Is it necessary to use the "save for web and devices" function in photoshop when saving out photographed images for the web? I'm making a portfolio website and when I save out the photographs of my work using "save for web and devices" the colors appear dull. When I just save them out the regular way ("save as..."), the colors appear correct in my browser, and in some cases the file size is smaller than the ones that were saves out with "save for web and devices". Is this function meant to be used for saving out photographs for the web?

I use that option and it works just fine. Just be sure to select the highest resolution. I generally save all images for web and get great quality.

Save for web does exactly that/It's a export function aimed at use on the web and screens rather than print.

You'll need to play with the settings to get the desired quality vs size.

What format and/or compression options are you using when you save for web? What colour space are you using in Photoshop?

i dont use it, but only out of habbit. I think just generally saving as a png/jpg (depending on the type of image) are just fine.

"Save for the web and devices" will save the images at the best quality for the web. Just be sure to have a good quality setted.

It's still best to optimise your exports though.
