  1. Newbie question: eregi() to preg_match()

    OK ignore the above, let's make this simpler I just need to update the following two to preg_match() eregi("\n", $s) eregi("%0a", $s) General rule is to add delimiters and a trailing 'i', like so.. preg_match("/\r/i", $s) preg_match("/%0a/i", $s) But in addition to this, do escapes (how many?) also need to be added before the \r and %0a?
  2. Hi all. I'm not a PHP person so please bear with me. I need to remove eregi() and replace it with preg_match(). The line that needs updating is: return (eregi("\r", $s) || eregi("\n", $s) || eregi("%0a", $s) || eregi("%0d", $s)) ? TRUE : FALSE; Would the following be correct and achieve the same as the above? return (preg_match("/\r/i", $s) || preg_match("/\n/i", $s) || preg_match("/%0a/i", $s) || preg_match("/%0d/i", $s)) ? TRUE : FALSE; As you can see, I've just added delimiters and a trailing 'i', but I'm not sure whether I need to escape anything, bearing in mind it's using double quotes. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
  3. Any CMS for static websites?

    I can recommend Unify which is great if your site is already built (or integrated with something else) and you just need to bolt on some basic CMS functionality. No mySQL database needed. I like this one because it lets your client create repeatable regions easily. You just create the block of html that you want repeated (e.g. one containing an image, heading and description) and your clients can easily create new blocks based on this.

    That's good to hear. I keep meaning to move to that from WP to ExpressionEngine. As always though… time! When I had a regular reseller account years ago, the blacklisted IP problem that I mentioned (which gave my clients problems sending mail for 10 days, on two occasions) was actually caused by someone outside of my reseller account. Since then I have assumed that non-VPS reseller accounts are not worth the risk if you're sharing an IP and something like that can occur out of the blue.
  5. I have no problem revealing my hourly rate if asked, although like BlueDreamer it varies according to the particular type of work. Typically for grunt work I'll charge a lower rate than for high end design. Also depends on the amount of work I'm offered - I sometimes lower the rate if a client wants me to do a large job, but then I'm usually getting into price-per-job territory.

    Ah k thanks. Is that the reseller account ie. non VPS? If so, have you not had any problems with malicious scripts or hacks elsewhere on the server impacting you and your clients?

    Further to my last post, I now see the difference. It's so long since I changed from reseller to VPS, I'd forgotten the distinction between the labels. I had a terrible time with the reseller account years ago. The IP kept getting blacklisted by other server accounts which meant my clients couldn't send email. That was what prompted the move to a VPS. I suppose what I am really looking for is what doesn't exist - a fully managed VPS with end user support. (Perhaps I should just look for someone to offload my hosting clients to? )

    It's already a reseller account, or at least, WHM on a managed VPS. (Probably revealing my cluelessness by saying that.) I have never heard of end user support from a reseller supplier before but then I've not looked around too closely for years. Sounds like it could be a suitable option as long as it's not ridiculously expensive.

    2-3 minutes is impressive. Do you mind me asking who your hosting company is? And more than a year since your last hosting issue? I'm guessing you're quite up-to-speed on the technical side of it (or you have easier clients than me!)
  10. Hi folks. Not been on in a while. I have a question for all you web designers who host your client websites: Do you ever wonder whether it's worth the hassle? I've been reseller hosting for a while now. A managed VPS with a couple of dozen client accounts. That might seem small by some standards but it's recurring income and it's been helpful. Yet I'm starting to wonder whether it's really worth it in terms of the stress and time. I suppose this is one of those 'is it just me?' questions, so here's my feeling about it. Much of the problem I think is the knowledge deficit. I try to get up to speed with what I need to, but I am never quite sure what that level is. I am not an expert in hosting, I am a front end designer who runs his own business. With everything from SEO to Adwords to print production to Wordpress to ecommerce to RWD to day-to-day business stuff - and trying to be sh1t hot in as many of those things as possible - I simply don't have the hours in the day to become acquainted with every last option in WHM or to know how to command line my way into tasks. And frankly I don't feel comfortable with the risk and the implications of getting it wrong. As someone offering hosting, sometimes that makes me feel… well, if not a fraud, then at the very least, out of my depth. Sure the VPS is managed, and by a good reputable company, so that helps. Support is good. But obviously it's not instant and I'm often wary of sounding like an out-of-his-depth amateur to the support guys too, so I try not to ask how to do things that they might think Every Reseller Should Know How To Do. You know those heart-pounding, stomach-churning moments when the server goes down or there's some network problem and you know that you're very quickly going to be speaking on the phone to clients before having the faintest clue what the cause of the problem is or whether you're even capable of fixing it in a timely manner? Those moments really suck. Maybe it's your lack of knowledge that has mucked something up, maybe it isn't. Who knows. That's when I start to question whether it's all worth it (the hosting and occasionally the big metaphysical question too ) Added to the stress, there's the time it takes to deal with the stuff - sometimes even things that turn out to be minor or mistakes on the clients' side can take a while and involve having to google endlessly. E.g. A client rings up saying they're having email problems. So you ask them a few questions and do all the obvious stuff - are they definitely on the internet? Can they receive mail? Send mail? What is the error message? Is anyone else in the office having the same problem? While they're saying this, you check they haven't exceeded their disk space or bandwidth quota, check their IP hasn't been blocked by your server firewall, check mail delivery reports and mail queue manager, you ask for their IP and get a traceroute done, perhaps their office IP has suddenly been put onto a policy block list? Is it an SMTP authentication error? They go into their Mail settings and start reading out what port is showing and which authentication details are listed and ask how to do this or that. You have Apple Mail and iOS Mail but you can't talk them through Android or Lotus Notes without googling so again you're struggling. Email problems always seem to take time to diagnose and often I find it's a cause I'm unfamiliar with and another new learning experience. Let's try to ignore the stream of csf/lfd login failure daemon emails that pour into one of my inboxes that seem to arrive in greater and greater quantities making me wonder whether these blocked login attempts are normal or whether there's some security issue I've not tightened up... Then there's the joy of hosting Wordpress... I don't know. The downtime, the endless phone support, feeling like I'm never sufficiently up-to-speed. Maybe this is more about my own limitations, but is it normal to find all this stuff stressful and time-consuming and possibly -- here's the point -- not worth the hassle? Sorry that was a bit of an essay. Think I've been needing to get some of this off my chest!

    Yeah I've heard the same thing from a number of other people who've used them. Part of the 123-reg group, which completely puts me off using them. As for GoDaddy... let's just say, if Chuck Norris owned domain companies...

    Here's what Google themselves have to say: .com, .org, .gov, .ponies—does my top-level domain impact my site's performance in search? Google's goal is to return the best and most relevant results to the user, regardless of the top-level domain. If our system determines that the best result is a page on a new gTLD, we'll return that page in search results. (Sorry, seems I haven't made enough posts here to be able to add a link, but it's on their Webmaster FAQ.)
  14. Been a while since i used it, but I recall I had a deeply infuriating time with TinyMCE Advanced - adding and stripping tags and inserting unwanted gaps or closing up required ones. In the end, I deactivated the plugin. Fortunately I only really needed it for the custom classes, so I edited functions. php and added this myself (and turned off WP's auto-correction). Also, just referring back to my notes, I had 'WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically' turned off, though I'm not sure how relevant that is.

    Thanks - some nice ones there. (Burton is pretty nifty) I looked at jShop a long time ago. Quite comprehensive as I remember. Think the dark depressing and dated website put me off in the end :-/
