Dealing with lack of motivation

Featured Replies

First off, I have plenty of work coming soon, so it isn't like I am struggling to get work or anything like that.

My problem seems to be motivation!

The last few months I haven't been able to work at the pace I used to. I find myself getting distracted a lot easier and wasting time during the day. Now that wouldn't have normally been an issue as I would just make up the time in the evening, but even that seems to have died a death!!

With the two agencies I have giving me work (some of it I could only ever of dreamed about getting before) and my own clients coming in quite regularly , you would have thought that would be enough to give me a kick up the rear.

Anybody else ever felt like this? Find a cure?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love what I do, so it's not a case of I don't enjoy it, I just don't seem to be getting enough done and, to be honest, have gotten a bit lazy!

It's just that time of year when your ancient ancestors used to go out everyday hunting and menial 'brain' tasks were forgotten.

It's by no means a permanent thing and you'll be back to full power pretty soon.

It happens to me every year but vanishes again in September, it just means you'll have to try a little harder to work for the time being.

First off you should change your little description under your name to 'Currently accepting new clients tomorrow' ;)

or 'accepting new clients but don't expect any work done too soon' ;)

Every time I lose motivation I just re-do my portfolio or switch to something else.

Do you have any personal projects? I do my music site. When I've run out of steam with everything else, I give that some lovin, it makes me feel better and gives me a bit of a break from doing actual work as such whilst actually still learning and doing web design. Makes me feel refreshed going back to my actual job.

For example, a week or so ago I was lacking motivation so I turned to my music site and re-built the CSS to make it responsive. I learned more about CSS, had fun and when I was finished I felt I'd achieved something and was ready to go back to other work.

I don't really have time to rest, aside from my morning browse of a few forums (like now), I often work late in to the evenings and parts of my weekend - perhaps get more work to keep pushing you on?

Or, and I know it may sound obvious, perhaps give yourself stricter deadlines which force you to complete work and sit at your desk?

How much time do you take off a week and are you productive in your free time?

I certainly hope so Mike, lol! Must admit, today was quite productive, and it was a pay day, which always helps :)

Am actually starting to look at my portfolio anyway, a new direction, some new features etc.

I have a few personal projects I want to get off the ground, I just always feel guilty if I take time away from clients work. Maybe that's my problem!!

I think that is part of my problem, the majority of my clients have no real deadlines, with the exception of this new agency that like to spring things on me! The amount of work isn't an issue, I have plenty stacked up and it keeps coming in too. I do think that maybe that's where I lose focus; too much going on and not enough planning/time management.

To be honest, I am much like you. I start work Monday to Friday between 6.30am and 7.00am and work through till approximately 3.00pm where I take a step back, help with the kids etc. I will still take emails/calls if needed. I will then go back in to the office around 7pm and work till approx 11pm. Rinse and repeat. I am on at some point over the weekend, normally the evenings, but quite often I will also work a full day if the kids are not around.

So, I never really get much 'time off' per se, just when I sleep!!
