Recently finished a site redesign for a local mobile beautician (my girlfriend), mainly as I've learned a lot more than I had when I made the original site. (This is actually the 5th redesign I've done!)

I think the layout is good and clean, I think it just needs a few tweaks. I'd consider just a few things to spice it up a little:

 

1. Maybe a small picture of your girlfriend on the main page. For small businesses, people like to see the person they'll be dealing with.

2. I'd re-consider the font. While the font looks good, I wonder if it's maybe a bit 'mechanical' for your girlfriends line of work.

3. Consider adding a small border radius on the contentAreaSideRight div just to make its appearance a little softer.

Change the body copy to a more legible font, drop it down from black to a dark grey (pet hate is pure black on white even in docs).

 

It has some padding issues mainly around your diving borders, give it room to breath, your header is thin in contract too.

 

Bottom three feature boxes are currently out of place, soften the edges with a milder grey or at least drop the line width inline with your borders. The bottoms are also cropped in Firefox.

 

No need for the bottom border above the footer.

 

Perhaps take the pixel texture from the header and introduce it in to the background to add detail, but do it very subtly.

Needs some imagery. Currently you're hit by a wall of text.

Change the font, currently it's not that readable, also drop it down from black to a dark grey as black on white causes ghosting.

 

Large amounts of padding need to be added, give the content some breathing space.

Yep and if you make it responsive to match her mobile status you may find all your Christmas's come at once.

My thoughts.

 

The pink is spot on. Decent texture at the top.

 

Don't publicise her mobile number. You can get business numbers that simply redirect to a mobile very cheap, and also they look more professional and save your girlfriends privacy. At the very least, have a separate business mobile.

 

As the others have pointed out, there's waaaay too much text. People don't want to visit to read a book, they want to visit to see who she is and what she does. Don't tell us what she does in the body of 600 words of blahblahblah - list it and show it.

 

This is why sliders can be great. You can show what she does visually, which is always more engaging than copy.

 

This site could do with a picture of her. If she is operating as an individual, it makes her much more "human" and approachable. A friendly face does wonders - especially when you consider she is going into people's homes, so it's very important people feel they can trust her.

 

Typography needs work. It's generally a good idea to have your header font different from your copy font, and your copy font should be something quite plain. It's too stylised and quite difficult to read. I would suggest you replace the copy font with Open Sans, which is a very attractive font without being over-styled and difficult to read. Essentially, it's one of the best Arial/Helvetica alternatives out there.

 

Also, there's black lines everywhere. I'd fine another way to distinguish the content. It just looks too harsh. I'd at least suggest toning them down to a more subtle grey.

Cheers for all the advice! I have changed the font, and also changed some of the harsh lines, I've added a very faint border on the left and right of both content boxes on the main and about page, still not sure about them though. Though it looks very bare without and guidlines, also added the gradient to the bottom of the main content area which I fear won't go down too well on here!

 

I'm fairly happy with the amout of text that is there on the main page, there's not a great deal and if someone wants to skip it the links at the bottom and content to the right are bold enough links / summaries. Also I've asked many a times about a picture, there's not much chance of it happening though!
