How many hours, on average would it take to make:

1) 1-3 Pages website

2) 4-6 Pages website

3) 7-12 Pages website

4) ecommerce website

 

Because im trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to pay a freelancer per job. Or employ a designer and pay by the hour.

 

Btw what do you think of £12.50 per hour?

I think if you can find a competent (let alone good!) freelancer that will work for £12.50 per hour I would be hugely grateful for an introduction to them!!! I would be very pleased to give them a massive pile of work :-)

 

In fact I could push the boat out and call it a whopping £13.00 per hour and still be making a big saving on my current costs.

Be aware that you always get what you pay for! If you are paying £12.50 an hour I wouldn't like to think what the site would turn out to be. If you are looking for a competent, quality designer you are easily talking £30 +.

I think there was some discussion on this site a while back and that the average was around £25/hr.

 

As for the time estimation, there's so many other variables that any answers would be meaningless. A 3 page site could take an hour to code, for a static site with content and design supplied, or it could take a lot longer if it were a dynamic site that were being developed from scratch including all the design work. Without knowing the details of the jobs, it's impossible to say.

I have a number of clients that, as well as initial design, then use me on an ongoing basis to do all their maintenance and updates. With this in mind I introduced a couple of packages, which included their hosting plus X number of hours per months work for a monthly fee, and then work over and above the included hours at a rate that drops lower, the higher the package that they take (does that make sense?). So for someoe who's not taken any "included" maintenance I usually charge £25 but if they are on the highest currently available package that drops to £15.

Are we talking about the same "process" ? Like ... hmm ... slicing, html, css (maybe some javascript) and 3 pages ?

A simple 2 or 3-col layout, header image, maybe some background image shouldn't take long. If the client supplies the content, most of the extra pages will just be a case of copying the file, then cut'n'pasting the content into place.

I don't think alot of people would get out of bed for £12.50 an hour nowadays. I only design / code in my spare time but I would charge a minimum of £25 as an hourly rate. If it is someones bread and butter then I guess closer to £50 per hour?

 

And as mentioned above, every site is different, depending on desgin so estimates are hard without a plan
