, the issue is probably to do with DW or anything that might block DW. Installing a firewall (or any security software that can block connections), or DNS caching software could be a culprit, or it could be DW's site settings getting messed up. Double check those, maybe try setting up another entry in the site manager for that site and testing that?
  3. You can edit the CSS and graphic files.
  4. So put a date on it too... /09-08/latest-news or whatever
  5. It looks like a dynamic site, no? There's a newsfeed from the BBC on it.. My guess would be that they're using a CMS (hence dynamic content), and just have the url output set to that particular format (page-1,page-2 etc). Most CMSs have the option to use different URLs, including using the title of a post (eg, /latest-news ), whichis much more SEO friendly. If it doesn't, then you may be able to do it yourself using mod_rewrite, but it'd probably be a bugger to integrate that into an existing system. Using the url format that they have is 'acceptable' in that there is no technical reason not to, but it'd be much more SEO friendly to have the post title in the url.
  6. You could just stick them all in one password protected folder. You can set up pass protection for folders from your hosting control panel.
  7. sitemap protocol If you're using a CMS, you can probably get a plugin that will generate a sitemap automatically.
  8. It's the CMS that uses the database and puts all the content in it, so it should already be installed. There's a URL to log into the CMS (eg, for the wordpress CMS it'd be http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin ). That'd be a lot easier than editing the database manually. If you can post the site address, we may be able to tell what CMS is being used, and from there get the login url.
  9. It would be better to have actual page names. Search engines take the url into account when seeing how relevant a page is to the search terms.
  10. What, like the big blue circle things? Seriously, I wouldn't bother.. It's not the kind of site that needs effects. The information is the most important thing.
  11. I'm getting a page not found
  12. I'm not an SEO expert, but it seems that back links and site age are biggies. Your site age is ok, but without any backlinks, Google is going to assume that people aren't linking to it because it's no good. Hence the low PR.
  13. Sounds like he's using a CMS, so the actual content is likely stored in a database, not in the actual files themselves. The php files contain instructions to pull the content from the database and display it, but don't actually contain the content themselves. If that's the case, you'd have to log into the CMS and edit the content that way. Which could be difficult if you can't find the password and username... Worst case, if you can get to the database (should be able to administer to the database through the hosting control panel) then you could add a new user and password.
  14. How about giving the fixed position div a top and bottom margin the same as the longer div?
  15. Metatag Generator
  16. Good call. Bid sites place way too much emphasis on price comparisons to the point where they almost encourage shoddy work.. and if the person providing work is in another country, you're kinda screwed if it all goes wrong. However, if you get the patent and the idea is as good as it sounds, what about a business loan? Thing is, if you do go ahead on your own and just kinda wing it, you're putting your site out there in a state where it would probably be relatively easy to improve upon. Unless your patent is watertight, what's to stop someone else doing that and offering an improved version of your site? It strikes me that if you have a genuinely new idea, you have 2 options.. 1) build your brand - make sure your name is the one associated with this new idea of yours. That would probably mean a lot of promotional material and conastant improvement, which in turn requires a high budget. 2) Don't release the site, but sell the idea on to a company that can develop and promote it properly. You could settle for a lump sum, royalties or some combination of the 2. A franchise scheme of some sort may work too.
  17. It's nice and simple, but possibly a bit too simple? I think there needs to be some element of 'wow' to a designer's site. It needs to be a showcase.. not just in the sense of having a portfolio, but in how it's presented. I don't mean add a load of fancy stuff, 'cos simple can work just as well, but there still needs to be something that makes it stand out, and I don't think this has that yet. Also, the lettering for the name.. it's an organic looking font, but why not actually do it by hand and scan it? It'd add a bit of personality.
  18. Those circly things in the background have now gone on my list of Stuff That Makes Me Boycott A Site. Along with swirly things and reflected logos.
  19. Can you give the bottom link a seperate class with a different background specified? Or am I misunderstanding what's needed?
  20. If you're a beginner, that's really throwing yourself in at the deep end. Even if you got the fixtures and results and stuff to show, are you going to be able to manage securing everything so that people don't mind making bets with you? I'd be pretty pissed off if I won a bet and then found that someone had hacked in and stolen all my credit card info... Anyway, back to the results and that.. I don't think there'd be any way to integrate that into a site without a bit of scripting. Unless there's a specialist service available, you'd probably have to find a similar feed too hook into, run it through a server side script to strip out any extra info and then display it in whatever format you require.
  21. Change the z-order of your links so they're higher than the wrapper?
  22. Direct payments are good, but I'd use a different account to your own personal one (it just gets messy otherwise). Might be worth your while looking into getting a business account if you're going to be doingthis kind of thing regularly
  23. I think there was some discussion on this site a while back and that the average was around £25/hr. As for the time estimation, there's so many other variables that any answers would be meaningless. A 3 page site could take an hour to code, for a static site with content and design supplied, or it could take a lot longer if it were a dynamic site that were being developed from scratch including all the design work. Without knowing the details of the jobs, it's impossible to say.
