Why do you use your own scripts for eCommerce?

Featured Replies

I'm a Web Developers, and sometimes I work on the eCommerce sites, so I know very well technical issues, but not so much about how people use it. There's a thing that sits in my mind and I can't get it, could you please explain it to me.

Why you create your own solutions (or setup woocommerce, magento etc...) instead of using paid on-demand services? What features do you need from woocommerce or magento that are missing on the on-demand services?

It can't possibly be that you try to save money, because those services cost as little as 15$/month (or maybe some of them even 100$/month - it doesn't matter, it's pennies).

And, I am sorry but I'll be honest, most of those custom eCommerce installs looks not as nice as on-demand eCommerce services.

So, tell me please - why do you prefer custom installs versus polished and ready to use on-demand services?

P.S.

I can understand why huge shops needs custom solutions - because they need some advanced stuff that not needed in small shops and doesn't exist in on-demand services.

I'm personally indifferent to either on-demand or a shop in a box as I only make custom projects. IMO both have advantages, both have potential issues and both are subject to the developers who built the original engine and the designer who put then built off the engine. The reason (I assume) more will build off magneeto etc is down to their knowledge of the engine and what can be achieved with it plus taking over a project built in one of the main engines is easier. In addition many of the 'on-demand' shops I have seen have limitations and generally come out as a 'cookie cutter' shop, one size fits all with no flexibility to implement additional mark-up etc to make your onsite seo bits stand out from others using the same platform.

Like BrowserBugs I'm pretty agnostic about what platform is used but most importantly I aim to find the best solution for the client, their business, their products and their customers. If that's a SAAS product then fine, if it needs SunShop, PinnacleCart, CS-cart or any other system that's fine as well.

I don't take on everything, eg if I find that Pinnacle is the best fit for the client I'll help them find a good Pinnacle developer. If the best fit falls within my specialist area then I'll offer my services.

Wow, I didn't knew that Shopify takes 2% tax for each order, that's looks like a significant downside.

Yes, taking money is ok, but it already takes money for subscription 29$/month. 2% from each deal is another story, if you have 100 deals with 100$ each you'll pay 200$ (and that's very small sales volume) - quite different from 29$ :).

Well, there are some with advanced stuff based on saas. It depends only on you how deep you search. I worked with idosell and paltform seems to be ready for middle size and those with hundreds of shipments every day. Apart of admin panel they provide you can startup within tide budget.

So if I would recommend to anyone I would go for on demand services.

It Doesn't matter one can use ready made scripts to build ecommerce websites once we have developers to customize the site readily according to requirements.

The advantages of developing ecommerce site from scratch is it allows you to add functionalities as you wanted. Also there is scope to upgrade the ready made

scripts but it has certain limitations as you the website might not cater user needs as it reaches more consumer base. Though there are several cms tools

to start an ecommerce store I loved ecommercemix ready made scripts which allows to launch our ecommerce store instantly with amazing set of features

including android and ios apps.

Here i wanna tell something for all tech folks. Own script designed by all actually problem is , we dont know actual ecommerce business correctly to create comfort zone with users & admin.

So better the tech experts recommend , go along with successful ecommerce clone script like waneloclone.net ,fancyclone.net because these and all now hot hitted ecommerce websites for multivendor ecommerce business & that leads to lead the targetted traffic.

Well. Magento is a pretty standard piece of software this days.

One of the benefits of using self-deployed solution might be data portability. I wouldn't put all eggs in one basket, and using a custom, on-demand solution is basically that. Should the provider go bust I cannot move to another provider. I cannot restore the backup. I am forced to be with that company and pay a lot to recreate the store from scratch (not to mention loosing sales in the meantime).
