October 6, 20187 yr v. small budget site (local fishing club) with budget hosting (no one-click Wordpress install on c-panel... ) ftp'd wordpress files into the root, but when i go to http://kokkolankalastajainseura.fi/wp-admin/install.php?step=1 i get a "This page isn’t working kokkolankalastajainseura.fi is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 500" if i refresh the page i get the the start of the install process but with bits missing from the bottom half don't know whethe this is user error or something wrong on the server - what's the next step?
October 6, 20187 yr Have you created the database? You need to do this before attempting to install wordpress https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
October 6, 20187 yr Author yes that's where i went to find instructions (it's about 8 years ago since i did this added the database and edited the wp config and updated it on the server (just covered the username and pw in the screenshot) database creation was successful. i even went to the database manger and did a check, and also a repair database and they were allegedly ok.
October 6, 20187 yr And have you created the user? Unless the WP installer knows about 'dave' it can't progess.
October 6, 20187 yr Author lol thinki'm too tired to do this properly - thought i could create user, but what i need to do is pick an existing user (i.e. the username i registered with the db: kokko829_john? and then just enter the password when it recognises this user?
October 6, 20187 yr Author it should but it didn't after i put in the username (the username i used for the database) there is no next step - no way to go to the password. I tried in a a different browser (first chrome then firefox) and same problem there. damn. what else can i check or do? Edited October 6, 20187 yr by davep
October 6, 20187 yr Author I've already added the user to the database and assigned ALL priveleges... don't understand this at all. on my hosting it was so easy with the one click install thing. evenlast time i did this it worked just fine. i don't understand why it only loads half that dialogue box and not the password field it should look like the attached of course Edited October 6, 20187 yr by davep
October 7, 20187 yr I've just set up a WP site using the method detailed in the codex and it all worked perfectly. But I did use PHP MyAdmin and followed the exact steps listed.
October 7, 20187 yr Author thanks, strange. friend suggested it could be a file permissions issue - that WP might not have sufficient permissions to write what it needs to... will look at https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions and post back when i've tried that
October 7, 20187 yr Author thanks, strange. friend suggested it could be a file permissions issue - that WP might not have sufficient permissions to write what it needs to... will look at https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions and post back when i've tried that UPDATE: omg. nope. changed all the folders to 775 and files to 664 recursively in the root (public html 'root' folder) and still the same poo. client is asking about upgrading to the next level package (gold!) with the one-click install option. only 2 euos more a month looks likely .... still want to know why this isn't working. either it's the server config or my error.
October 7, 20187 yr Have you tried creating a user in PHP MyAdmin rather than use cpanel? Are you sure your wp-config.php is 100% correct? Edited October 7, 20187 yr by fisicx
October 7, 20187 yr Author update: now works! lol deleted the whole thing, made a new DB and added user then went through the setup -i think last time i got something mixed up with the user pw and the db or something -no messing about with read/write permissions or anything. thanks for all the help. was slightly less than 5 minutes (this time).
October 8, 20187 yr Glad to hear that it is okay now. Most hosting companies like mine have a 1 click installer ready for wordpress and other CMS like Joomla, Drupal, etc.
