Another Logo

Featured Replies

Myself and my business partner decided to dump the name mention design, so of course that has led to me having to recreate everything from scratch including a new logo

Here is my proposal, I think its self explanatory as to what it is and what it signifies (or at least I hope it does)

please tell me what you think and if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them

thanks

not sure it says lab enough - but i realise there are quite a few lab ideas around... what about ideas lab?

or then keep the words but change the image... perhaps

Thanks for the comment, I think I alt to explain it after all

The words are the domain and (trading as) company name (or will be) so cant be changed, the concept is one of idea through design, to develop ideas and build on them - as denoted by the layering stack.. a lot of 'lab' based company names use the lightbulb to signify ideas.

I don't get the 'stacking' concept without you explaining it to me, and even then the mark itself looks more like a spiralling bulb. Also, as a creative business I'd avoid a massive cliche like a lightbulb denoting ideas. That already sets you at a disadvantage against your competitors.

Thank you, I was kind of limited as to what I could use to represent the 'lab' as there are not many recognisable items except those that have already been done to death also.

I don't see it as a disadvantage, I see it as something familiar that people will feel at home with, whilst displaying something different at the same time.

The spaces between the 'bricks' signifies free thinking and the bricks the actual idea building up to form a complete idea, one which has been researched and planned and not just thrown together.

i could have joined all those edges to create a swirl but in all honesty, I would not have been able to come up with a concept for it.

I don't really like any of them. I really dislike the lightblub in logos.

If I had to choose one from the three, I would pick the top one. For the different colours in the logo and keeping it simple and straight forward.

Dale.

They are all different versions of the same logo, each would be used depending on the medium, for example the black and white one would be ideal for letter heads etc

The colours are not set as yet, I did that as an example of where I was thinking of taking it, I could do multi colours one colour or leave it as it is

The name of the company limited my options as to what to use, I understand that not everyone will like it, or even the concept, but as long as it sends the message I need it to, like is irrelevant.

Going by the feedback so far, I will give it a second look to see if there is anywhere else I could take it, but I have already spent a couple of days on the concept and then the actual logo, which is why I am unsure of where else this could go.

Thanks to all.

A completely different direction. It be something simple and typographic – I'm thinking something inspired by the periodic table like the Breaking Bad titles for example.

Sorry but I don't think the periodic table would work, it's one of the things I have already considered, all you would end up with are meaningless squares, unable to be understood without including the letters too, then it could be too compliated and not scalable.

I think the logo is already simple and recognisable, it's the combination of concept, design also the font chosen that I was looking for feedback on

Just to let you know, I don't create a logo without a decent amount of research around the business (this will be my business) and the message so some of the responses I have heard here make little sense to me and my research.

Currently I don't see this as scalable (too much going on in the bulb to work at small scales, also 'labs' needs increasing in size). I'm not a fan of the concept as I've stated, I don't necessarily associate a lightbulb with a lab. Plus in black and white the lightbulb looks broken/shattered. I'm not sure that's the image I'd want for my business but if you're happy then go with it.

As for the font, I guess it serves the purpose, though as I've mentioned 'labs' is to small. Making it bigger might help the footprint of the logo too, currently everything's rather cramped and the vertically stacked version looks a little awkward. Perhaps reducing the size of the bulb would help.

The logo is recognisable both small and large, Scalable within logos is not just about size though, it also means that the colours can change with no issues to the design, it can grow with the business and can work across multiple platforms.

The word labs is smaller because it's a way of showing the importance of design in the business, most who wanted to do that might think of using bold or even a different colour, this is experimental though and I will double check it later.

The concept when you think of stacked layers is to build, I could use colours to make the design part of the visual more obvious but Colour is something I will be doing next although I would not be sure I would want more than a couple of colours at this stage.

Despite you being unable to see the link between lab and a lightbulb there are plenty of 'lab' businesses that use it, I got at least a dozen on my mood board before creating this logo.

It sounds like you've already decided this is the route you're taking so I'm not sure why you're really asking for feedback.

Ok, this logo can 'scale' in terms of growing with the business, but what you currently have does not work at a small scale in terms of actual size – the details of the screw in the bulb are completely lost for example, so why even include them? Refine it until it looks the same at a small scale as it does at a larger one.

If there are 'plenty' of businesses already using a bulb concept in their logos, that right there is reason enough to look at other options. Surely you want to be unique?

It's not that I have made up my mind, I am just waiting for advice that does not go against everything I know to be right.

I have already stated, and you even replied, there is a very limited amount of things you can use to represent 'lab' that is recognisable

The logo is recognisable small, you can see the individual layers, you can see its overall shape, the fact you cannot see all three of the bulb base layers is inconcequencial, check out most logos small enough and it gets impossible to see individual lines but you can still see what they are.

There are no 'unique' ideas left, there are no 'original' ideas left (mark twain) you can only be as creative as you can, everything has been done many times before, just in a different format.

This is an interesting read http://disinfo.com/2013/11/thing-original-idea/

Hmmm.. I think you need to go back to the drawing board here - Periodic table could work, very well - if you play it right, with certain things.

I think the font choice is wrong as well, personally I would of done something much much different.

Whilst you've tried, I can see that try and be more flowing in your design. The font is the wrong choice, I can see what you're trying to do but honestly, it doesn't work. Spend some more time playing with Fonts. Personally I think it's got a long way to go before you even finish off your choice. Theres no link there either, the best advice I can give you - start again.

Maybe something like this (Excuse the quick pen tool doodle)

Good luck

You talk about the font being wrong and then tell me to start from scratch?

You offer a logo that has no meaning, something you have thrown together in a matter of moments with no real thought, it's not the doodle that's offensive it's the belief that a quick drawing could be better then something that had been planned, researched and has meaning.

If there is a disconnect, can you tell me how?

If you don't think the logo works, can you tell me why? Please don't tell me 'because you don't like it' are you not able to see the link between research 'lab' and idea for example or even build and stack?

I want to take advice but there has to be factual reason behind it.

Cheers

So far the only things that make any sense are the following sentences

Plus in black and white the lightbulb looks broken/shattered

I don't get the 'stacking' concept without you explaining it to me

Although, due to the name there are not many options aside from the 'done to death' options left.

All I can say is, you've made your mind up. You won't listen to any advice, simple quick comments. You won't take any advice from anyone. So why bother asking for help? Was you trying to gloat?

Mine was a simple quick 30 second doodle to help you. Clearly, you're the best logo designer in the entire world and your own arrogance, is what will stop you from learning. I can see you have yet to find you're self as a logo designer yet, that will come.

Im sorry if this sounds rude but I think you need it. Is this your first logo you have ever done? All I'm saying is, go away and sketch, doodle whatever you do to create your design but that above, doesn't work. Simple. no matter how much depth or meaning it has.

Who said anything about it being better? I never said that one bit, just something that might of helped or a quick suggestion that might of helped.

But clearly you know what your doing.

The font doesn't work with the different sizes, it looks odd and is possibly the wrong font choice, reason, Try to use a differ Sans Serif font - also possible change the kerning on the font too - might help - not too much though, too much could ruin it.

If this is your design company logo, you need to make it the best, or really shout out so that people see your logo and think "wow" not just meh - which they/I/any others do. Whilst the logo it's self, is "ok" nothing less/nothing more. Simply ok.

I also think your looking far too much into it, which could be hampering your design flow. This is my honest opinion. Try to be more open minded and I would expect something better to come into it.

Good luck.

How can you expect me to take serious advice from someone who suggests starting from scratch without explaining why? You said about the font in your last comment and then told me to delete the whole thing? I just want to know why I should take that advice when you have not given me a decent, no in fact any reason why the logo should be scrapped other then the possibility that you don't like it?

Posting a 10 second image, using a beaker as the 'A' is even less creative than me having to use a lightbulb, do you realise there are more of those than there were lightbulb lab logos? - the least creative thing you could ever use to demonstrate 'potential' was probebly that,

Part of the process for any design, whether it's for logo or a whole website is opinion but those opinions must have some standing to make sense, the question of why needs explaining, you can't just say 'start from scratch' without explaining the reasons, reasons that need to make design sense.

You say the above was about 'trying to gloat' you could not be more wrong, it was about pointing out the difference between a comment that explains why something maybe does not work and something that makes zero sense, everything else had just been useless drivel that means nothing so why should I listen to it?

  • Author

You realise that I did my research as to why I should use what I have, I answered why, who, what etc, why is it you can give an opinion but can't explain why?

This is the problem today, everyone thinks they can design but most can simply use photoshop

So, I tried to read this whole post twice just to get the tone of it - seems like a bit of angst and negativity has unfortunately obscured some basic facts, so hopefully I can add a bit of humour and positive energy.

If there was any greater challenge in graphic design it would be coming up with "your own" logo design. Afterall, It's what defines and represents us to our potential clients. It absolutely has to be beyond just good.

I think your logo is ok, but I do struggle with the concept of combining artistic design & graphics with a laboratory. But as you have already pointed out you are stuck with the name, so we move on.

There are no 'unique' ideas left, there are no 'original' ideas left (mark twain) you can only be as creative
as you can, everything has been done many times before, just in a different format.

Sounds like a rather dreary and self-defeating end. Maybe he was just going through a dry patch when he penned that one. B)

Yeah sure, as designers we can often get stuck in a rut - we look at other designs for inspiration and we wrack our brains trying to come up with something that is unique. I like to think there is always another angle, and perhaps we just haven't seen it, or drank enough red wine yet.

Cheers :pp... whoops, sorry, I meant  ... nup, still not right, how about :D.

Steve.
