#1 Ranking in Google, Nowhere in Bing. Tips?

Featured Replies

Hi!

I run a website covering local bars, restaurants, tourism guides and so on in my city. It's been going for about a year and a half, and currently has maybe 60 pages of genuinely good quality content (ie not spammy), and everything is generally quite heavily shared, with lots of images etc etc.

Now, if you search for things like "best pubs in Glasgow", "best bars Glasgow city centre" and all of that, my site is regularly 1st or 2nd in Google, and as a result gets about 15,000 pageviews of traffic a month from Google alone.

However, if you search for similar in Bing, it's nowhere to be found! If you do a site: search I can see that all of these articles have been indexed but it's just not ranking remotely well.

Any ideas on how I can get up there a bit? And I wonder why there's such a discrepancy? I've signed up for bing webmaster tools, sent them my sitemap and so on, but I'm not seeing any improvement whatsoever.

Appreciate any tips or ideas!

Edit: Just to give a specific example, if you search "best pubs in glasgow" in Google, my site is consistently 1st and has been for at least 6 months. In Bing it's 34th!! I would hope for/expect at least bottom half of page 1.

Very strange usually its much easier to rank a keyword at Bing and yahoo than to Google.

But anyways who cares , the amount of traffic you will receive from google its way better than both others search engines.

In my opinion is better to focus rank more keywords to google, than try to rank same keywords in BING.

I certainly know what you mean, but Bing is making more and more headway on Google, and I really like the idea of widening my traffic sources.

Well, read Bing Webmaster guidelines and then optimize your website according to it. For your ease, I am mentioning Bing Webmaster Guidelines given below:

  • Ensure a clean, keyword rich URL structure is in place
  • Make sure content is not buried inside rich media (Adobe Flash
  • Player, JavaScript, Ajax) and verify that rich media doesn't hide links from crawlers.
  • Create keyword-rich content based on research to match what users are searching for. Produce fresh content regularly.
  • Don’t put the text that you want indexed inside images. For example, if you want your company name or address to be indexed, make sure it is not displayed inside a company logo.

Amazingly enough I didn't get to number 1 in Google without following these tips! :)

What i'm really trying to figure out is why there is such a discrepancy between the two engines, when I'm already using generally very good SEO practice.

Actually Jelly first of all, any company who creates a search engine has the same concept of creating it, "to provide more and more useful searches to the audience for the specific query". Due to difference of companies, some processes of filtering the results are different from each other but the core concept is same.

Wouldn't worry about it. Even if you rank highly in Bing, you are unlikely to gain much traffic. Your efforts would be more worthwhile focusing on Google.

Thats weird because most of the time the quite opposite happens whena website gets ranked well in bing but not in google.SInce you have got a superb position in the highly searched search engine, your high traffic coming to your website. For bing , i think it would change in the upcoming days since you have already stated that you even submitted the sitemap in bing webmaster tool.So lets wait and see.

Your website's position is No 1 in Google and you are still worried. It is interesting!

Anyway have you submitted your site in Bing webmaster tool. If not then submit it and check the stats if there is any error.

Cheers!

Barry

For ranking on Bing follow the bing webmaster guidelines and create an account and submit your site to bing webmaster.

you should first add your site in bing, check the webmaster and optimize your site according to the desired search engine guidelines and abstain from the things which they mentioned iin their rules and guidelines

Ranking first in google doesn't automatically mean you'll rank first in bing or any other search engine, each search engine requires it's own SEO work etc, but ofcourse you'd mainly want to concentrate on google whilst paying attention to bing/yahoo as well, making sure you register for a webmaster tools for both engines and make sure your site is optimized for both, remember they're both different.
