ipb vs vb

Featured Replies

Hi guys so I am currently using mybb but wanted to change to ipb until I read all the bad stuff about terrible seo and Google dropping many sites rankings after changing over so now I am wondering if I should go with vb as you guys run ipb I thought it would be good to ask your opinion.

Hope this is in the correct area.

Personally we used Vbulletin for one of our communities and we have had 1000's of spam within hours of going online. This was regardless to setting up spam prevention techniques, we are using IPB and have had no spam on the site. Only thing about IPB was when editing, it was a bit more difficult for your average user, so you would have to be a bit more advance.

Totally Agree, i find that i haven't had a single post, or sign-up from spam bots or spammers themselves, its been a very good move. Also agree on the Setup, it can be a little daunting with editing and getting it right, but once done, its a very clean and easy system, also with alot of there plugins become better everyday, its overall performance is rapidly increasing.

WDF runs on IPB and ranks fairly well, but I can't really comment about spam.

There is no spam. There is only zed.

(Slight misquote there, but I'm sure you get the idea)

I've worked on a number of IPB sites and al, have been fine SEO and Spam wise.

Forget vBuletin, absolutely horrendous piece of software.

QFTW

I think the SEO value of a forum has far more to do with the quality and regularity of the posts than the software you use. I use SMF for my forum, and since tightening up the registration process, I now get less than 1 spam post per month.

The forum ranks really well on search engines because it's a healthy, vibrant community.

I would choose your software because it fits your feature wish list, and because you find it easy to use.

I have 3 VB licenses and 1 IPB license with several addons including Nexus. Both are good board software. The one thing I hate about IPB is it doesn't have a large enough community or active support staff to get your problems solved in a prompt manner while VB has a huge community and large audience base that your problems are quickly solved by either the fans or support. Chances are solutions are already present on the web for you to find.

On the other hand, IPB's aesthetic efforts and the lesser market share may contribute to your site's attractiveness because it is less seen on the web. People may be more interested in a site / forum that has a uncommonly seen design / user experience.

We host an IPB 3 that gets ~500,000 visits a year (large car club) and they have zero spam.

So, pretty good then!

Hi I was around when Invision Board first started, they used to make iKonBoard but regarding your question I found vBulletin to be the best as a website designer/developer I often found the InvisionBoard team updating the templates meaning I had to recreate my premade themes which took me a long time to do so I gave up after a while. I haven't looked at either of them in detail for about 4yrs now but can still find my way around them very easy. I did used to get lots of Spam from my invisionboard though which was annoying, posts by spammers etc which often meant I had to up the security which often had a side affect of not many members posting but lots registering.

When I have a bit of time I will go back and have a look at them as thats how I started in web.

I normally go for VB but as above it's pretty spammy since it's the most popular of the paid forum scripts.

IPB is clean and simple to use, I like them a lot..

If I was you would probably go for IPB....
