mm yes they do but there are a few perks to the online solution, like distance calculation, google maps api integration etc. It's less than a penny a query so if the client can stand paying for the credits.... Otherwise I can see myself driving down to london with some old pentium and a nokia and a datacable... nice bike btw )

Tricky one, I need to set up an sms messaging server on a linux server, so that users are alerted by sms whenever a new job comes in that they may like to bid upon, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure how this would work - the site is hosted in the states, surely it would need a data cable and a mobile connected to a uk based server, hmm? Also, and this is the tricky part, would it be possible to only send an sms when a job comes up in the postcodes you have specified? Is there postcode software that would integrate with this?

hmm, the brief is a little vague so far. The site currently has the option for a user to pay to give a quote, or receive one. The client would like to introduce a membership system whereby you can have individual memebership, or company membership, the individual requests a quote, the company provides one I am assuming. And different tiers within that, though I'm not clear yet as to what extra functionality a gold subscriber will have as compared to a bronze member for example. This software looks fairly capable though, the kind of thing I am looking for, do you think?

I have a customer who needs a paypal integrated membership system with tiers, bronze, gold, silver. Their current site is in PHP, can anyone recommend a good system on a budget?

I've been messing with this - one of my problems has always been that I'm stone colourblind, so I tend to work in shades, could anyone suggest a nice palette? Or any creative critique, though there's not much to see at the moment.

for a shopping cart Cubecart seems very good from all I have read, with zencart seeming to be in 2nd place, it works with nice css and layouts and has all the payment gateway intefaces built in. I bought a copy and have designed a couple of skins for it, all quite simple and easy to work with. Re:learning php vs using wordpress, I just recently put wordpress on 2lb.co.uk and I'm quite pleased with it, you can tweak to your heart's content and just strip out whole sections if you so desire, it will help you get started with php, tweaking an off the shelf cms too. I agree that joomla and mambo, phpnuke etc are a nightmare to work with in my limited experience... hth

I've been out of the game for a year or so, and I've been brushing up my skills for a little while. My question is, where do you guys advertise, how do you get your freelancing done, what works? I've worked as designer, snr designer, contractor, even web manager once for a while, however I placed an ad in the local paper recently as a freelancer and had 0 response. I've tried placing my own ad on a freelancer directory and had replies from hundreds of designers, literally, ranging from smug £70 an hour ' i don't really need your business' types to 'will code for food'ers. So it seems these things are oversubscribed...

I haven't actually Eskymo it's probably because both book and illustrations are out of copyright due to being published prior to 1923. That was my reason for choosing it for a starting point for a play with some code anyway. I can smell a punchline here ooyes... Transitional is slightly more lenient than strict about well-formedness in the markup I think.

For you, Badmotherz, just for you.. Ok, it's Georgia, that's a nice browser safe font anyway, and I've increased the line-height slightly. What to you think about this cover page, it's giving me a headache; how would I separate out the h1? Pesky thing. I'd like to keep the layout the same(ish)..
