June 12, 20251 yr Hello! 20i have just published a study on green energy and internet services: https://www.20i.com/green-survey They asked some interesting questions: Would you pay more for a greener tool or service? How important is sustainability compared with price and features? Have you ever avoided a tool or service due to environmental concerns? What are your thoughts? And what do your customers say? I didn’t expect 68% of people to say they actively consider the environmental impact of the digital tools and services they use!
June 13, 20251 yr Yeah it's clear that concern for green issues is a thing. What I didn't spot in the survey is anything about designers/developers who aim to build energy efficient sites/apps.
June 17, 20251 yr Pleasantly surprised to see the level of awareness and concern so high! When I worked agency side we had the odd customer who would query our approach to sustainability, but it was never really a big focus area outside of that. I wonder if it will become a selling point for designers in the future, especially when pitching for tenders.
June 17, 20251 yr Author What shocked me was how many folks said they were willing to shell out more for green solutions. 67% (35% + 32%) being up for paying moderately more to significantly more is wild! I'm glad - but didn't realise I was that out of touch 🤣
June 17, 20251 yr The problem here is that IT isn't green. Look at how AI is using huge resources both in hardware and infrastructure. Cloud storage isn't much better And MS insisting we upgrade to Win11 which will results in millions of perfectly serviceable PCs going to landfill. Then look at how we are encourage to upgrade phones (that can't be repaired). You may have a small efficient site, use a host powered by renewables and avoid social media but it's a tiny drop in the huge profligate world of IT.
July 2, 20251 yr That’s actually a super interesting stat — 68% is way higher than I would've guessed! It’s good to see people becoming more conscious about the environmental side of tech. Personally, I think if the green option doesn’t sacrifice performance, paying a little more feels justified. And yeah, I’ve definitely skipped tools that seemed wasteful or out of touch. Thanks for sharing the survey — here’s a quick Google search for anyone curious about greener digital alternatives. Edited July 2, 20251 yr by katy529
