Last week I got a bill from WooCommerce kindly letting me know I was due to pay $10,000+ for the extensions I own. At first I thought it was an accounting mistake, turned out it wasn't and they had just doubled their renewal prices (without telling anyone). I thought that was pretty nice of them (Yeah right! **sarcasm**). So anyway, I paid the price and will continue to do so (I need my updates!!!), but I am now giving all of my extensions away for free.

I don't use Wordpress but that subscription pricing model seems a bit steep. I had a look at pricing of various WC extensions, on first look prices don't look to bad if they were one off purchases per sites but as a susbcription horrendously expensive!

This is what I was saying on a previous thread about avoiding Woo Commerce. People get encouraged to buy it because it's free, but it ends up being really expensive because extensions are required to do just about anything. For example, if you want nested categories, that's like $99 a year, it's insane.

 

It's funny how people see the cost of something like Craft Commerce at a $700 one-off fee as too expensive, the reality is that this is actually good value for what you get, and e-commerce isn't cheap to do right. You're also buying in to a well built product, the code for Woo Commerce is a trash, it's amazing it even runs. I couldn't imagine sinking thousands into a system every year that's built so poorly.

All too true, mentioning Craft Commerce at $700 (plus $300 for the Craft licence) at a one time fee of $1000 for a complete ecommerce solution is a bargain

You can but you barely get anything from the base version. The whole product is designed and marketed around buying commercial themes and extensions. Just look at the docs, there's no indication of how you would build anything custom. What if I want to write the checkout myself? If you compare the docs for Craft Commerce or Expresso for EE it's quite telling.

I agree - I was just saying you can build a working woocommerce store without plugins.

 

And there are loads of docs and examples on editing the code so you can easily do your own thing.

 

This isn't to say craft or expresso aren't better solutions but for many people they can get a woo store up and running for a lot less than a craft license. I helped a chap build a site selling carpet off cuts. He uploads the products weekly form a CSV and uses just a simple theme and a filtering plugins. It's worked for him and he is now making loads of dosh.
