Design Suggestion for my 3D shopping website

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I do have a plan to create a 3D virtual shopping website, so i'm converting my 2D ecommerce website to 3D virtual shopping website.

Already customization is going in my website, my question is " what are all the new to be added in 3D shopping site both design wise and functionalities wise ?" Bcz its easier to change things in earlier stage.

Do anyone have idea on this ?

( MotionCart : motioncart.mercuryminds.com - This is the software product which is helps us to change my website into 3D completely, may be useful for others )

Thanks

From a user point of view would I really want to have to stroll through a 3D store for hours when other online stores just let me search for and buy my item in an instant?

As for what function and design stuff you'd need, I would take a look at any existing sites like this or ask the creators for examples.

I agree with this, if somebody wants the whole shopping experience they will go to a physical store. The other kind of shopper wants to get something fast, and quickly compare prices etc, the 3d store fills neither of these needs. And i think this is perfectly illustrated by the fact that the online giants like Amazon have not gone down this route -- plainly because it will have poor conversion.

I remember seeing this quite a few years ago so the concept isn't new. As I remember it was Flash based.

Although it's a novel concept, in reality it will require a lot of effort for a customer to use compared with a "normal" shopping site, and with a hugely increased cognitive load. Then you have small devices to consider - how would it work on a smartphone?

I think you should gave a backup plan if your sales go through the floor :)

Im not an expert on websites, but a semi pro shopper :santa_rolleyes:

I cant see the point of a virtual shop persee. But I would like to view items in 3d. For example I was once going to buy a new car and was able to look at the car online in virtual 3d which was both cool and useful.

Yes that indeed would be useful. But to have the whole store in my opinion is complete overboard and as BlueDreamer mentioned, it would not be at all, mobile friendly.

- imagine going to the mall to buy some new weapons :)

Better still going to the mall with some new weapons.

Hmm, I think I'll have to dust off the PS2 and load up Vice City.

To put those weapons to good use, you will also need loads of xmas shopping zombies.

Sorry a little off topic, unless the zombies joined a unique dating website: Plenty of Dead Fish. :santa_afro:

Seeing an item in 3D would obviously help sales, as would being able to virtually 'try it on' but like everyone's said, the whole 3D shop thing is not a great idea. It may be a cool gimmick for five minutes but I'd be willing to bet big bucks it would put most people off.

Thanks for your suggestion. Even i had too many questions in my mind when i initiated this project but had a hope. Because there was a serious conversation happened when people start seeing online 2D ecommerce websites, then we just used to it and feels better. Hope 3D do have such welcome in near future. And it do have more features which would be a advantage for seller and shopper, example- customized offers, one shopper can chat with other shopper and they can discuss about the product etc...

These things gave me a hope that it would gain a lot within a year.

And i take up all your suggestions and it helps me a lot.

Thanks

Are you sure there's a demand for this? My guess is this has been tried and failed already, I'd suggest looking into this before putting lots of time and effort into it!

Hi,

Yes that's right. Hope there will not be much difficulties in MotionCart software because it is getting viral nowadays.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi, mr/mrs salesperson from "Motion Cart". Just watched your god awful sales video (the voice made me lol a little). Overall, seems very gimmicky.

The accepted practice for an ecommerce site is to make iot load very quickly, ensure users do not have the think and ensure products are easy to sort/filter.

If I slapped an install of something like "Motion Cart" on my larger/busier ecommerce sites I'd see the conversation rate decrease a load, whilst watching the bounce rate increase.

This.. Speed is paramount. I would bet my life savings that a 3D store as described in this thread would have lower conversion.

Hi Mr. visitor from “webdesignerforum.co.uk”. Just saw your comment. With all due respect, I would like to let you know that I just initiated the thread to get my doubts clarified regards new 3D site as i mentioned earlier.
After using the software, I personally found it quite useful for my business. I suggest that you too give it a try, before jumping into conclusions and passing comments…be it negative or positive.
And regarding the two articles you mentioned…I didn’t find anything worth laughing in them. And they were quite explanatory in serving their purpose.
But of course, whatever you mentioned in your previous comments about MotionCart software, the two related articles and the software’s website could be your personal views (not sure, based on what you formed those opinions)…and I respect your rights to express your views. No offence meant!

To backup Rallport, I think with a concept like this he doesn't need to use the software to form an opinion, it doesn't matter how good the software is if the concept is bad.

Don't you think the giants like Amazon have researched this kind of thing before. Of course they have! and they chose not to use it - because they know it will greatly hurt their profits.

The only 3d part that could be useful is to see the products in 3D but nobody wants to walk around a 3D store. When we shop online we want to get what were looking for and fast. Thet's why the huge online retailers spend vast sums of money trying to make their systems faster, more intuitive to users.

Clara I would not give up too soon, sometimes its worth giving it a try regardless of expert opinion. And if it fails its usually the best way of learning, and then that can maybe lead to a more suitable solution. Maybe its ahead of its time and present technology :(

It will fail if browsing is slow and boring, tweak the idea? ..make browsing enjoyable, surprising and interesting, like a game. Just my non expert opinion.

Hi rbrtsmith, thanks for the comment. Are you sure that the concept doesn’t have worth? Maybe it could pick up in the near future…
And big fishes may be currently researching about further possibilities of innovative ideas like this…
From an ordinary shopper’s point of view, people might not be interested in walking around a 3D store. But what about physically handicapped people and senior citizens, who have difficulty in travelling all the way to a physical store? And even overseas people who want to shop ignoring national boundaries…but at the same time, would like to have a realistic experience…I think this idea will greatly benefit such people. What’s your opinion about it?
Yes, this concept might not look good for an average shopper…but definitely worth for senior citizens and other special cases as I’ve told above…which is not a rarity!

There could be edge case scenarios where the concept could be useful, like some kind of themed Disney store that kids would love, but it certainly wouldn't catch on mainstream. 3D technology has been around for a long time, without a shadow of a doubt the big fish have experimented with it.

For a more mainstream application of 3D I see being able to see a product in 3D be useful, or say on a luxury car website, being able to see inside the car in 3D and move around the exterior. But the store itself, I don't see that I'm afraid.

I think a user with disabilities will struggle to move around a 3D enviroment, we have screenreaders that do a good job for those visually impared, those with motor issues would probably find a 3D Enviroment more difficult to navigate than a well thought out flat UI. I don't think shops differ that much abroat to be honest (I've travelled a lot so got first hand exp on this) maybe there is a very small group of people who would like this idea but If I were you I'd put my money elsewhere - or into displaying products in 3D.

For a moment, you may be right. But still I guess this type of idea would go well for small and mid sized
businesses focusing on a small or particular group of target customers with special needs. And yes,
displaying products in 3D is a good idea…will definitely give it a try!
