Anyone who uses linux has known about this for years.. and a lot of people who use windows do too.

But just in case someone hasn't heard of this I thought I would post it.

 

Description:

 

Everything microsoft office is and more. I believe it has many of the features of the advanced office packages too..

 

but if you are in school or don't wanna fork over significant amounts of money to type a paper, make a spread sheet or even a power point presentation then this is the right product for you.

 

its free. and it will save as microsoft office file types (the Word format of .doc for example)

and it opens all the main microsoft office application files.

 

Again probably old news to most people but wanted to share it for those who might not know about it.

 

Also they accept donations.. even a few dollars is appreciated I am sure. I donated $50 usd a couple years ago now i donate around $5 a year.. which i am sure adds up.

Well to me Open Office isn't so good , When i switch from OO to O7 office i get compatibility errors , Glyphs go missing etc.

Also the power point thing in it has effects that Office )7 doesn't support breaking my presentation. I'm Happy with Office 07 VLM thank you though for the thought.

I love open office and hate O7. I used O7 at a friends and hated it at first...use...

I think OO is awsome, Although Office 03 is the best i'm my oppinion. I've never had any problem will OO's compatablility with O3 but it dosnt like opening O7 excel files.

 

I think if you don't want to waste money go for OO in some way's i'd say its better than MS Office

Certainly if you're on a budget you can't beat OO! I have to say that I found lots of niggly problems when I used it a couple of years back, it seemed very buggy, lots of compatibility issues and strange behaviour. Shame.

I've just started to use Open Office on my laptop running Fedora.

I really like it! Not too concerned about any compatibility issues as I simply use it as a stand alone office suite for my personal mucking about. As bluedreamer said, if you're on a budget, Open Office can't be beaten.

Mac users may find neo office to be more suitable. It's essentially the same thing, but specifically for mac OS X.

I've got it on my mac, my laptop and my new linux based notebook it's fantastic and works just the way you expect it to. And when your done the files are compatible with microsoft office you can even save files in the old amiga for format!.

 

 

It also has a great recovery system for when you accidently forget to save or if the power goes out.

I've used OpenOffice before, and while it's a nice alternative it can't and won't ever replace Office fully for me. There are just things in MS Office that are handled much more nicely, and being on a Mac OpenOffice is still stuck on the X Windowing System which greatly reduces productivity and the UI of the software. I'm looking forward to a native Mac OO though. As a piece of OpenSource software though it's definitely great.

I have never had an issue with OpenOffice being opened by Microsoft office products as long as I save my OO files as Microsoft Office file types.

 

And not once have I ever had a problem with OO not doing what it is supposed to while Microsoft office has given me so much headache.

 

@dav how do you know it will never replace it for you? That doesn't make sense. OpenOffice is ran by people who listen to the people who use their software. While Microsoft just makes what they think we need.

 

So you have a better chance of improvement from openoffice than you ever will from ms office.

Come on... "Everything Microsoft Office is and more."? That's just not true. MsOffice has tons of features that open office doesn't.

 

Plus - open office can't open docx files.

You would be surprised how many students in my class talked about not being able to afford MS Office, so I shared Openoffice and they fell in love.

 

And sorry I am anti-microsoft in just about every way. I hate windows, hate their company (can you believe the US government allows them to file as a "small business" and take benefits from that?!)

 

I am an opensource whore. If it makes my life a bit tougher then so be it. I removing windows completely tonight and running Ubuntu only

 

So many web development programs that are available for free for linux its crazy.

 

And if supporting openoffice and donating money means that one day there will be the perfect office program available at no cost, then I am all for supporting it like that. It won't get better if people don't contribute in some way. Even if its just by reporting issues you have with it.

I like OO but I do have to admit it's a bit buggy. I'm just getting used to 07 Office but they redid all of the layout so it's a real bugger to find things. 03 was the best IMHO.
