Hi everyone, Hope you can help and advise me. My site uses an external provider for the shopping cart, so when a customer adds items to the cart they are taken to another domain, when they then click continue shopping or back they come back onto my site. This does however mean that there are absolutely thousands of external links on my site to the cart providers website. My site used to be PR7 but in the last 2 years has slipped to a meagre PR4, I was advised to add rel="nofollow" links to all the cart links - after all Google will not find any content on those pages - but I am worried by adding that many nofollows to my site I may be penalised for PR sculpting - does anyone have any experience or advice on this issue - what would you do? Hi, I use Firefox to check the validation on my pages, when I get things right I look for the nice green tick! My site Blank dvd r disc and case products for duplication and replication. DVD R media up until last week was getting all the nice green ticks - just noticed I am now getting a little grey circle instead which when you hover over it says "not in domain list" - should I be worried about this and is there a way to fix it??

Hi, Just coded the following page in CSS but getting warnings when testing the specific errors are - <img> discarding newline in URI reference I can see that this is caused by a RETURN or newline in the code - the page is dynamically generated - here is the section that shows the error - </form></td></tr><tr align='center' valign='middle'> <td align='center'><img src='products/canon _s.gif' alt='Canon'> </td> So at the end of line 2 you can see the URL is broken over to the newline .... here is the chunk of code that is producing same - $strTable = $strTable . "<tr align='center' valign='middle'>\n"."<td align='center'>$strManufacturerNameLogo</td>\n"."<td align='center' valign='middle'>".($strManufacturerName)." " . $strProductType . "</td>\n"."<td align='left' valign='middle'>"; Can anyone tell me why this is causing the warnings that I am getting please. Do you guys actually think PR has anything to do with SEO any more. IMHO it is just a thing to distract webmasters and keep them excited and chatting about all things Google - its the greatest marketing tool Google ever came up with. Yes in the early days it used to have some significance but how do you explain this then.. One of my sites has just had its pagerank cut from 5 to 3 but its seo results are now better, and one of the terms we optomise for which is DVD CASES and its associated page http://www.domain.com/dvd-cases.htm this page now comes up as No.1 on Google so how come PR has anything to do with it???

Hi Everyone, Just joined your forum as I am doing some research and looks like you have the experts on here that could solve my problem. I am a web designer and up until now included very little video content on my sites. However a client has come to me wanting 30 second to 1 minute videos produced reviewing products and demonstrating how to use them. I need to know the following to avoid mistakes please - What is the best camcorder to get to make this an easy process. What format should I be recording in. What is the best output for cross browser compatibility? What is the easiest software to use to produce and edit the video ready for inclusion on the website. Any other considerations that I should be looking at? Basically we need to film in the office - good light conditions and then get these clips edited and onto the website as quickly and easily as possible but not burn tons of bandwidth and also future proof the content we produce... Hi, Hope someone can help me achieve the following. I have my dynamically generated pages using php - for example: www.dvd-and-media.com/cartridges_purchase.php?Model=HP+Photo+Smart+P1115 And then I have written a piece of code to get the following, basically it replaces the 'cartridges_purchase.php?Model=' with 'Inkjet-Cartridges-' then it replaces the '+' signs in the rest of the URL with '-' and adds a html extension - so I then end up with the following URL www.dvd-and-media.com/Inkjet-Cartridges-HP-Photo-Smart-P1115.html However what I need to do is have google find the .html pages instead of the php ones and serve up the html ones when the users click though to my ink products. I presume I need some sort of mod rewrite and 301 redirects to the static html pages so that the search engines pick the html files - please help.

Is google doing its dance at the moment? Anyone seeing drastic changes in results?

OK, As I understand things when a spider hits your site it assigns a LEVEL to pages in the site - i.e. those in the root of the site are level one and those in a sub directory would be level 2 etc... My questions concern the addition of new pages to an established website. Currently I am waiting for Google to re-index my site (I expect this around 17th December based on the last few month history) and since the last visit I have added a great deal of content and stuck these pages in the root of the site with links from my index page. How quickly do these pages gain some search engine position (I mean good position)??

There must be an acceptable level of broken links as you have no control if an extrenal site you are linking too is down... So I suppose the up to 2% may be acceptable, but I would imagine it is alot lower than that say 0.5%

As long as you post on topic specific forums related to your industry and then choose threads that relate to a particular product - i.e. make sure you arent doing it on forums totally unrelated to your site.

Don't try and get too clever.... just try and think has someone tried this before - and the answer will normally be yes. What you need to work on is your keyword density on the page - you need to get the correct number of words on the page firstly, say between 300 and 900 then you need the density of the keywords you are targeting to be correct. Then you need lots of quality inbound links with the keywords as anchor text. Thinks about how you can start a viral marketing campaign that mean people will want to add a link on their website to your specific page. Forget about trying to fiddle around with keywords in image alt tags - if it is an image of a 1987 red BMW coupe then that is what your alt text should be - things like google image search are becoming more important for visitor numbers so name the image correctly with the correct alt text and that will bring in more traffic in itself. Just keep adding more good quality content.

Hi, Can someone please tell me which head tags are ignored by google, I have been told Google ignores the Keywords tag by a couple of people and then I get told that it does have some sway??? Anyone clarify this... Also do you know if there is an optimum number of words to have on your page? I know keyword density within that text will be the factor that contributes to your position (amoung a miriad of other factors) but is there a correct number of words like a range - say 500 - 700 words?? And when there are too many words.

So are you saying that I should just have the sitemap linked from the robots.txt file? Also what should I budget for getting my site converted to a CSS based site? I presume I just need someone to set up a template and work from that right?

Does having a few broken links in a site cause you to be excluded from certain search engines? I recently got a copy of Xenu and checked my site and found 50 odd broken links out of my several thousand pages. These broken links included the following - Outbound links to sites that have since dissapeared and gave 404 page not founds Mistyped internal links again giving 404's Some .jpg and .gif images which were missing Some 12029 no connection errors to external sites I am now working my way though correcting these, however the question remains that is there a percentage of links in your site which are broken that is acceptable (like 0.05% for example) or are there some of the search engines and directories that will exclude you for having one single broken link???

Unfortunately it has grown and grown and its a bit like chinese whispers - I have run the link checker in Dreamweaver and found hundreds of broken links - is there an easy way to fix or delete all these or do you have to go through page by page and rectify them?

Hi, I just joined your nice looking forum. My name is Simon and I run the website www.dvd-and-media.com - I have had this site for 7 years now and it has been through alot of ups and downs. We do quite well in the search engines, particularly Google but we suffer a bit because we are a UK company with a .com domain - never realised this would cause us problems when we bought it back then.... mind you in hindsight I should have realised that Americans think they invented the internet (which they did not) and that they claim .com as their own and nobody else should use them! Anyway, my site is hosted in the UK but we still get loads of USA traffic. My question is this - I want to improve the conversion rates of people hitting my site, we have a load of targeted traffic and thats not the problem... as a rule prices are good so it must be in the functionality of the site where we are losing visitors - can you guys and girls please have a quick look at my site and give me your first impressions as if you were a potential buyer and let me know what you consider the weaknesses are please. Don't worry about being harsh - I can take and appreciate the criticism. All help much appreciated.

Hi, My name is Simon and I have just joined your site. The question I have is this, a friend of mine says that my links based menu on my site just has too many links in it and is therefore causing my keyword links to become diluted - is this right and would I be better off having a javascript menu? If so what are the disadvantages of javascript and do I have to add noscript as well if I do that? Hope you can help, all help greatfully received.
