I'm toying with the idea of buying a chrome book and I was just wondering if anyone has had much success doing all their web design work online.
 
I have a desktop, so this would just to enable me to code or design whilst watching tv downstairs.
 
Think there are online FTP things, but just wondering if people have managed without files or with just using various apps.
 
Any ideas for useful apps gratefully appreciated.

It was a Windows Update that was messing everything up...

Looks like something's triggering a bug with ClearType.

If paying by credit/debit card customers can pay in any currency, your payment gateway and their card company will handle exchange rates etc.
 
If you are trading internationally it's a good idea to offer a choice of currencies that your customers can pay in. Many cart systems have the ability to use multiple currencies and let visitors browse and pay in the currency of their choice. For selling to the UK and US I'd suggest offering USD, GBP, EURO and of course your local currency and anothers that may be applicable.

The href is what gets lightboxed, the img src is the link.

There are 3 validation errors that could potentially affect your layout - worth fixing in my opinion

have you tried "initial-scale=1"?

what's going wrong with it? If I use safari on a PC and resize my browser window down there is no horizontal scrollbar appearing. Would this be messing up an ipad?

If you remove the z-index from:

Then increase the z-index on #ribbon to 1 it should display properly.
 
Forgot to say you can probably also remove the positioning on the pagewrap and morebutton as well.
 
I always try to avoid negative z-inexes unles you really have to push things backward because it isnt really necessary. If you think of a site in layers you work from the bottom and build up.

http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_abbr.asp just use the abbr tag if you have any abbreviations on your site

I did an assessment once - a 1hr one and it was mainly about how i could improve a specific webpage they gave me to look at. Also i was asked about browser modes(standards mode, quirks mode and nearly standards mode) and how they affect the webpage.
 
So that one thing you could look into. But most importantly is trusting your own judgement on certain things. If you fail then ask why?

I can only echo notbanksy's comments.
Chances are you will be interviewed by somebody who hasn't got a clue what you're talking about.
They might present you with a couple of sample web pages (is there a template for these?) and ask you to tell them what you think is wrong with them (really obvious stuff like 'the menu is covering the slideshow' or 'that image is overlapping the footer'.
 
My advice would be , (corny as it sounds), be true to yourself and your knowledge.
Don't say you can do something when you can't.
Try and keep the conversation to things you do know about.
Admit your failings (stuff you're not sure of) but are keen to learn.
 
A few years back, I had an interview for a web dev role. They asked me if I could create a 'calculator' script to do with personal loans. I replied with 'PHP or JavaScript?'
They couldn't answer...
 
I got the job and left three days later because they were sh1te...
 
Just relax and take it in your stride; you've made it this far, they must like you

I was asked to an assessment appointment for my first web dev design job, and this is what happened.
 
First I was asked to assess two web pages in terms of design and code, and explain what I thought could be done to improve them, and how I'd approach this. This was just HTML & CSS.
 
The I was asked to explain what process I'd take in the design & code of a site from scratch. I talked about discussing the project with the client, understanding their needs, and making recommendations before starting the project to make sure we both agreed on the scope. I also talked about the importance of usability and accessibility.
 
Finally, I was asked about my coding experience and CMS implementation. Being something of relative newcomer to php I was honest about what I could and couldn't do.
 
It wasn't as stressful as I thought it may have been, and I got the job.
 
Remember, they'll be assessing your character and how they think you might fit in with their team as well as your technical capabilities.

Quick design alterations I would make:
 
• Top right nav <a> color -> #FFF
• "Desperate Houses [this text]" colour -> lighter yellow.
• The "Read more +" buttons are slightly odd, shading on the top is confusing.
 
Actually won't list them, just take a look at your contrast in general. Your colour scheme is friendly and distinctive, just not implemented very well.
 
Also
http://desperatehouses.co.uk/news/category/child-care - your heading id has crazy characters in it, so it isn't being selected, take a look at the template for that one, could be char enc.
 
Just a tiny (tiny) point, the hover state for the top right navigation is on the <li>, instead of the <a>, and your <li> is bigger than the <a>, leaves a deadzone of about 6px under the links.

I am now starting to take on more and more freelance work and because of this i am gonna take the plunge and start my own company come August. My old work mate is going to team up with me and we discussed pricing the other day.
 
I always found it hard to set myself a decent pricing structure but now i know how long websites take me to complete, i can charge either by the hour or by the day instead of a rough estimate by looking at the brief. Most decent designers wouldn't ask for no less then £25 an hour and some can ask up to £60!
 
But i know a basic six to ten page website wouldn't take me no longer than 1 week to complete, if i was on it everyday. For me that would be £600 - £800. An ecommmerce site and wordpress themes are a little different as they can be unpredictable? But i do know how roughly they can take. This however is without the flaming "know it all" client getting in ya FLIPPING WAY!

Getting back on the subject matter.......your speed will certainly be a slight problem when pricing work as you need to be careful not to overcharge and not being able to meet deadlines. Last thing you want to do is ruin your reputation for being over priced and unreliable. I was told to start off cheap(or as cheap as you can) and then build up your reputation and then use that rep to up your price. Eventually you will get faster and faster and better and better, your prices will creep up and then BINGO! your driving around in that sports car you promised yourself!

ipad has a resolution of 1024x768 so if you resize your browser to that you may get a clue what's happening. I did this in IE and got a horizontal scrollbar and the header had a white 1cm lump at the top right. It's probably because your width is wider that 1024?

can you remove the value submit from the input

Instead of using 1 image for that section, have you considered breaking the image down to two and using two containers? You're structure would end up being something like this:

You can add your form codes in there along with your CSS. The form should not affect the container.
 
I also took the liberty to enhance some of the images for you. Since I don't know the exact font used in that image, I used "Stylus BT" Roman Style Settings with font size of 35 bold #0C6CA6 in Adobe Fireworks CS5. The images are all editable in Adobe Fireworks in case you want to make any changes to them.
