Oh no, I use tables - are they really that bad?
I posted a question recently and the very helpful answers I got led on to other postings about the use of tables. This apparently is a no go! I'm new to web design and am using Dreamweaver. I find tables a great way of doing it, because I can place things exactly where I want them. I tried using lots of DIV tags before someone suggested tables, but got all in a mess with them. Are tables really that bad? What's the problem with them? Thanks Nicola

websites for £20, why pay a website designer?
Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows of mrsite.com This seems to be a great template based web design package - it's very cheap and seems to offer so much for such little money. I'm starting out as a web designer, but since finding out about this site, am finding it hard to justify charging for my websites, when someone can go here and get one for less than £20 a year. For this £20 they get a domain name, up to 5 pages, photo gallery, paypal shop, web visitor stats, form, guest book, mailing list, forum & lots lots more. The next package up, which gives 50 pages is only £35 a year. Am I missing something? Does anyone know anything about it - why would anyone pay website designer prices when they can do this? Thanks very much, Nicola

How can they guarantee 1st page Google results?
Hi, Just wondering if anyone can help with how to get my website further up the search engine results page. I've had a look at numerous pages online and discovered there's nothing I can do to guarantee it - other than using appropriate keywords etc & submitting my site to search engines etc. However, there are places that design your site for you & will guarantee they can get you on the first page of search engine results. Can anyone shed any light on this, everything I've read says that's not possible?? Many thanks

got a problem with an image in a marquee
I'm trying to use a marquee to move an image across the screen. My image is quite wide (about 3/4 of the width of the screen) & I want it to scroll right off the left hand side before it comes in again on the right. Problem is, as soon as it reaches the left hand side, it disapears & starts again, rather than continuing to run on. When I replace the img src with a string of text, it works properly. I hope I've made this clear, & that someone can help. Thanks very much. Nicola

marquee - starting the next loop before previous finishes
Hi, I'm not sure whether I can explain this properly. Is there any way I could have my marquee scroll differently, so that it will start again before the previous loop finishes. At the moment, the space is blank for a few seconds while it scrolls off the left edge and before it starts again in on the right. I'd like it to start again when the last one is about half way across. I've searched online but I can't find out how to do this. Is it possible? Thanks very much Nicola

Good ideas for design / layout
Hi, I'm new to web design, & am using Dreamweaver 8. I'm managing to use it successfully to do anything I'm trying, but I'm finding coming up with the design/layout ideas a big problem. All the sites I try just look really boring compared with every site I ever visit. I'm not very artistic / creative which is the problem I think, although I'm sure that's also the case for many people who have a good working knowledge of the software. Is there anywhere I could pick up some tips on this, or I wonder if there's a course I should be going on or something. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than just copying other sites. I'm sure I'll pick it up with time, however until then my sites are looking dreadful. Many thanks, Nicola

Where to find an image
Hi, I'd like to use a red paint splash as a logo for use on a site I'm going to create in Dreamweaver. I'd like to be able to do something in Flash with it for buttons, like have it shrink down to a circle then back up again when clicked on. I'm new to both Dreamweaver & Flash and am not quite sure exactly where to start with this. Can anyone tell me where I could even find a splash image that I could use, I've tried drawing one freehand but it doesn't look very good. Thanks very much Nicola

Hi, I'm new too
Thanks for the welcoming comments, How did you all get started? Do you still come on here looking for answers, or just to help out us newbies? I've never looked at the code on the jambo site - oh my god! you're right - so many lines of code there! I used MS Publisher, which is so easy to get a site live, obviously not a very good one though! ;0) Well, I'm away for a wee gander around the forums. Thanks again

Hi, I'm new too
Hi, I'm a complete novice to web design but can't wait to get going. I've always been interested in it, but have never had the opportunity to take it any further. I now have this opportunity. I gave up my work about a year ago, when I was pregnant with my 3rd child. She's now 7 months old and I'm planning to do web design from now on. I created a site for a friend in MS Publisher a few months ago, which seems to work really well, although I've been told this is a dreadful package to design a site with. (if anyone would like to take a look and give me any constructive criticism, it's www.jambojambo.co.uk) After doing that site and deciding this is definately what I'd like to do, I've just completed training in Dreamweaver 8 & Flash 8. I have a couple of friends that are looking for sites and already have one company (a friend of a friend) who are prepared to pay me for my services! A very scary prospect at the moment, seeing as it's all so new. Already I've come across problems with another new term to me - 'scripting'. Apparently it's not enough to learn 2 whole new packages - in order to have a simple contact form on a site, I need to know a whole other programming language too! I have a feeling I'll be using these forums a lot in the coming weeks & months...hope you're all prepared to see my name popping up a lot! Thanks very much in advance to any of you that try to help me along in this exciting new venture. x

Custom made forms
Hi, I'm new to web design, having just finished courses in Dreamweaver & Flash 8. I've successfully managed to design a website but am having huge problems with a contact form, as I cannot get my head around the scripting bit. As there's so much I still don't know about DW and Flash, I'm wondering if it's worth my time at the moment to try and figure out how to do this scripting, or whether my time's best spent learning about the other features of these programms and just use a custom made form from somewhere online. I've heard that using forms from some of these places have problems with security though. I've found www.mycontactform.com which I think looks really good, and was hoping someone may be able to tell me whether they agree, or think it should be avoided. Or, does anyone know of any other similar places I could get a form from. I hope someone can help... Many thanks for reading this
