I'm in need of some help/guidance. I need to create a dropdown containing the insurance companies, then a second dropdown showing the insurance types that insurance company offers. once both select dropdowns have been selected display the relevant number. I'm thinking this could be done using a javascript multidimensional array? Really need some help with this so any ideas welcome. See the attachment below:

What's everyones opinion on front-end frameworks (foundation and bootstrap etc.). I've had experience of foundation 3, just looked at foundation 4 and the sass files. Now don't get me wrong I can see that frameworks are useful and can speed up up development time but hell fire I've just spent a couple of hours trying to work it all out. The included javascript plugins do look useful, as does the grid structure, however I just feel more comfortable using my own 'framework', and don't get too frustrated almost to the point when I'm battling against the default framework styles. As I said before, yes I can see the benefits, I just think it might be overcomplicating things. Whats your thoughts, and do you use a framework or prefer to go solo...

For blogging I use Wordpress, as a CMS i lean on Concrete5.

I use concrete5 for 90% of websites I build these days. I've previously used wordpress and joomla!, both excellent in their own way but purely for 'CMS reasons' I believe Concrete5 is the most intuitive to use both for developer and users. The Concrete5 core was built specifically for CMS usage whereas Wordpress was originally built as a blogging tool (which by the way it does excellently). I also like the ease of which users can add/edit pages and that pages can be assigned multiple attributes types similar to the way wordpress uses metadata/custom fields. Building themes is also very easy and flexible in Concrete5. Anything else you want to know just ask!

Sorry it does seem to be querying the posts and pages OK. Any ideas on the other problems I'm having?

Hi guys, In the process of building a wordpress CMS and in need of a bit of help. If you check out this link: http://cardiffuniversity.limegreentangerine.net/wordpress/ First thing that isn't working properly is the search, it doesn't seem to returning the relevant results and also you can see news is the current highlighted page (I guess this is because news is the (blog page)? Secondly when you click on a case study e.g. go to Open cpd in the left hand menu. The case study opens up on the news page. This is probably a permalink issue. Each page e.g. Market research is a sub-page of the parent page in this case Open CPD. The main case studies page is also a sub-page showing the case study posts. Any tips on how I can fix these issues would be great.

Hi, I want to have a 'case-studies' section within my 'About us' section of the site. I already have a news section which is pulling in the 'news' posts. My site structure currently looks like this: Homepage (page) About Us (page) - History (page) - Meet the team (page) - Case studies (page displaying case study posts as title and excerpt) Services (page) News (latest news posts) Contact (page) I've set up the case-studies as a new category and pulled the posts onto the case-studies page template using a custom loop. This is working however when previewing a full case study post it displays it under the news section (probably because this is the default page, permalinks problem?). How can i get it to display the full post but stay within the About us section? I know its jumping to news page because my anchor link within the menu shows up highlighted as active page. Any help would be great.

So stage 1, 2, 3 etc would be subcategories? Each stage is just 1 page of information so would subcategories be necessory? Anyway I'll have a look through the link you sent.

Sorry i meant the pages that are childs of the parent pages e.g. open-cpd will have stages 1-6 and a case study section, bespoke-cpd and activities the same format too. Open-cpd -stage 1 -stage 2 -stage 3 - case studies Bespoke-cpd -stage 1 - stage 2 - stage 3 - case studies Activities - activity 1 - activity 2 - activity 3 - case studies

Beskpoke-cpd and other activities have same layout as open-cpd. store is a one page shop. how should i set up the child pages under open-cpd, posts or pages? And as you can see the open-cpd page has an intro (title, text and image) and then displays an excerpt of each child page/post. any ideas? basically my main question is should these child pages be posts or pages bearing in mind i need pagination when u click through the child pages/posts in each section.

Thanks, Would you advise having a different page template for the top level pages (open, bespoke and activities) then use posts and categorise them to each top level page (open, bespoke and activities) or just use child pages off each top level page? I'm just thinking about the structure of the wordpress site really.

Hey guys, I need to convert this html site to a wordpress cms. I'm not asking for someone to do it rather just give me some pointers on how I'd set it up. It's very page based so would I build it with parent and child pages or would there be a better way? As you can see there are three main sections (open, bespoke and activities) I'll need separate sidebar navigation for each section as well as pagination. Would be interested to hear you wordpress experts ideas on this! Thanks

True! Maybe I'll think of something else to go there instead. I wasn't so keen on displaying the fact my back-end coding skills were currently weak anyway!! On the note of that web design skills box, if possible can you view it in I.E.7, the percentage values (<em> tags) are dropping onto a new line, do you happen to know why? I've tryed loadsa things but nothing seems to work! Oh, just liek to say your coffee and code website looks good by the way, look foward to seeing the final product!

The main problem I got with this is that you are advertising for DIY tools yet the colour scheme is very 'child like' i.e fun and colourful.

Done! Just using basic fonts for now, might look into @font-face though and some free web fonts on font squirril, any recommedations on a serif and sans-srif font to replace the Georgia and Helvetica fonts currently used?

I was thinking that, i think I'll play on the colours a little more, maybe a light background with a hint of colour, see how that goes, The one thing i struggle with most in web design is colours!!! Could you maybe recommend a color I could use?

Hi guys and girls, I've slapped together a mock up of what I want my profile/portfolio site to look like. Any feedback would be great, e.g. design, coding critique etc. I chose a black and white scheme due to my love of Newcastle United football club (well actually I lie, I just liked the mono look) Initially I wanted to add a splash of colour but couldn't settle for an ideal one, any suggestions about that would be great, keep it just black and white or add a colour for links...?? Please be gentle as I'm a beginner after all, though I'll take it on the chin if people disapprove!! My link P.S. I've not tested this in I.E yet, twas designed on the mac Thanks

Well at least your part of a good team of designers/developers doing the right things! The Lynda tutorials seem good but a little expensive at the moment, can you download the tutorials once registered? I'm guessing not?! Also how many months did you suscribe for?

Sounds like a great little idea to get me going, i'll keep that in mind after I've learnt the basics. P.S. Just had a nosey at your website, it's one of the best I've seen on here, really nice clean design You've also designed some lovely sites too. Hopefully I can learn a lot from people like you.

@mrchristoph Thanks dude, yeah I learnt html/css from not only reading material but actually doing it! What would be a good project to get me started, any ideas? I also know that php and mysql are a different animal altogether, I was just saying that's how I learnt the basics of html and css that's all. @CarlyFiorina Yes, thanks for clarifying that!! I've opted for Larry Ullmans PHP for the web 4th edition. I thought it would be a good idea to get a good grasp of PHP before moving onto database design and dynamic stuff using SQL. I had a solid understanding of html before moving onto CSS so hopefully i can make the same progress with PHP and MySQL. I am thinking once I've learnt basics of PHP, Javascript will be easier to understand also?

Fair comment. This might seem a stupid question but how do you test a website if its not already live over two machines? Do you purchase 'dummy' website space to test on before hand? This is something I've not yet grasped! Thanks again for the replies Rob
