May 16, 200818 yr Hi, i am in urgent need of help on my decision... I am starting up my freelance career after recently graduating from Uni, i have decided on a name that i really like for my portfolio site and have decided to try and use it as my company name that i will work under for many years to come! Here is the dilema... After searching who.is the only name available is currently a .org address, i don't mind a .org address, but when i checked out the .com address it was being held by a company who trades on domain names... They value the domain at $1,900! I managed to haggle it down to just $850, even for me this is expensive i am not earning a great deal even though i have currently got freelance work going on and am getting a payment in tommorow, but $850 is a lot for me! Should i stick with the .org or take the plunge and get the .com? I really need some sound advice from you vet's! Thanks, Marc. (P.S. I prefer not to say the actual domain name, but it is something along the lines of xxxxxdesign.com or .org in this case.)
May 16, 200818 yr Welcome to WDF! Personally, I would never pay that much for a domain name. The site creates the domain name, not the other way round. You can have the best domain name in the world but if you have a shoddy looking site at the end of it, who cares?! I would tell them to stick their $850 where the sun don't shine and go for the .org. They are clearly trying to take you for a ride as far as I'm concerned. If you're a start up business, spending this much money on a domain name seems a bit ott.
May 16, 200818 yr Welcome to WDF! If the name is really worth £850 to you then go ahead and buy it, though I think you'd be slightly mad for doing it! If your ideal name is gone then you'll have to find something else, try looking at a thesarus for some ideas on your chose words.
May 17, 200818 yr Buying a domain for money like that normally means that it has a bit of a following as you only buy domains for that sort of money if it is established in some way. Personally as you are starting out why not change the name. However if you are dead set on the name you could change design to designs, all you are doing is insinuating that you do more than one design If it is avalible you are only paying something like $10 instead of $800+ a much better investment for someone just starting out (and before anyone asks no there isn't a dizidesign.co.uk , I just decided that dizi designs sounds a lot better and more complete ).
May 17, 200818 yr I agree with the others that it's a huge price to pay for a start-up. You have no established brand or name recognition, so this is the one time you'll be able to be flexible with your identity. You'll need that $850 to get the rest of your business up and running.

In terms of what you remember, people only really forget large domain names. I don't think people will be put off by visiting your website because it is .org, it could be worse you might of only had the choice of some foreign domain which would mislead your potential customers.
October 7, 200817 yr I had the issue of owning a .co.uk, a .net and i just wanted the triple ... the .com. A yank already owned it and wanted $2000, so I told them to shove it ... they came back with $900 so I told them to shove it ... the domain lapsed and I bought it for peanuts on the open market. In short if you want it watch it and wait for a lapse. He who dares rodders and all that.
