My website is a bit slow, and I appreciate that a shared server isn't as fast as a dedicated server. Also, I'm running on Wordpress, which is resource hungry...

 

Anyway, I did a quick check via http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-sites-on-web-server/ to see how many other sites I'm hosted with, and it turns out it's over 1000.

Is this good, or bad? Or industry average?

 

Also, some of the pages are indidcated as "explicit content", and yougetsignal says that this may affect my webpage ranging. Is this true?

(Actually, I checked some of the highlighted sites and only a fraction of them is actually adult content...)

1000 sounds a bit excessive IMO i use to host with one.com (and still do for a few domains) they have about 200-300 sites on each server when i just checked them on your tool.

 

Alot depends on the quality of the servers and the sites hosted on them.

I'm with TSOHost – which has had raving reviews pretty much everywhere.

Anyone else got an opinion on this?

 

Also: I've just done a performance test via http://www.webpagetest.org/ – using London as a location to access my website.

Looking at the test result graph, from what I understand: index.html in the domain root gets downloaded within 2700ms. DNS Lookup and Content download is a tiny fraction of that time – and over 90% of those 2700ms are "time to first byte".

 

As I said: Shared server / WordPress. OK, I understand... but: over 2 seconds of "waiting for first byte"????

Yes 1000 sites does sound a bit excessive. If all those were low traffic *static* sites then it may not be excessive, depending on lots of factors. However, as most sites these days run on some sort of content system and/or use databases etc then you only need 1 or 2 busy sites to hog the server resources and slow everything down.

 

As usual it pays to go with a better host that doesn't ovecrowd their servers.

Well – from all the reviews on the web, as well as recommendations (including from this forum here), TSOhost are a good host. I thought I had made an informed decision on that...

Their customer service, at least, is truly great.

Ts o are a great hosting company. They do sometimes suffer from slow times, but I understand they are in the process of building their own data center etc, so they are definitely on the up.

 

Do you do any form of website optimization?

1k off sites on a single server is what I'd expect on a free host solution, such as the one I have with .com. The server I'm on there has 1137 sites, but as this is a solution I only use to test ftp and php deployment etc I don't mind it being slow.

 

My paid solutions I use for my 3 businesses average 177 per server, and performance isn't bad. If I was using more resources for any of my sites though it may become an issue.

As far as I'm aware, TSOhost use load balancing web nodes with backend SAN (in simplest of terms) for their shared hosting, you may be able to see many user mount points but if correctly configured it is not a problem. Even without those technologies, there are other options such as CloudLinux and other reasons (many static sites, domain holding) why there can be a high site or account population on what looks to you like one server.

My dedicated server (that I run through a hosting company) reports 1000s of sites running off my server if I type in my domain.

Typing in the IP address of the server itself reveals the true result (around 20).
I would guess that the results you are seeing for your hosts, same as I was, are the result of load balancing and routing through some main switches.

The one thing that I found most interesting was how long it took for that page to load.

 

Oh and where will they be building their backup servers?
