Hello people of the internet

 

I have recently been accepted into an IT apprenticeship where they do Web development but also all the other stuff you can find on a Level 3 course. While you are being able to pick a Website development company as your work placement, which I've applied for and got a interview next Thursday.

 

But is it all worth it? Considering, I want to become a Freelance website developer?

 

I already have knowledge in HTML, CSS and some JavaScript.

 

Just wondering if you would recommend another route to go down?

Definitely yes! Working at an established company will hopefully teach you valuable business skills that will help if you go freelance, including things like dealing with customers, communication, time management, solving problems, working in a team and so on.

 

The more business skills you have the easier freelancing will be. Without those skills you can end up struggling...

This will indeed be worth your time. There's no better place to get experience than in the "real world" if you get what I mean. You get to learn how to deal with customers and such plus you will probably also get a lot of coding experience at the same time.

Looks like I'll stick at it for the next year and see where life takes me then.

Might as well stick to it, opportunities like this are far too precious to give up. Getting your foot in the door, especially with a credible company offering real career prospects, is paramount as you probably know. It might not seem worth it, be a little boring, asking you to suck eggs and whatnot, but it should pay off in the end... literally!

Hey, I am doing an apprenticeship similar to you. I've had the job to build an ecommerce site for a wholesaler and would like to eventually go freelance. Believe me sometimes you may feel the wage is bad and some may look down on you because of the job title but it will pay in the end, experience is so valuable especially when the economy is so bad and finding a job is very hard especially within the field you want to work. You also pick up how to work within a business too and how to deal with people's crap they give you! All the best and hope everything goes well for you mate

Pretty much what everyone has said above.

 

I started a 9 month internship over a year ago with a web design company, I've learned so much through it and have built up a lot more confidence in what I can take on - oh and I also got a job out of it

 

I still have a lot to learn and haven't done any proper freelance work yet, just sites for friends and family etc, but the internship really helped me, definately stick with yours it will help for sure!
