How to add meta descriptions for certain URL's

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have the following problem. I am using Yoast for my meta description and have added a language (spanish) to my website using the TranslatePress Plugin. That means every page has now a second url like this:

www.example.com/t-shirt

www.example.com/es/t-shirt

However, I can only edit the meta description of the original page (www.example.com/t-shirt) with Yoast.

Do you have an idea how i can manually change the meta descriptions of the ES slug?

You can’t. At least you can’t with the combination of those two plugins.

Yoast may be popular but it’s one of the worst SEO plugins.

What would be my options without Yoast? I am not depending on it. So I am open to use a different plugin instead or manually adding meta descriptions by adding code to the functions.php whatsoever.

The main problem is the translation plugin. Because they are auto generated they aren’t pages/posts you can access and edit. And that’s why you can create a meta description.

I’m not sure there is a simple solution. Maybe you could run a script to force the translator to include Yoast meta data but that means hacking the plugins.

Probably not much help but I have used WPML for multi-lingual wordpress sites and it had no issue working with Yoast. Maybe worth trying that if TranslatePress doesn't work out for you.

Why not use a custom field for your ES entries?

I guess this is not possible because I only have the english posts, at least i dont know how. I cant access or edit the ES posts because they are auto generated.

Thank you but WPML has too much impact on the site performance which I would like to avoid. ;)

And this is your problem. Auto-generated posts do not form part of the Yoast system so will be ignored. You could write a script to force Yoast to check these posts but it's not going to be a simple fix.

Another option is to remove the meta description and let Google extract the snippet from the page contents.

I see. Then I will have to purchase the pro version of translate press. It comes with individual url slug feature per translation.

Why do you consider Yoast as one of the worse SEO plugins? I personally use All in one SEO Pack nowadays.

A whole bunch of reasons.

They have the traffic light thing. It’s misleading because they have a focus keyword. SEO has moved on in the last few years and a more holistic approach is needed.

They load each page twice, once to display and a second time to analyse the page. You don’t see this second load but it can seriously hamper performance on a busy site.

Most of the features have nothing to do with SEO.

Just about the only thing to need from an SEO plugin is the ability to edit the title and description.
