Hi everyone,

I have a requirement to do some social media stuff such as Facebook competition apps which would include data entry forms for different clients. Each client will want the ability to log in to the hosting and manage their own database. It wont be inappropriate to give a client root access and see the other databases for obvious reasons. I'm thinking of taking out a new hosting plan with a company as my current host (1and1) doesn't seem to offer this service.

So the plan is basically go buy a generic sounding domain where I can host all my Facebook work on and buy an SSL certificate so it meets Facebook's requirements then I will need to be able to create and manage multiple MySQL databases and give each client access to their own database either via their own control panel login or a link to log into the database directly with PhpMyAdmin. The main thing is that they don't see the other databases.

Can anyone recommend anything? I'm thinking somewhere in the region of a shared hosting plan so that sort of price range rather than full on dedicated or anything...

My personal suggestion would be to move away from 1and1 because they're an awful budget host and I, like many others, don't think you should use that kind of service for anything professional.

 

I would recommend EZPZ Hosting, because I've had a great experience with them. The coupon code in my signature will get you a discount, and their reseller plans are suitable if you are hosting many clients - you can create separate cPanel accounts to keep the databases separated, plus the reseller plans come with free SSL certificates which may be ideal for you.

 

Tsohost are very popular as well thanks to their reliability and support, though their reseller plans are a little more expensive. They have a custom control panel which is quite good, but I don't know if it allows you to create completely separated databases on shared accounts - you could shoot them an email and ask!

 

Have you also thought about exposing only the necessary data to the clients via a custom script?

Thanks for the info. I haven't personally had an issue with 1and1 but I am aware they don't have the best reputation.

 

I think EZPZ Hosting sounds pretty good for what my requirements are. Cpanel sounds like it will take care of what I need. By the sounds of it all hosting includes cPanel. I got in touch with them and they said I'd need a reseller account. Sounds like the cost is pretty reasonable so will check them out! Will use your signature...

I do not see how my link has any effect on the reputation of EZPZ Hosting - their reviews and respected support are their reputation, what have they done to upset you?

 

If I was the host myself then I wouldn't have to use a hit tracking link... incidentally a mistake that I grabbed that one; I have several bitly links I keep handy and when I tested it, it landed on the right page.. I'd never know that I'd been redirected twice.

 

So: nothing sneaky, I'm not the host, the company has not been put in a bad light, and because of you deciding to be grumpy instead of talking to me about it you went and accidentally posted the link again in your post.

As per the rules of this forum you can not advertise your own company etc etc... You can only do this in the classifieds section not in replying to peoples questions.

hostmedia and rallport, you both seem to be confused as to what an affiliate is. I wish I was a larger host like them, I've tried being a reseller of them and it turns out I should stick to programming.

 

jamesosix, judging by your sig link you're not as confused! The point is that I don't mean to use the affiliate link, I prefer to provide the promotional code because that logs my referral while also providing a benefit to the person I've given it to.

 

I recommended the two hosts that I've personally stuck with thanks to the fact they are both known for their service and support. I trust one of them so much that I'm comfortable referring people to them for a piddly commission, if I was trying to be a sneaky jerk I'd have referred you to one of those big hosts that offers unlimited everything for £2 and gives out a £40 commission for every sucker you lure in.

I'd certainly recommend some sort of reseller plan. Although I have a VPS with WebHostingBuzz and that offers similar functions to a reseller plan. Choose your host wisely though as many tend to offer different control panels. You really want cPanel/WHM. WHM will allow you to create the end user accounts.

If you're still looking for a solution, why not rent a reseller account? This way you can give all your clients their own cpanel log in, and if you create sites for others, you could earn a bit extra for including hosting too.
